Soundcloud: Revolution (2026 remix)
YouTube: Revolution (2023 mix)

For a good couple of months, I've had in mind to post some 'heavier' songs - in a rock sense. This one is a remix, with another I am aiming to post in a week or so's time which is new and grunge-like.

DEVELOPMENT
Written in 2007 and recorded originally in 2008, the song is a bit 'angsty' which is unusual for me (e.g. 'Your angles are stuffed and your ankles are bound'). I have sometimes wondered if I am harbouring some pent-up aggression? However, I choose to think I intended it as a positive message about choosing a more generous way of changing the world. The lyrics ask the listener “Are you really sure you know what you will be called to do if you ask for a revolution?”
The first recorded version was a mixture of midi, my own guitars and singing and was what we would probably class as synth rock. It used the WOODSTK1 style.
It was a few years later that I realised, after listening to a playlist of classic Aussie rock, that the first line of the song (but nothing more) was similar to the first line of a well-known song, so I did some melodic re-wiring.
In 2023, I wanted to modernise the recording, so I replaced it with the _HIGHWAY Highway Driving Country Rock style, upped the key by a tone to Bm and added new bass and guitar work. I stylised the rhythm guitars on the strum and chord voicing used by Keith Richards and also The Dandy Warhols on ‘Bohemian Like You’.
In the latest Soundcloud mix, all instruments are played or sung by me, with exception of the drums and three guitars in the bridge from BIAB. The bridge got an overhaul with piano and acoustic dumped and new guitars added and swapping a Daug for a C#m7 in the bridge (I’m mellowing in my later years).

Special comment: The new Drag’n’Drop feature in BIAB is very handy!

LYRICS
INTRO

VERSE 1
You say it’s time for a revolution
But you ain’t prepared to put in the work
We all need some restitution
But I say you gotta deserve it first

When love ain’t enough, it’s taking you down
Respond off the cuff, don’t give in your ground
Don’t act like you’re tough, lose your angry frown
Your angle is stuffed, and your ankles are bound

VERSE 2
You believe you’ve got persecution
But you wouldn’t know the meaning of hurt
Are you prepared for the retribution
When your hands ain’t been in the dirt?

CHORUS
When love ain’t enough, it’s taking you down
Respond off the cuff, don’t give in your ground
Don’t act like you’re tough, lose your angry frown
Your angle is stuffed, and your ankles are bound

BRIDGE
We all need a means to be free and forgiven
But I don’t understand the feelings by which you are driven

VERSE 3
You say it’s time for a revolution
But I say you gotta deserve it first

Nicely done, Andrew. Fantastic lead vocals, and I love those harmonies. That main riff has a great earwormy vibe. Clever and appealing bridge, too. Maybe it's the guitars, or the guitars with those vocals, but I can definitely hear a Stones-y feel that's easy to groove to. Super mix.

You've posted a lot of really accomplished work here previously, but this one has an extra level of satisfying polish to my ears.

A cracker of a song. Your were obviously "prepared to put in the work..." smile

Hi there Andrew,

Invoking the power of a Beatles song title I see, and maybe a cheeky little nod to it in the opening line? A catchy tune with a solid vocal from you, The vocal doesn’t sound triple tracked, to me sounds like a single track with reverb, good job getting that sounding just right. The BVs on the chorus are very subtle, it almost sounds like some one else. The change up in the bridge is great and provides a good variation to the song. Another good choice of real tracks, real drums and your guitars really work well together. I can make out a faint familiarity to The Dandy Warhols…. It just needed a “Woo-hoo”.

Another winner Andrew

Hi, Andrew.

This was originally a synth rock song? It definitely works in this "heavier" style.

Nice work all around! The "Stones" influence is strong, and works. smile

Thanks Ron. I think the octave harmonies were learned from Squeeze where Tilbrook would sing high and Difford would sing an octave lower - at least on some songs. Yes I feel the bridge is a great improvement on what I had previously. I picked up the Keith Richards strum when I learned how to play the riff for 'Brown Sugar' then realised that The Dandy Warhols had sequestered it for 'Bohemian Like You', so on this song I thought 'Why not?' I've always liked this (my) song, but never sure if that was just because it was mine.
Thanks for listening and your generous comments!

Bob - if only I could write more like this! It is a good blend of pop rock with some edge (as you say), but I guess all of us would like to know the trick to consistent successful songwriting. As I wrote elsewhere, it feels like catching clouds. Thanks for listening!

Not deliberately Beatles 'Revolution' although I've been immersed in their soup my whole life, as you know. (PS thank you all those years back for playing your brother's White Album and running off a cassette copy - it changed my musical path.) In fact, I'll PM you with the song that I was channelling subconsciously for the first line of the verse which I had to 'rewire'. Regarding the vocals, I am increasingly winding back on the 2nd and 3rd main vocal tracks to build up confidence in singing and mixing. I mentioned in my notes that both are 12db below the true main and probably don't need to be there. Yes, I am really happy how my simplistic lead guitar in the bridge worked out. Thanks for listening (again)!

Far from it, but I am learning and I think my current mixes are better than when I joined the forum. Isn't it normally 10,000 hours to make an expert, but I'm only 860 posts!

Thanks David. Well, synth rock is probably not entirely accurate, but it had a synth bass and some 'synthy' keys, plus earlier versions of my guitar riffs. For a moment there, I thought you were going to pull an 'Obi-wan Kenobi' comment and say "The Stones is strong in this one". I've never been much of a Stones fan - much preferring their northern competition. I know you didn't ask, but I also prefer Blur over Oasis, since I am referring to Britrock competition.
Thanks for listening!

Hello Andrew,

Nice, relaxed song. It has a bit of an '80s vibe. The lyrics do evoke a different feeling than the song's atmosphere. Funny!
The guitar playing underlines that relaxed feeling perfectly!
And your vocals (and the BG vocals) also fit very well.
And these lines in your lyrics I like very much: "You say it’s time for a revolution, But I say you gotta deserve it first"

Have a nice day,
Hans

Andrew,

This Is Cool!
I like everything about it - the write, the vocals and BGVs, the playing, the production.
(I listened to both)
A super catchy chorus.
I hear the "Stones thing", but to my ear it is very early-Neil-Young-y (a very cool thing).

Andrew, talk about an evolution! Revolution went through many phases didn't it!
Super vocal and lyrics.
Super groove and backing tracks.
This is an excellent song.

Thanks Dave! I would prefer to play more of my own content, but also recognise this is a Showcase of BIAB, so I make sure there is some BIAB content, and because I use BIAB a lot in the development of a song idea, I like to leave enough in there that illustrates this.

Thanks Hans! Regarding the music and lyrics having different intent, I had never thought of that. It makes me wonder what the song would be like if it had a different, more positive lyric? Hmmm. You've got me thinking ... but not enough to go through the effort. :grin

Thanks Mario - I can safely say I won't be touching this song for a long time, so in that sense, the song was only fit enough to survive this long!

Thank you to all for your wonderful comments and for listening!

Cool catchy tune with a great hook, pretty good vocals, and overall a pleasure to listen to.
Personally, I would make it 5 BPM or so faster to give it a little more momentum, but the laid back atmosphere it has now is also good, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Really liked the attitude in this, and the chorus was strong. Well done on all levels, Andrew, this song has some gravitas that drew me to it and stayed with me.

Thanks B.D.! I don't know why I didn't think about the BPM increase when remixing - but I can see and hear why you would say it. Hmmm. I promised myself not to do version 4...

Thanks Scott! I like writing really melodic songs underpinned by a good chord progression, and I think this one fits that bill. I think I'm gradually getting better at mixing. I have my starting template in my DAW set up now, then modify to suit each song - and trying not to be formulaic about it. Thanks for listening and commenting!

I'm glad you like it Rob! I've been pleased to hear members' reactions to it, and what stood out to each. One should never choose favourites from amongst one's children, but I am pleased with it.

Ha ha! Thanks Scott! Knowing people's mixed reactions to Revolution #9 - I quite like it myself, actually - the world's not yet ready for #10, so I'm happy for mine to be amongst good company in the pile.

Firstly, the excellence of the mix was immediately apparent.
Every track has its place and the subtle dynamics work well with the open feel.
Heck, it’s apparent just from looking at the SC waveform.
FWIW this is the mix style that we always like.

Excellent group of BiaB session guys.
Seven BiaB tracks exceeds our mix pay grade

Add to the above your nice instrumental and vocal performances.
It was interesting to read about your vocal arrangement.
Seems like that would take the patience of Job smile

Well done,

J&B

Andrew,

This sounds like a lost Stones track that was meant to be a radio hit back in their early 80's resurgent period! Love the Keith Richards type rhythm guitar stuff going on, it really makes the song as well as the
memorable melody flowing through!
It's a really great sounding track that is worthy of many listens!
Thanks, TB

Hey, Andrew! I really like the unexpected haunting chord changes in your catchy melody. It has the choppy clean feel of the Rolling Stones hits. It's really appealing. Very well done! John

We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
