Hi All,

Here’s something called Shepherds Of The Bowery.

We also included a Music Visualizer.

White Zombie rattling bones from the edge of night
Patti Smith praying sideways hanging on the mic
Every chord was a dare every night was a year
Making poetry bleed falling out of your ears

So thank you broken saints and midnight kids
For the noise and the nerve and the hunger we hid
Raise a dirty glass to the stage and the crown
The Shepherds of the Bowery where lost things get found

Hilly Kristal behind the bar counting sins and change
Every band had a number every night was strange
Ramones like a subway train straight through your chest
Blondie flashing silver in a thrift store dress

So thank you broken saints and midnight kids
For the noise and the nerve and the hunger we hid
Raise a dirty glass to the stage and the crown
The Shepherds of the Bowery where lost things get found

The All Night Newsboys sticking like candy and glue
Joan Jett cutting hearts clean in black leather boots
Talking Heads making art out of panic and sweat
The Shirts got tight with the things we forget

So thank you broken saints and midnight kids
For the noise and the nerve and the hunger we hid
Raise a dirty glass to the stage and the crown
The Shepherds of the Bowery where lost things get found

They said it was over
They said it was done
But cities don’t lie
They just change who they let in

Bob and Joliz, beautiful, hymn-like homage to the time it felt like the world was tilting on its axis, and in hindsight, it was. Super vocals by both of you. Especially like the arrangement of those BGVs floating over the opening--a great scene setter. Wonderful, relatable imagery throughout. (I only had to Google The Shirts) From the credits I'm guessing the lead guitar fills were the BiaB soloist, and they sound right in place. The band, arrangement and mix are perfectly supportive as well. Super sounds for a super song.

Very interesting lyric again, Robert.
I always get drawn into them, trying to work out what each line means.
Nice backing vocals too.
Carry on.

Hi Bob.

I had to do a little bit of homework to understand these lyrics as fully as I possibly could smile Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing that given you are from around the New York region (if I recall correctly), "The Bowery" is the location below that Google found for me.

https://ainsliebowery.com/bowery-nyc-history-fun-facts-and-insights/

I've never before heard of it. After reading about it, though, The lyrics made a lot of sense.

Quote
By the 19th century, The Bowery had become a hub of entertainment and nightlife, home to theaters, vaudeville houses, and beer gardens. It was a place where immigrants, artists, and workers came together, drawn by the promise of amusement and the pulse of city life.

One interesting thing that I learnt is that The Bowery is where tap dancing began! That really amazed me. Just a couple of months ago I was watching some Fred Astaire clips and I was wondering about the origins of tap dancing. It was only a passing thought, though, and I didn't remember it long enough to do a 'net search. Quite honestly, I could never have anticipated that it would be through one of your songs that my curiosity would be answered.
😄

Now back to your song...

I thoroughly enjoyed it. You and Joliz have reached the stratosphere with this really fine creation. It is excellence on vitamin tablets! I thoroughly enjoyed where you took both took me. Honestly, Joliz's and your voices work so amazingly well together.

A super presentation that captures the nostalgia of the past very, very well.

Hi Bob (and Joliz)
Only having been to NYC once and like Noel, not knowing about The Bowery, I had to look it up. I am assuming the artists and bands you listed must have played at The Bowery (or Bowery district?) on a regular or semi-regular basis? Here's you giving me a geography lesson again!
I loved Joliz' vocal hovering over your verses. The style and tone of her vocal reminded me of something - not in the sense of the same melody, but in the same style. And then I remembered - the same BV style is used in a song by Michael Kiwanuka called 'Cold little heart'. I don't want this to distract from your wonderful song.

'... where lost things get found' - I reckon I've been in one of these situations where the circumstances and my reaction to it feels like everything complex now makes sense - like in that moment, Saturn is in conjunction with Jupiter.

A wonderful song - well done.

Nothin' better than another from Bob Dean, The Song-Writing Machine (as Mr. Snyder would say), and what a treat adding Joliz to present it. Oh yeah, having a video with scenes from where you sing about really elevates another sense to enjoy what you two make. Cool alright, and I still like the scenes you evoke in my mind. Thanks, you two.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Ron,

Thanks so much for the great review. It means a lot to us.

Yes, that lead soloist track is excellent. My parts are providing some light acoustic & electric rhythm background in this one.

I don't know why you're not famous, Bob, you certainly deserve to be. Great poetry, loved it. I just got quboz and I've been listening to Patti Smith and Bob Dylan in hi-res, it's glorious. Great work!

I've listened to this on YouTube and I was certain I'd left a comment, but there's none now. So I'll say this is great NY rock poetry! Joliz' backing and harmony vocals are perfect for it.

What a tribute to the gritty days of the Bowery!

This below as well as the entire chorus are great:
“Every chord was a dare every night was a year
Making poetry bleed falling out of your ears”

You never fail to take us on a magic trip.
Joliz and you have a truly special sound.

The BiaB guys and your guitars sound great.
Per always this is a top bar mix.

Your song also has us reflecting on our local music spots
And our memories from many years back.

The vid offered just the right amount of support to the narrative.

Enjoyed this!

Hi Bob and Joliz,

In a way, I regret not knowing that place in New York.
The last time I was there, I was 13. I bet it existed back then, but they probably wouldn't have let me in.

But your song, like most of your songs, is so evocative that you feel like you're there too.
It's a sweet song, with Joliz playing so well in the background!

I really enjoyed it!
