I've been exploring this a bit more.

First, thanks for the Layers hint ... there are several useful featyures on those tabs.
When I looked for the Print Summary option, it and other buttons were off the bottom of the dialog. I just had ro resize.

Some of what I was trying to do is easier than I'd realised as I wasn't really aware of the percentage box in the main song-settings area (the "Relative Tempo"). Setting that to 40% gives me the very solemn intro that I want, including the count-in, which is great ... so far. But at present I still can't see how to get back to 100% on the bar settings. The F5 bar settings appear to change the headline tempo, not the headline "Relative Tempo" percentage.

I presume that headline percentage primarily is aimed at people practicing a song at a slower tempo, rather than as a means to achieve what I'm trying to do.

I think this all boils down to a number of piecemeal little features that don't really work together as an overall strategy. Maybe that's inevitable with a mix of needs for tempo changes: song tempo changes, practice tempos and so on. I do though think the change by should allow more than 100% in one step, particularly as it allows -90% in one step ... that would take several bars to restore the original tempo.

My strategy now is probably to set the main tempos for the slow part, set the faster parts via F5 and tweak platying speeds by the "Relative Tempo" percentage, though I would much rather see the actual tempo than a percentage.

I had started to write a wishlist post for this, but I now think perhaps I should contemplate the whole process before trying to suggest something.
