Spot on the Wall

A quirky song about figuring things out. A spot on the wall. A relationship. A life. Took me two months to warm up to my brother's lyrics but I like them a lot by now. The notion of running hard, but not necessarily in the right direction, is so...me.

Every instrument you hear is from the 2026 RealStyle _DESCEND.STY. The pair of modern fingerstyle guitars sound great split like this. The first part of the song features the pair. The bridge features the rhythm guitar. The rest has all three guitars at the same time. Panning listed below.

The 4820 guitar produced harsh artifacts that Melodyne could not isolate, so the BiaB stem took maybe 30 partial regenerations to MOSTLY clean that up. I'll send the support folks at PGMusic a report with a frozen track.

Struggled with the bridge. I like it enough now, but it might have just beaten me down. So if you have thoughts on whether this works or not, I'd be interested.

THANK YOU in advance for any listens and comments.

A Spot on the Wall

There’s a spot on the wall
It catches my eye
I don’t know what it is
And I don’t know why
Could it be a spider?
A fly from outside?
A lone spot on the wall
With no place to hide

I’m running on my treadmill
Like I’m running a big race
I could be running to you in Dallas
But I just keep running in place
And the walls are like my skyline
And the fan is like my breeze
I’m struggling toward the finish line
Until you come back to me

There’s a spot on the wall
It don’t even move
Like art nouveau painting
In the French Louvre
Like a black hole in space
A hole in the wall
Maybe an eye floater
Too big or too small

I’m running on my treadmill
Like I’m running a big race
I could be running to you in Dallas
But I just keep running in place
And the walls are like my skyline
And the fan is like my breeze
I’m struggling toward the finish line
Until you come back to me

I think I’m getting shin splints
With all the suspense
My environment’s getting too artificial
But my exercise is so beneficial
With an initial case of the cramps
Running under the lamps

There’s a spot on the wall
It catches my eye
I don’t know what it is
And I don’t know why

I’m running on my treadmill
Like I’m running a big race
I could be running to you in Dallas
But I just keep running in place
And the walls are like my skyline
And the fan is like my breeze
I’m struggling toward the finish line
Until you come back to me

Ron,

Love these lyrics and the melody is superb. Absolutely GREAT vocal. I love your delivery and tone.

The arrangement is perfect - wistful and steady. Just what this song needs and nothing else. And a wonderful mix.

I'm on my second listen. I know I say this a lot about your songs, but this is my new favorite from you. smile

Outstanding!

Nice catchy flow to this tune Ron, enjoyed it. Not sure you even need the bridge, maybe just some rhythmic/instrumental break to build tension before going back into the heart of the tune. Having said that, it was neat to hear the phrase "shin splints" in a song. That's a first for me.

Ron,

This is really terrific listening. I love the instruments, the arrangement and the production. And your singing is outstanding. I have to compliment your brother, too. He's really pulled out all the stops with these lyrics. I love the idea of using a treadmill, running in place, and being focused on a spot on the wall while waiting to be reunited with someone special. This is a very clever scenario and your brother has been very inventive and creative with developing it.

This song is highly impressive on so many levels.

Somewhat enigmatic lyrics, but the lines "I could be running to you in Dallas" and "until you come back to me" give it some much appreciated grounding. As always, your vocals are very, very good, and your production is perfection. If you want a problematic bridge (I'm sure you don't), give "Body and Soul" a try. I really didn't know what I was doing with that. I just have to say again how good your songs sound on my new gear! A real pleasure to just kick back and enjoy. Great work!

A really good one Ron!
Love your choice of style - particularly the acoustic picking pattern. I thought the bridge was a good fit and it would be a less song without it - not the highlight but very appropriate.
Your vocals were fantastic - there were a couple of lower notes you sang that had a wonderful quality to them, and those BVs in parts sounded like those in 'Only living boy in New York' - took me back to 1979 when I first owned that album.
Going back for a third helping!

Yep. Watching that spot for movement...

What a wonderful song, R.W. and DC. Excellent lyrics and sung so well. I like the percussion, too; it adds the right ingredient. Yeah, I like the bridge; it's like another version of the song. Great pro production too.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi, DC.
Yes, it's strange the things you notice when you're in a certain mood.
Lyrics are well written, imaginative.
The melody is soft and well suited to the lyric. The mix is good.
I like it.
What more can I say?

I LOVE the lyrics.
You're a lucky guy to have such a cool lyrics writer on your side.
I also LOVE your sparse arrangement, which leaves plenty of room for the vocals, which you fill perfectly.
Just right up my alley.
The icing is your singing, really well sung with wonderful harmonies.
And despite your doubts, the bridge works very well, so stop complaining!

You certainly have a good way with lyrics Ron.

Who’d thought you could make a connection between nouveau painting and eye floaters! A beautifully subtle song style Ron. Your vocal delivery is always spot on. Really enjoyed it, kind regards.

Hey, Ron. I'm really impressed with your melody, story line, and finesse with your guitar. Your vocals are unique and personable which is a great plus for the folk style that you have. Few actually have that combination which makes you stand out. Your bouncy melody and quirky lyrics make for a song I would listen to over and again...certainly an excellent album cut.

Unusual, but cool lyrics! Band sounds great, really like the percussion, nice arrangement too. Love your vocal! A little more reverb than you normally use I think? Sounds great whatever you are doing.

Nice one, Ron, enjoyed!

Thank you, Mario. Yes, funny indeed. The song wouldn't come for me until it did all at once. Then it seemed SO obvious...

It would appear that Sound cloud just went down.
Got a page that says this:

Something doesn’t sound right.

A report has been sent to our tech team,
and they’re looking into the problem.
Please check back in a bit.

So I'll be back later....

Getting it on Mario's post, too (which I listened to earlier...)

update - I went to the SC home page and entered "ron davis 'spot on the wall'"
It took me to your "recent" list. I could see the track.
I clicked on the song name (to go to the page) and got the "Something wrong" thing.
I could play the track from the "recent list".
