I just turned 80 this year so, although I don't dwell on it, I'm aware that life doesn't go on forever, as I've lost many people .I really like this song, but it seems that some people don't ...........because it's sad. But then again, life isn't always a ten. I hope you like it.

ONE BY ONE

ONE BY ONE THEY'RE FALLING, THE PILLARS OF MY LIFE
LIKE ANCIENT RUINS THEY'RE GETTING OLD AND WORN
FRIENDS I'VE MET ALONG THE WAY, AND FOLKS WHO HELPED ME GROW
AND FAMILY THAT KEPT ME SAFE AND WARM

SOME ARE NOW A MEMORY THAT'S LOCKED INSIDE MY MIND
THEY LEFT THIS EARTH SO MANY YEARS AGO
AND OTHERS ARE LIKE OLD CARS, DRIVING THEIR LAST MILES
WONDERING HOW MUCH FURTHER THEY CAN GO

SO ONE BY ONE THEY'RE LEAVING ME, THE ONES WHO KNOW ME WELL
THE ONES WHO SHARED MY MEMORIES THROUGH THE YEARS
THE ONES WHO CAN REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN WE WERE YOUNG
THE ONES I'LL SURELY MISS WHEN THEY ARE GONE

SO I GUESS THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS, PEOPLE COME AND GO
IT'S A SAD TIME EVERY TIME THAT CURTAIN FALLS
BUT NOTHING LASTS FOREVER AND THAT'S HOW IT'S ALWAYS BEEN
ONE DAY HERE, NEXT DAY GONE........AND THAT'S ALL

Hi, Sol.

I'm not sure why people wouldn't like this - at some point, most people become aware of the reality of death and taxes.

In any event, I like it. It's a good write - meditative and thoughtful. The arrangement and vocals are good, too.

Nicely done! smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Sol
I don’t mind the touch of sadness in this one. It’s only natural to feel the loss (of friends, family and faculties), and thank goodness it happens gradually so that one has time to adjust. I remember a few years back when I began to lose flexibility in my fingers and decided I was going to use it as a reminder of all the good years my fingers gave me rather than the loss moving ahead - and I think that can be a good metaphor for relationships as well. I reflect on all the people I have known and now don’t see as time has moved on and no doubt I will meet new friends in the future. Relationships and community - most important.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful song and causing me to reflect on this important topic.
Enjoyed it!
Andrew

A song many here will relate to. I'll soon turn 75 and as far as I know there's no-one close from my teen years still around, then only one from my early 20s and 2 from my early 30s.. There's a lovely production on your song, which begs the question, what do you use for mastering? None of my music is mastered as I don't have any room left for extra programs, but I'm making a list of what others on the forum use.

Some favourite Waoist Adages:
#1: Play on the Way.
#13: Ask not for whom the flower blooms, it blooms for you.
#58: Bring consciousness to it.
#63: On the road to effortlessness, effort must be made.
#92: Be Love Now, the rest will come on its own.

Hi Sol,

There’s nothing wrong with singing about sadness. Like love and laughter it’s something we all have to experience. I think I’ve mentioned in other posts of mine that singing and songwriting for me is cathartic and helps me to get all my insights, frustrations and feelings out. No point bottling them up….but I do!

This is a great expressive song you’ve written and sung. I enjoyed it, kind regards.

Imagine how empty Happiness would be without a dose of Sadness. This is such a good write, Sol, and a fine production to present it. I like how the chorus seems to bring in a group from "the other side" to emphasis your intent. Man, that chorus is strong. Excellent song of the happiness so many friends have brought to your life stated through the sadness of your loss.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Sol,

Happy 80th birthday again!
I can tell you, I was about 8 years old, lying in bed, and had just learned something about life and death. Lying there, I realized that everyone older than me will die, until it's my turn. And I cried about that...
So, the lyrics are poignant, but it's also just how life goes.

But what a beautiful song, with a powerful voice. I really loved how you sang, but also how you composed the song and chose the right instruments to make it so beautiful and sad.
Great work!

Hans

Sol, after the year I just had losing a number of friends and finding out this morning that a close cousin just died I can really relate to this song. A great vocal and backing band. The mix was spot on.
loved it

I arrived early to a restaurant.
The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?"
I said no.
"Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

What's not to like about this song? Chorus is smooth and memorable. Band sounds good and fits your song well.
