"The South Wind", (in Gaelic: "An Gaoth Andheas"), also known as "The Martinmass Wind", "The Southern Breeze", "The Southwind" or "The Wind From The South" is an Irish waltz or slow air in 3/4 time.
The tune is taken from a song titled "Oh Wind from the South" that was transcribed from the playing of a harper from County Clare in 1792. The lyrics were originally written in the 1700s, in Gaelic, by Donal "Meirgeach (Freckled)" MacConmara (1715–1810), who was homesick for his homeland in County Mayo, Ireland.
The tradition tells about a ghost ship bringing back to Ireland the souls of the Irish exiles, called Wild Geese, and mercenaries who had been killed in battle in foreign wars. As the vessel continued around southwest Cork it was driven up the west coast by a southern breeze and the ghosts of the expatriates could be heard intoning this tune, which was picked up by musicians on the coast of Clare who witnessed the event.
In my version I sing and play guitar and mandolins (Napolitan and Octave) as well virtual (Komplete Kontroll) Uillean Pipes and some wind effects. I produced this at my home with Band in a Box and Reaper.

Ah, an Irish waltz. My mom would've loved this one even more than I do, Arri. And I love it A LOT! You always amaze me how you find such a great band to accompany your own wonderful talents. Excellent mandolin.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Esa!
Well played and sung! I agree with Marty about your mandolin playing. I’m always appreciative of your research and giving us the history of the song - that is why your addition of the wind effect was very good. I thought the pipes outro was a good touch as well.

With this being 3/4 time, would it be fair to say that a higher proportion of traditional songs used that time signature compared to what is used today?

Well done and enjoyed listening.
Andrew

Hi Arri, a beautiful, yet melancholic song. But that's usually the case with Irish songs. That's why my wife and I love it so much.

In my old neighborhood, we had a Dutch amateur orchestra that only played songs by The Dubliners and The Pogues. And I was usually there, enjoying their music. Although, they couldn't do Shane MacGowan ;-)

But now I have to talk about the song you revived! The history of the song is very interesting. That ghost ship and all those lost souls singing, while the wind blows for everyone to hear. Typically Irish! And so beautiful, I think. And you did a great job on the mandolin and the vocals. Did you also sing the low voice in the song? It sounds like a man's voice. Tell me how you did that? First, a bottle of Jameson, Irish whiskey? No, I don't think you drink much!

There is one "but." You captured the importance of the wind well, but for me it was a bit too loud. I felt like there was something wrong with my headphones. In other words, the sound was a bit distracting. Maybe a different tone or volume?

But you did an excellent job here!

Hans

Hi, Arri.

Cool cover, I love the backstory.

I'm with Hans on the volume of the wind - it gets in front of the vocals and detracts from the song.... IMO. Feel free to disagree. smile

Everything else sounds great.

You've got a pretty impressive tremolo on the mandolin!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?
