Hi all,

I have an acer laptop 4 years old running xp. It has developed a hardware fault so that end of post I get 2 beeps and a message about a resource conflict.

Luckily I am told to press F1 to continue or F2 to enter bios. When I press F1 windows continues to load normally and then discovers new hardware the ethernet port which I try to install the drivers for.

Drivers fail to install no matter what I have tried to do, so I have disabled the ethernet port which stops windows xp from trying to install after each restart.

Returning the laptop to its factory condition makes no difference, it is definitely a hardware fault om the ethernet port in laptop which I can live with, wireless internet works fine

The annoying thing is the beeps at startup, can't see anything in a rather limited bios to disable the port, have tried to disable netowrk but no difference.

At least the laptop is working fine otherwise just the annoying beeps at startup and have to press F1 to load windows.

I know its definitely a hardware fault so would appreciate any ideas on how to fix it rather than having to get a new motherboard.

many thanks

martin

There might be a support forum for your brand of laptop but unless there's a bios setting to disable, there might not be a (cheap)good answer.

Well AMI BIOS is the only BIOS that has a 2 beep code. If it indeed is an AMI BIOS the beep code indicates that there is an issue with the first block of memory.

Without actually being able to see the BIOS screen(s) is is difficult to say. Most systems allow you to disable on board resources like Ethernet ports, sound cards, even the video... But the access will be vendor specific, and often even model specific. I wish I could give you a definitive answer but I can't. My best suggestion is to FULLY explore every BIOS screen and to concur with the earlier suggestion to check out some Acer support forums.

Thanks very much for all replies, I will try one of the acer forums and maybe even give a quick call to acer support.

I should have had it looked at last year when it was within the 3 year guarantee, but daughter was the main user and could live with the annoyance of the beep at startup.

Got her a new acer laptop so I have the old one. If it takes too much to fix will just live with it too, just a bit of annoyance at each startup.

thanks again

Martin,

It might be worth searching the internet and seeing if this behavior is a symptom of the CMOS battery and that it is starting to become flat.

Regards,
Noel

Try taking the first RAM bank out and replacing it with the second one. Periphery unit faults normally show up when windows loads, sounds more like power or memory problem. I've had similar problems, once it was a RAM bank, once the battery unit connections.

That's what I said above. The beep code supports this theory.

Hi again everybody,

Thanks very much for the further input on this. Once windows xp loads on laptop after I press F1 then the system runs fine.

If its a memory problem as Sinbad or Silverstones think it could well be, would running the Memtest application show up any errors on the memory block, without having to remove the memory from the laptop?

thanks very much again,

Martin

Martin,
I would also physically look at the ethernet port. There's a possibility that two of the conducting wires got crunched together somehow. That might also give you a fault indications, and it's easy to check.

Thanks Gary,
Do you mean to look within the port viewable from the outside of the laptop or screw off the bottom of laptop and look inside?

Thanks

Hi Martin,
Gary means to simply look into the port from the outside. There are 8 "wires" - actually Beryllium-Copper "springs" that are held under tension and which slip into the little notches in the RJ45 plug on the end of your patch lead when you plug it in. If some of these wires have been pushed out of position and are touching each other there is a possibility that the POST is detecting the fault.

BTW, while anything is possible, I'd be very surprised if you find a memopry fault based on the lack of report of strange things/unreliability once the machine is up and running.

Just checked the wires on the ethernet and they seem fine, will do a memtest on the memory and see what happens.

Probably will live with it then as its just a bit of an annoyance 2 beeps +having to press f1 at startup. Otherwise the computer runs fine in xp. I do have vista installed as well but its really slow.

I assume you checked Acer for a BIOS update? Sometimes that can fix the problem. You may consider re-installing the BIOS even if it is the same version. Also, check in the Device Manager properties for the actual device causing the conflict. Perhaps you can change a resource setting IRQ, etc there.

For what it's worth, I had a machine that gave me two beeps because of a defective hard drive.

In case your PC is an Acer 5*** Series laptop, perhaps this thread from another forum will shed some light on the problem.

http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread96933.html

I found it and other references by Googling "Acer laptop + 2 beeps and a message about a resource conflict".

Hope this is helpful.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
