First came the "Venus Twinkles" instrumental and then the version with vocals, "Venus Twinkles [Lady of Love]", after which I couldn't resist seeing if I could create a rock version, though I wasn't sure it would work. Once I'd gotten the new instrumentation arranged and mixed I added Lucy's vocals from the ["Lady of Love]" version, despite that she's mostly a soft-toned singer, then to add a bit more depth to them I added my demo vocals which I'd previously sent to Lucy. The two vocal tracks worked extremely well together, which is why I expected this to be a duet, but both sets of vocals needed to be a lot more extroverted for a rock version. It took awhile to get things sorted as initially Lucy was on holiday, but the new higher-pitched vocals and harmonies she soon presented I think are *spectacular* and so very, very good that adding new male vocals would have taken away from them. So in the end this definitely very solid rock version has become my favourite of the three. In three places Lucy sings "… who you are" and the 2nd time she sings that "who" (at 2:30 in) her volume and the note are so pure that it hits a frequency which literally makes my solar plexus tingle! Play it at least loudish and enjoy!
BiaB samples used:
Rhythm Guitars 1 & 2: Jovian Divine Alt Rock Soloing ~ Mike Durham
Rhythm Guitars 3 & 4, plus 2nd and 4th Guitar solos: Nashville Radio Power Bal Solo ~ Danny Rader
Bass: Jovian Divine Alt Rock Soloing ~ Dow Tomlin
Organ: Giddy Up Country Ballad w Organ ~ Blair Masters
Drums: Jovian Divine Alt Rock Soloing ~ Shannon Forrest
Synth Bell Pad: 80s Soundtrack w/ Bell Pad ~ Ed (Great Oz) Clare
Guitar solos 1 & 3: Guitar solo: Praise & Worship w/ Power Pop So ~ Dave Cleveland
Harps 1 & 2: Heaven Blissful Celtic Harp Pop Sharlene Wallace
Kotos: New Age Bossa w/ Koto Synth ~ Miles Black

* I did a Soren AI addition to the Lucy Vocals mix to make it a tad more smooth.
*I had to silence 5 high clicks in the Heaven Blissful Celtic Harp Pop stem.
*The 2nd Praise & Worship w/ Power Pop So(lo) is a hybrid of 2 solos as the opening fade in and closing fade out of the original didn't quite work.
* The New Age Bossa w/ Koto Synth stems are from different samples played together.

C - 4/4 - 120bpm - 160 bars - 5:30

Works also well as a rock song.
Actually, it works pretty well.
For my taste, the intro is a bit long (at least for my attention span), but hey, I write pop music smile
Enjoyed my listen.

Chay,

This works great in a rock format. Awesome vocals and a superb mix. Love the big bold sound!

Nicely done, Chay. Sounds like a Rock Opera anthem. Super guitar solos. Great mixing throughout. Like how you've mixed the lead and harmony vocals FX chain, that's a cool effect.

Thanks, B.D., but as it's the exact same chord structure of the "[Lady of Love]" version that intro had to be as long as it is. I also like it, you naughty popster! laugh Actually I wouldn't class your material as pop, but Indie.

Thanks, Bob! I'm really pleased with the result, particularly as Lucy really excelled herself. She was initially uncertain that she could manage a rock version, but she did a 100% perfect job.

Thanks, Ron! Re the harmony vocals FX chain, that's all Lucy's work. She sends me that various stems and usually I do the mixing, but her own finished mix was just perfect.

OH YEAH!! Rock works so well, Chay. I really like the vocals --very tight, and i like the softness in this rock song. Definitely my favorite of the 3 of them. You always manage to give your music such amazing backing bands, and then you do a great job of featuring them. Excellent in many ways!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks, Marty! Yep, it's definitely my favourite of the 3 versions, albeit that the original instrumental and then "Lady of Love" with the added vocals have a much more varied and creative arrangement. I think Lucy likes my positive lyrics as now that I want to be producing sung songs she's pestering me to more pronto! laugh

Chay, this works extremely well as a rock song.
Great mix; you are an expert at choosing and blending RTs
Loved those guitar leads as they fit perfectly to the excellent bass track
Super work with those vocals
Loved that backing band
Loved the song

Thank you so much, Mario! Lucy was unsure at first if she could sing a rocker, but she really outdid herself this time!

Nicely done, Chay, I enjoy hearing the vocal in there. Instrumentals are fun to do, I did quite a few of them myself back in the day, but working with a vocalist is even more fun wink

Enjoyed!

Thanks, Dave! 100% agree about working with a vocalist. Great vocals lift all songs into a higher octave. B.D.'s new post is 100% evidence of that!

Hey Chay,

It always sounds like you are having so much fun with these tunes. The instrumentation certainly is fascinating, and the mix sounds great.

Have a great rest of the Sunday.

Thanks, David! Yes, I do have a lot of fun with tracks like this - plus I want to be doing more vocal songs now - but I didn't have fun with my last 2 posts despite that "Winter Dream" was my most successful to date on this forum and my 3rd best re YT views; then "Iola Tao" which I really struggled with and is in my least favourite few, but so far it's still had more views than this! Like Dave and I'm sure others, it's sooo frustrating when favourite pieces get less views than those far better! laugh

I find that your productions take on a whole new dimension when they're sung. It's excellent, with a great blend of vocals and solo guitar.

Thank you, Laurent! I've just begun a new project with Lucy and hopefully 2 other Argentinean lady vocalists for a different kind of song and BVs. It'll be a rocker, too!

Hi Chay,

Well, something completely different from what you're used to! It's a very punchy, cheerful pop/rock song with an amazing guitar solo!
The singing immediately reminded me of LUV, a famous Dutch girl pop group from around the 80s/90s.

It is indeed funny/interesting to hear how the vocals can make your instrumental song something completely different (I believe Laurent wrote that too).
You did a good job with this!

Hans
