Right click on Mixer track or actual track in Track View > Duplicate Track (with content). Uses next available empty track and places exact copy of content from source track.

There could be many reasons / uses for this. I am surprised it is not in place yet.

That is true. Same can be said about quite a few menus. I hope that following success of UI, PGM will start cleaning up BIAB with the same determination. Most people, with very (VERY!) few exceptions want clean & intuitive workflow. And obviously it's in PGM's best interest not to scare away newcomers.

However, "Duplicate track" feature is completely missing from the landscape. This was probably irrelevant when BIAB only had very limited number of legacy tracks, but not anymore.

Misha, should the Duplicate track feature 1) duplicate the RealTrack content EXACTLY? Or, 2) should it duplicate the chords (and all other track settings) but make sure it does NOT use identical sequence of RealTrack bits to create the track?

1) duplicate EVERYTHING would mean chords, bar settings, content, etc. EVERYTHING duplicated EXACTLY!

2) identical to #1 EXCEPT ensure that EVERY bar uses DIFFERENT RealTrack bits!

My vote would be for an option to duplicate a track either way!

#1 might be useful in some cases...for example if you are applying different fx to the duplicated track and panning the two tracks left and right but want them to play the same thing.

#2 might be useful when you are wanting two tracks of the same RealTrack but each playing slightly different RealTrack bits (BIAB claims to have the intelligence currently to avoid identical RealTrack bits on two tracks from playing at the same time but I find it to be wonky sometimes by playing identical bits simultaneously and messing up a panned effect)

And to follow up on my previous post, if this duplicate feature is designed to allow an EXACT copy, including RealTrack content, there would need to be a way to flag the new track so BIAB doesn't replace the RealTrack bits everywhere on the next generate using it's built-in "duplicate RT avoidance system"! Maybe in that scenario a duplicated track and it's source track would both be automatically frozen after the duplication?

John,
I didn't know about this:
"BIAB claims to have the intelligence currently to avoid identical RealTrack bits on two tracks from playing at the same time"
I am sure this can be amended and it should be. See below.

"EXCEPT ensure that EVERY bar uses DIFFERENT RealTrack bits"
Here is where things get interesting. Simple answer - bad idea. Hear me out. It will be a bit long.

Since incremental, almost instantaneous partial regeneration arrived, I stopped using initial generation of "what system offered" as final stem(s). Partial regen of individual tracks is a true muscle power of BIAB. It lets you effortlessly to massage the track at almost granular level, to make it fit the best possible way - that this particular track is capable of into your arrangement. If to put in a perspective, think of it as initial generation of a track - a log, and partially regenerated track - Pinocchio.

Likely, many if not most of BIAB folks are either not familiar with this (partial regen method) or tried it last a few years back when it was very clunky. Those who use it are aware that track becomes semi-frozen. Meaning you can still generate any part from any place of the track. However... and this is important as it relates to this thread's request. Just as with non frozen tracks, it is easy to lose a sweet section for good - if you regenerate on top of existing generation. Soo... the true Duplicate track(s) will allow to retain original, while experimenting with a duplicate. Easy way to audition A / B, make changes to any of two (three) tracks- compile.

Yes, I could have made a wish targeting a particular feature, but Duplicate track method is far more universal as it can appeal to a much broader group of people for very different reasons.
For example, FX you mentioned, backup (in the same project), especially useful working with MIDI and others.
And yes, even if some are not familiar they can A/B audition "whole" generation of a track as BIAB initially suggested.

In short, I believe a duplicated track should be identical to "source" track. Until you press "Play", so that users have an option of "freezing" it before it gets regenerated (Play or regenerate buttons) - if it follows what you said on claim of avoiding identical tracks. With my specific main case use, it will not matter, as target track will most likely be semi-frozen anyway.

Misha,
I see your point but I don't entirely agree. If I am working on a solo track with a prominent part then def work on it as you describe, carefully generating each section or even each bar to get what I want. On the other hand, if I am working on a bass track or drum track I rarely use partial regen on those tracks because what BIAB gives me is just fine (with the rare exception of a sour note or bad bar.) So, on a solo track I might want an exact duplicate copy but on a track I don't plan to do any handcrafting regens on I'd prefer the content be different.

However, as I have just written the above paragraph, I think I have decided I agree with you in all cases to just keep it simpler for PGM. If they do an EXACT duplicate of the content and I just press PLAY I will instantly get a different version of the duped track (assuming BIAB follows its rule about 2 tracks each using the same RealTrack.) And, if for some reason I wish to keep the duped EXACT copy I can just freeze it.

So YES, I agree. It must be an EXACT duplicate including content! Thanks for talking me down into simpler territory!

BTW, I like your log--->Pinocchio example! Most of my songs include several logs and only one Pinocchio!
