Sock Hop

A three hour Sunday quickie!

Circa - 1958
Place - the high school gym
Reason - a sock hop
Back in those days dances were held in the gym but you had to remove your shoes, i.e. hense the name sock hop. So picture yourself back in those greaser days strolling on the dance floor. For those whom don't know what the strolling dance was google it. I tried to emulate the sound of that era.

BiaB style - Blues 12/8 - Slow 12/8 Blues
I deleted the guitar and strings
Bass - Ample Bass - Upright - Walking Bass
Drums - SSD-5 - Classic Classic Vintage
Piano - EZ2 Keys - Upright - Saloon - I slightly detuned it as many school pianos were not perfectly in tune

I am playing both the rhythm and lead guitar parts on my Casio Strat and via my breath and keyboard controller the Swam Tenor Sax.

As always all comments are welcomed.

I hope you had some lovely and friendly partners for the sock hop, Mario. But be careful not to step on each other's toes, especially without shoes!
The retro atmosphere is well captured.

Man, does Bud ever remember sock hops.
This brings back some great imagery.
Sometimes the cheer leaders with their moves would hijack the dance. smile

Well done in performances and production and thanks for the memories!

Man, you guys are _really_ old.
I had to Google everything you said.
Most of my knowledge about that era comes from the movie "Back to the Future", which your song would fit into perfectly.
However, the Casio strat sounds somewhat out of place in this era grin

I've heard of socks and hops, even hock shops but never heard of a Sock Hop in the UK.
I can imagine the dance though and I'm sure we had similar.
Nice relaxing tune.

Vic.

Hi, Mario.

I've never been to a sock hop, but that seemed a good proxy! smile

Thanx so much Laurent. I never danced at a sock hop or at any other dance. I was usually playing in the band.

Janice and Bud, I'm glad that I could bring back some fond memories to Bud.
I know of one cheer leader that not only hijacked the dance floor but also my heart, my wife!
Thanx for those very kind words.

Thanx Brian. Actually sock hops stopped in our area just prior to my high school days but I have seen them on TV. Are you sure about the strat being out of place? Are you referring about the tone or the fact it isn't a Gibson like Chuck Berry used to play?

Thanx Vic. I know that the stroll dance was very popular here in 1958. I would be very surprised if the UK didn't have that dance our one very similar to it.

You really captured that one.
Nice work on the controller and guitars (cool tone).
Cool sax.
Good mix.

Ginchy, Mario!

Superb job, Mario. That sax sounds GREAT, and I like the strat tones/licks on the Casio. Nice band, the BiaB piano sounds great, too.

Bowzer would be proud.

Thanx so much Floyd. I did try to emulate the guitar tone to early Chuck Berry's guitar tone.

Thanx Ron. I tried to have the sax growl at bit on this one. Yes, I do like that BiaB piano track also.

Hi Mario!
It’s amazing how your sax adds so much to the hop style sound! I too was transported to Back to the Future ‘Enchantment by the Sea’ dance.

They still had sock hops in the early 60s too when I was going to school, not sure when that ended, maybe '65 or so. I went but was always *way* too shy to ask a girl to dance wink

Nice one, Mario, you captured that era quite well.

Close my eyes and there it is, the dimly lit gym with the meanest teachers making sure we didn't dance too closely. Yeah, my view is from the stage where we all took our socks OFF, ala Oteil. Man, this is fun, Mario. That sax player was really too good for our band; maybe a visiting cousin from Sweden. Seriously, Mario, I love what you do. FANtastic.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanx so much Andrew. I'm glad the Delorean took you to the sock hop in 1958.
