Considering improvements and reducing potential frustration for users, could this become an automated process when these conditions occur?
That would scare me a bit, and it would have to pause to allow you to save your existing settings (unless it automated that, too). How about a compromise: add a menu option to do this 'complete' reset, within Preferences, Return to Factory Settings? Have that option remove all the files that need to be handled to accomplish a 'complete' reset. Then add a prompt in a yellow message box that strongly suggests taking the action, when warranted. Something like that would still give us control and avoid the instructions that are sometimes given that require users to navigate and delete files.

I went for many years never having to do Return to Factory Settings. Then certain years, I had to do it frequently. I suppose that's OK, and even I as a programmer appreciate having a menu option to do that. But I have to wonder when someone asks in the forum about a problem and the answer is that they have to find then delete files. That could seem unnecessarily hazardous to many users, I think.
