Hi guys, I'm back after a couple of years since my last song. I found this song a challenge mixing to be honest, but thats due to my rusty mixing skills.

Rescue Me

Feedback welcome

Hi Paul!
Welcome back - I joined the forum just under 12 months ago.

Your mix is really clear to me, and you’ve done an excellent job of making the style sound an integral part alongside your vocal and guitar (or is that vice versa?) - anyway, it sounds very cohesive. Great vocal as well!

I listened to ‘Back to me’ as well - thanks for the link to your SC page!

Beautiful song, and I really love your vocals, you have a good voice.
The mix is pretty good, so I wouldn't lose any sleep about that.
Enjoyed my listen [Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Welcome back, Paul.

Nice job on this song. Super vocals and playing. You've got BiaB playing the right role in providing support without distracting. The piano works especially well to my ears. Your mix is quite nice, so whatever was bothering you about that isn't obvious for this listener.

Nice return!

Hi, Paul.

Pleasant song, well sung.

Although the arrangement sounds great, what I'd really like to hear is a more upbeat tempo, and an acoustic guitar behind the chorus.

That is a chorus at 1:30ish, right? It's got a catchy, pleasant syncopation that I think would work with that.

Yeah, not the kind of feedback you were asking for! laugh

Nicely done!

Back To Me is a bit painful, even now because it sounds like I was blaming myself totally for the marriage breakup and the truth is I was just taking responsibiity for my side of things. Either way, even that song didn't save my marriage hence Rescue Me came next. I find putting my story into song is a great healing journey, if only for the the moment I listen to it. Thanks Andrew for your positive feedback.

I find listening to my songs in my DAW sounds better than the final mix/master. I think this latest version lacks a little energy plus Id love to of had a lead guitar in the instrumental part but I can't play lead.
Thanks B.D.Thomas for your positive feeback.

I trialed the expensive Autotune Unlimited but I can't justify the price so gave up on that. When I compared this mix to my previous song "Back To Me" there is a clear difference that I couldn't seem to replicate this time around although I used a M88TG mic on that one and Rode K2 on "Rescue Me". I think the M88TG gives a more intimate vocal sound and the K2 is more open. On my vocal I wanted more reverb but every mixdown it was too much. This one was the best so I stopped on this mixdown. Thank you DC Ron for your positive feeback.

Hi dcuny, I reduced the temp to 67bpm as I thought my vocals sounded better not being rushed but I am aware most of my songs are a bit on the slower side. I didn't record my guitar well. I just plugged it in instead of recording the soundhole so my Takamine sounds a bit thin in this mix so I toned it down. I think the instrumental is the weakest part of this song as it's lacking some lead guitar and energy. The Chorus is at 0:55 + 2:10. 1:30ish is the fill/interlude. 3:22 is the chorus instrumental and final chorus at 3:57. I'm happy you pointed out those things, thanks again for your feedback.

Oh, it sounds so good, Paul. You accepted the mixing challenge and thrived. Of course, it sure help being motivated by such a well written song. Love the vocals and the lyrics. I like how the drums come in later to bring a new lift to the already inspirational sounds. HA --just realized I'm listening to I AM... which I love.

Oh, yes, Resuce Me is much more of mixing challenge. Still, you kept the magic of the write. On this one I especially like the lift in the Bridge. After listening to a few more here, I'm coming back to your SC channel.

Nothing wrong with the mix here! I love the piano and cello, both of which I use a lot. It's a very beautiful song with great vocals and a lovely production.

Thanks for your feedback BabuMusic - even though it was for my 1st song "I AM" lol. Rescue Me needs tweaking imo. I want the drums coming in at the beginning to be more punchie, less reverb on my voice and add alittle more acoustic guitar in the instrumental chorus to lift it. I'll get around to that this weekend.

Thanks for the feeback. Sounds like your were listening to my first track "I Am" as thats the only one with the Cello but this post is about my 8th track "Rescue Me".

Hi Paul,
You've created a beautiful song, first in 1992 and now with this remix. I completely agree with those who say this mix is amazing! I don't think your skills have become so rusty...

You use exactly the instruments I like to use in many of my songs. A piano and a cello give that special feel that sensitive songs need. And the fact that you later supplement them with drums, bass, and guitars gives the whole thing a boost. And all this while still hearing the piano and cello as the leading instruments of the song.

And your voice is truly amazing. It hasn't become rusty either! So... kudos for this excellent work!
Hans

Hi. Lovely song with very good performances.

(In terms of the mix, I want to tuck the piano and maybe the vocal in a little bit, but please take that with a grain of salt.)

Paul, what a great song
Fantastic arrangement
Loved the piano and your vocal
Outstanding lyrics
Your mix was perfect
Loved it

FYI - You probably know this already but Fender Studio Pro comes with the monophonic version of Melodyne. You must upgrade Melodyne if you want a polyphonic version.

Thank you Birchwood, I appreciate your encouragement. I'm actually planning on redoing I AM (1992) and the rest of my songs that are on my SoundCloud account except the last two recent songs.

Thank you Scott. I edited Rescue Me and added a bit of glue so I think the vocals sit alittle better in the mix. I didn't touch the piano but maybe that sits better to now? Thank you for your feedback. It all helps improve our mixes.

Thanks Mario for your encouragement, I have Melodyn Studio 5.4.2.006 but on this song I didn't need to use it.
