This is a remake of a song we did back in 2016. The song was entirely composed by Chris, she sent me a track with her piano and vocal, and I built a backing track with BIAB and added some guitar parts.
For this version Chris redid her vocal, I replaced the BIAB drums, and Marty replaced the BIAB bass.
Turns out we had never done a video for it, so the video is new.

The Band:

1831:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm PopModernGrooveBrightA-B Ev16 075
1828:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm PopModernGroove Ev16 075
Chillout\Chillout - dimensions_145_percussion_a_minor ev16.wav

Bass: Marty Straub from BabuMusic (original had 1827:Bass, Electric, PopModernGrooveA-B Ev16 075)
Drums: EZDrummer3 (original used PopModernGrooveSync16^5-a:Snare on 4, HiHat , b:Snare, HiHat )

Piano: Chris Spruit
I added the lead guitar parts, fills and solo

Mixed in Reaper with plugins from Waves and iZotope, mastered with Ozone12.

Counting hours (2016, Chris Spruit)

The light of the day , is fading out
Melting down within the heat , the life of this town
The girls and boys, in the neighbourhood
Will get the call, to run back home
before the nightly curtain falls

Chorus:
Get home soon, when the Night comes down
Head back home, when the sun gets low
Find me home, counting hours down the curbstone
Leave a light on for you, on the window sill
When the night gets still, you know I will
Find me home counting hours , down the curbstone

The woman next door, she turns the radio on
The thin white duke was a wonderful bloke,
it is my favourite song
For my love , maybe he sings to me
Wild is the wind darling, cling to me
Like the leaf to the trees

Chorus

Bridge:
There were times in life, you know
that I walked through every open door to see
the dark side of the moon
Every time from now I’ll spend with you,
take me further on to see,
my colours shine on you

The original version from 2016 is here if anyone is interested: Counting Hours 2016 (ReverbNation)

Dave,

I really love the lyrics and melody on this one. I also love the way Chris approaches the vocal - it has that slow-burn feel. She is an amazing singer.

You and Marty are truly outstanding musicians. Some absolutely excellent guitar and bass lines. The mix is pro and sounds awesome.

Great, great stuff!

Hi Dave!
A great song all round, but an extra special like for that bridge - wonderful.

Well written by Chris and everyone did a fantastic job for their part!

Excellent song, Dave.
Arrangement and mix is great. Sympathetic to the lyric.

It may be my ears but I detect a little harshness on the vocal.
As I say, maybe it's just these worn out ears of mine.
Enjoyed it a lot.

Super song, Dave/Chris/Marty! A really nice SOUND (again!) and great, supportive performances by all. Dave, you hit all my buttons on that solo. SO nice...

I'm hearing some of the harshness that Vic refers to in the lead vocals, but not enough to ruin the listen. Like the ending a lot. You may want to extend the reverb tail a bit longer to let that last note linger a bit for the listener.

Glad you resurrected this one, it's a real stunner.

Hi Dave,

A really well produced song. As others have said, your lead, Marty’s bass and Chris’s vocals are all on the mark. Most excellent, kind regards

Yes, we wanted the bridge to really stand out and lead into the guitar solo.

Thanks, Andrew!

This was quite different than your usual blues-rock fare - almost delicate. Didn't recognize Chris's vocal at first, but it soon got familiar again. Great song, the whole band did well!

Hi Dave, Chris and Marty,

I heard the song some days ago on the channel of Chris on YouTube!
A fantastic song, Chris's vocals are beautiful.
The lead and bass parts were wonderful to follow and have a huge impact!
I love how Chris plays with the tension between the lyrics and the melody. Really well done!

Recently I saw a video where all of you were making a song. The video was 5 years old, but so nice to see.
I guess I was lucky finding it. It made me think, what if we -in the forum- have more of those videos from "behind the scene".
I know, it isn't always easy. If you have the lead guitar in Canada, the bass guitar in the U.S. and the vocals in Germany...
But, let's think about it...

I just wrote on Bob Dean's new post that I listened to it on YouTube - I clearly remember the video - and I know I commented on it, but there's nothing there now. So I also 100% clearly remember this song and video and I *know* I left a positive comment, but there's nothing there now. In fact if I remember correctly Chris also posted this video on her YT page and I also commented on that. … I've just checked and it's ditto, so I'd better log-in to YT ASAP to check out if other posts I commented on still have the comments. Anyway, "Counting Hours" is 100% quality all around: music, lyrics and vocals!

Hi Dave.

What a great listen. Chris's singing is superb, Marty's bass is perfect and your guitar work is awesome. Moreover, this melody and these lyrics are truly inspired writing. I love everything about this. I thoroughly enjoyed listening.

Hi Vic,

Ron detected some harshness on the vocal too, and as soon as you guys mentioned it I knew exactly what was causing it. Fixed now, and the fixed version will be on the CD, can't update the mix on YouTube unfortunately. And I think that shows that my ears might be more worn out than yours, 'cause I can't tell the difference, it's high frequency stuff and I've lost a lot of being able to hear those properly.

Thanks for checking out the song, and great to see you back here!

Hi floyd,

I do have a new one in the works, but I want to get these old tunes done first. Normally I wouldn't post remixes, but in the case of these songs that are almost 10 years old, most of the people that hang out here now were not around for the original.

Thanks for everything!

Hi Ron,

Happy you liked the song and thanks for mentioning the solo, sometimes I get it right wink

For the vocal, I have a couple of vocal chains I use on her vox that I've developed over the last 10 years and more than 100 songs that just work. I get into trouble if I mess with them, which is what I did on this song blush Thanks for pointing it out, my ears aren't good enough to hear subtle things like that.

That's the difference between music that came from me and music that came from Chris, I'm the blues/rock guy. There has been a few music ideas that came from Chris, one is a Sea Shanty in 3/4 time. Might redo that one at some point.

Thanks, Bob!

Oh, such a terrific write. Chris is quite a talented --gifted-- ingredient. Love that piano. The lyrics are sensational. Thanks so much for letting me give this ne a go. Dave, you and Chris are such a big and beautiful part of my life.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
