Without A Word Of A Lie (Soundcloud)

Without A Word Of A Lie (Youtube)

This song will be a bit of deja-vu for Mr Dee, as it was written in January 2024 prior to me using BIAB. I thought it was such a reasonable song that it merited an update and enhancement that BIAB gives. So essentially i've swapped out the original drum pattern, my basic bass playing and acoustic rhythm, and used BIAB drum, bass and electric rhythm guitars to fill out the sound. I was working on this prior to Sol releasing his recently song "Your A Baby and Wonderful", which I really enjoyed. I mentioned in my comments to Sol that babies are pure and unspoilt until society starts to shape them. Well, this song sort of goes down that path on how we all get swept up in life's course and things shape us...in this song how the negative things have shaped us. Enough psychoanalysis!!!

So the video was shot in 2024, you see me playing bass and rhythm to my original track, but as that's been swapped out of the audio you'll notice it's not in sync. The original is on my Youtube channel should you want to see it.

WITHOUT A WORD OF A LIE

Do you remember the lies we’re strung when we were young?
Mind games played by loved ones, still haunt you.
Serve to beguile us, misdirect us and dumbfound us.
Without a word of a lie, we were so naive.

Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.
Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.

Do you still wear the scars from the lies of yesteryears?
Innocence came at the expense of humility.
All said in jest I’m sure, still we stay repressed,
Without a word of a lie, per chance to scream.

Give it some time, the seed of a lie will grow.
Self confidence so fragile and breaking.
Give it some time, the fruit of a lie will show.
Innocence is never lost, it’s taken.

Can you sense the betrayal that held you back?
Does it still threaten you today?
You know you’re still hurting, don’t say it ain’t so.
Without a word of a lie, needed love to dream.

Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.
Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.

Give it some time, the seed of a lie will grow.
Casual lying is the game you play.
Give it some time, the fruit of a lie will show.
That’s how you get your rush, acting that way.

Give it some time, the seed of a lie will grow.
Self confidence so fragile and breaking.
Give it some time, the fruit of a lie will show.
Innocence is never lost, it’s taken.

Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.
Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.
Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.
Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie.

Hi K-Dub!
Wow! That 2 years went quick! This song has gotten a good upgrade - you’ve kept all your good elements and added some BIAB tracks. The change has accentuated your vocals and your acoustic. Dare I say more successful than a Windows 11 upgrade? I still love that low vocal you did.

We should give some of these songs a run when we get together soon with our co-conspirator.

It sounds like you’re having fun auditioning all those additional styles you have access to!

Well done!

Thank you Andrew,

Yes, I was quite pleasantly pleased with the end result. It took me a while to choose the style as I was trying to find a style based on a popular song. I racked my brain for ages wondering what is this song like, and couldn’t really come up with anything. So yes, I kept the best bits, my bass had to go.i nearly stacked two drum tracks, the original and real drum, but they overwhelmed each other. Added reverb to most tracks, pushed guitars hard L&R, vocals centre and Bob’s yer Auntie! It’s been hard trying to do any recording or even cuddling a guitar in this hot weather, so even though I’ve redone this song, I haven’t done a lot of brainstorming for new material.

By all means we can give it a go next get together, it’s been a while but not long now.

Cheers Andrew

Lee, super job retooling this one with BiaB. Love the "Without a word of a lie" lines sung in the lower register. A very cool and original sound. Nice vocals overall, too. Especially like it when the harmony comes in high with the "time" line. The band really crackles as well.

A really well-crafted tune you have here!

Good song, I liked the low-voiced chorus, very catchy. A few prosody issues but the topic is bound to cause that. Nice job, overall!

Thank you Mario

The subject matter is quite intense and I think the metre of the song reflects that well. The style upgrade from BIAB added extra umph to the original production, with two electric guitars driving it along just below the overall level. Additional reverb to the vocal has also smoothed that as well.

Glad you enjoyed it, kind regards Mario.

Thank you Ron,

Yes, it was certainly worth spending time getting this redone and giving it a bit more grunt. The vocal does have a few levels to it, from the lows of the chant to the high in “time” and that does serve to give the listener some break on an otherwise average vocal.

Thank you for your review and listening, much appreciated. Kind regards.

Thank you Rob,

The low register does give it a menacing undertone, which is what I was trying to convey. The subject matter is a dark one, just how much unnecessary baggage we’ve all had put on us at a young age. Hopefully my next number will be a bit lighter.

Thank you for your review and listening. Kind regards.

Thank you Bob,

It was a good song to do some BIAB improvements to, and it gave me a valuable opportunity to explore and reinforce my usage of BIAB. Im not sure that the PUSHY style was exactly what I wanted, but it provided the drive and intensity that the song merited.

Thank you for listening, kind regards. Lee

Good song KW, I like the lyrics and I like your vocal too. Especially like the way you do the "Without a word of a lie, without a word of a lie." bit, very effective.

I watched the video, nice to see you in action on the acoustic also.

Excellent!

It's a cool sounding song with a catchy chorus!
I've obviously never heard the original but this one is worthy of the attention you gave it!
Your music gives Grateful Dead vibes when I hear it and it sounds great!

Thanks, TB

Your song brings back nice memories of The Kinks of UK - specially Ray Davies singing.

Thank you Blue,

Yes, the low register vocal became a chant with a sense of foreboding and adds to the weight and depth of the song. I must do a few more action recordings, a very kind friend gave me the guitar clip on to do it. Although I use the word “action” in its broadest possible sense.

Thank you for your kind comments and listen. I appreciate your feedback.

Kind regards

Hi there Torrey

Grateful Dead, Greatful Dead, I must check them out! Not sure if it was yourself who mentioned them before, but they have come up. I MUST check them out, I’ve got the recall of a guppy! I’ve heard the name but I’m not aware of their material.

Thank you for the kind review and listen, I appreciate the feedback.

Kind regards

Hi, Lee.

The new version is catchy and bops happily along. A bit at odds with the lyrics, but that's the nature of pop, isn't it?

I like it! smile

Thank you Brno,

Ray Davies is an understated legend really. So many great unique songs with a diversity that matched Lennon/McCartney.

I’m glad it brought those happy memories back to you. Thank you for listening and commenting, kind regards.

Hi there David,

Yeah, upon redoing the song with BIAB, I didn’t look to alter the lyrics or re-record the vocals, so that’s an aspect I could have checked out. But to be quite honest, I had noticed it until it was pointed out. As you say Pop is littered with songs that lyrics don’t always fit the metre of the song….thats a badge at this stage I’m happy to wear, I think I’m in famous company with that!

I appreciate your kind review and feedback David. Kind regards.

Hey, KW. I really like the Steve Miller type of vocal and reverb you've put into it and the funky bouncy beat! I know what you mean about the psychological analysis...I have a song called "We Didn't Have Time Enough" that a butterflies and unicorns New Ager with an autoharp put right on her therapist's couch. It was the wackiest review for a song I ever read! But back to "Without a Word of a Lie"...it's a heck of a good romp the way the song bounces along and the philosophy is easy to follow...one of those songs that puts life together after a setback, and a very good one at that.
Best to you, John

Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
