I would say that the wish of "real instruments" playing MIDI notes is already mostly there in the later MIDI synths which use SAMPLING.

I think the aproach to Real Band and Real Instruments is to provide "phrasing" in a level that relies on musicianship combined with other technologies. I don't see where they are trying to come up with MIDI notes being sounded by real instruments.

What I feel, though, that may be the real future to instrument sound-producing (beyond sampling), would be instrument MODELING.

Good examples are Native Instruments B4 and Pianoteq's great piano modeling software.

The task of PG as such, though, is rather unique, and quite tough.

The technologies they deal would have more to do with artificial intelligence and "library approach" than with "sound making", till someone comes up with brute force ways, or combination.

Actually, though, "software" playing REAL INSTRUMENTS is one of the oldest technologies. We have had paper rolls playing REAL PIANOS way back since the 19th century.

So, bottom line is not about playing "real instruments" but of "GETTING RID-OF of real instruments" because of convenience and cost, would say.

But, who really knows what the future holds, if not a smile?
