Christiane (Chris) Spruit and I have been writing songs together for more than 10 years now, and we have done more than 100 original songs. Typically I provide the music and Chris writes the lyrics and does the vocals. We have started to remix/master some of our old songs with the aim of releasing a "Best Of" CD at some point, and this is the first. We originally released this in 2018.

From Chris: The song about a private dancer in a bar. The dogs are the pimps, and the cats are the johns on the hunt for love....

The Band:

RealDrums in Song: Rumba^1-a:Sidestick, HiHat , b:Sidestick, Ride
RealTracks in song: 1417:Bass, Electric, RootsRock Ev 100
RealTracks in song: 2905:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BrightBluesyPopColin Ev 100
MIDI SuperTracks in song: 3004:Piano, ElectricVintage, Rhythm BluesyPopMike Ev 100

Mixed in Reaper with plugins from Waves and iZotope, mastered with Ozone12

In the still of the night, 2018 Christiane Spruit

V1) when the night shines silver
and the dark takes the sky
when the band begins to gather
in the smoke and the light

Come on and dance with me
in the still of the night

V2) while the dogs are sleeping
one eye open wide
in the heat and in the gleaming
lonely cats come alive

Come on and dance with me
in the gleam of the light

Bridge:

they will come
and they will go
some will say I love you
I'd love a gin, a drink on ice
but baby we both know

Solo

V3) we walk the street of money
he's been talking for a while
little children and the struggle
hush now baby, we'll survive

Outro vamp: Come on, hush now, survive

Thanks to those that listen and comment.

Dave & Chris,

I remember this song well. I also remember saying I especially love the overall slinky feel. A touch of blues, some great Albert-style guitar lines, and an almost Sade feel in the way that Chris delivers this song.

The remix / master on this one is absolutely great! Loved it!

Dave & Chris, I don't recall the initial post but this remake of it sounds fantastic.
Outstanding backing band
Great vocal and guitar leads - no surprise here
Super mix
Loved it

I really like the style chosen. The singing is excellent, and the counterpoint guitars are superb.

Hi Dave and Chris!
Three good things I like about this song … Chris’s vocals weaving with Dave’s licks, and great style choice - the latter reminding me of the vibe on Smash Mouth’s Astro Lounge album. This mix sounds great as well - I think that makes it four!
Enjoyed listening.

I'll definitely buy one of your CDs, if only to hear Chris sing (sorry Dave and Marty. You now I love you guys too smile ).
I've never heard the original, but your remix/master sounds pretty good.
Really good and tasteful guitar playing, perfectly interwoven with the vocals.
Is this called Rumba-Blues?
Anyway, I really enjoyed my listen.

Hi Dave,

This is fantastic! You and Chris are one of the strongest songwriting powerhouses on the forum. Love this new mix. I did a search of the forum and I found that in 2018, I wrote the below comment.

I love the rhumba (and Latin dance styles in general). Incorporating it with blues/jazz and getting that crossover between the two styles makes for a really, really fine listen. As J&B have said, you've reached the stratosphere with this work. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You and Chris have become a songwriting force extraordinaire!

All the best,
Noel

I stand by every word I wrote smile Moreover, this song has clearly stood the test of time. I wish you good fortune with your 'Best of' album!

Really great song Dave & Chris,

Sultry and moody as a sultry, moody thing. And the girls in the video are too distracting, lost my focus on several occasions....or perhaps that was your intention!!

But a great song for all the right reasons. Kind regards.

I started here in April 2019, so this is new to me. BA has been working at a very high level for quite some time, so a best of seems a natural to me. How do you choose? That's gonna me a tough job. I liked this tune very much, I like that it was subtle regarding the subject matter. Playing excellent as always. Vocals were superb. Ten years, that's quite a legacy. Congratulations!

Slithery and cool. Ya'll CRUSHED this. Top shelf vocals and guitar work. Crisp, laid back backing band--love that BiaB bass. Super song performed superlatively. Fantastic work, Dave and Chris!

Thanks, Bob! Not too many of us still around from back then, I looked at my original post and most of the comments were from people who are no longer here, kinda sad actually.

Love that sidestick beat. You two are by far my favorite band (well, tied with Janice, Bud & Peter). This song has such a contagious feel. It controls my body. Of course, your guitar work is brilliant --heck the whole song is brilliant. And Chris is an outstanding collaborator --and boy she can sing. Love everything you do, you two.

Enjoy whatever happens!

This particular song was from our second CD, Blue Line, which we released in 2019. We did four CD's before deciding to concentrate on singles, and now we mostly concentrate on YouTube 'cause that's where we have the most success. They are all still available of Spotify, iTunes, etc.

Yes! Rumba Blues, you have a good ear. Basically Blues over a Rhumba groove.

Dave, you have done a masterful job with this arrangement! It definitely has a Santana vibe which is always a good thing! Your guitar fills and lead parts are as always, top shelf! I'm assuming you are using a Strat here and it sounds wonderful! Chris has such a beautiful voice that is the very definition of pro!!
Enjoyed it!
Take care, TB

As I wrote on YT, "VERY smooth throughout. Not what I expected! Excellent song". You and Chris make a a really great partnership.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
