Back in 2020 I bought Coyote Forte DXI.
Today, I upgraded my 2021 BiaB to the 2026 version.
Can/Should I still install Coyote Forte DXI? Should I use it, or something different?
Don't know that much about MIDI, as you can probably guess.

Coyote Forte DXI Is ancient history. Not sure that a 64bit version was ever released. Here’s a tech note from 2018 on DXI synths and BIAB. 2018 was the transition year from 32bit to 64bit for BIAB. DXI and BIAB Tutorial

I can't advise -
When I need GM I just use my hardware synths GM banks
I mean Coyote WT is still included but it's pretty basic/tinny
There are still some software GM synths but they need to be set up usually with a GM soundbank
There are free options, hopefully others speak up
SynthFont may be one

Michael. PGM provides a full updated License for "Synthfont - VSTSynthFont64". When you install this you will likely have to chose a "Soundfont" file. I don't recall what is provided as a default, but you can find these SF files via google. They are generally free. I recommoned Coyote Forte GM.sf2 which is 64 bit. If you have trouble finding it, send me a PM. Exact same sounds as your old 32 bit Coryote Forte.

PGM provides a full updated License for "Synthfont - VSTSynthFont64". When you install this you will likely have to chose a "Soundfont" file. I don't recall what is provided as a default, but you can find these SF files via google. They are generally free. I recommend Coyote Forte GM.sf2 which is 64 bit. If you have trouble finding it, send me a PM. Exact same sounds as your old 32 bit Coyote Forte wave table. The VSTSynthFont64 installer adds the GMGSx.sf2 and GMGSx2.sf2 files to the default VST plugins folder and defaults to GMGSx.sf2. I don't know what the difference is between the two. I have an SF2 folder on an external SSD with some other SF2 soundfont files. You can point VSTSynthFont64 to any of them via the Files & Folders tab in Options. While I was bookmarking the SynthFont home and downloads pages, I noticed that there was a minor update available. I had v3.612 installed, so I d/l'd v3.613 and installed it. I also want to point out that it can be used in other VST-compatible apps, like Gig Performer and all 3 of my DAWs (Reaper, Bitwig Studio and Studio Pro). When you click on the "Show registration info" button in Options, it says "Courtesy of Band-in-a-Box".  SynthFont home page SynthFont downloads pageHere's a video comparing 5 different soundfonts playing the same MIDI. There are download links in the video description. The Omega GMGS2.sf2 soundfont is the 24-bit version of the Colombo GMGS2.sf2 16-bit soundfont. The 5th soundfont download link doesn't do anything, but I d/l'd the other 4.

I guess I’m in way over my head.
I probably should clarify what I’m trying to do here.
I probably won’t write any midi music in real band.
What I probably will do is write music in band in a box and then move that over to real band for further attention. (“Butchery” might be a better word.😝)
So I might end up working with mid files or real tracks or both in Real Band.
To date, I installed the VST 64 item that was mentioned.
I guess there’s another step called “sound fonts“. I didn’t do that yet because I don’t know if that will make a difference to what I am doing. Does it?
So let’s say I get the sound fonts issue all sorted out. I imagine I have to set the midi output settings or something somewhere.
If that’s the case, exactly how would I change those settings. They seem pretty complicated and confusing to a layman.

Let me say this.... learning and understanding and applying midi synth sounds in BIAB midi was one of the most significant things I learned. I highly recomend you make this a priority. It is not complicated and confusing once you figure it out and the rewards that follow are well worth the time and effort. Will this make a difference, hell yes! We are talking about the sound quality of what you are listening to. Midi can sound like a pipe-organ at the circus or it can sound like a lush and vibrant piano. If you have installed the SythnFont 64, you now need to set it as your Default Synth in BIAB. [OPTIONS - midi audio driver setup - Use VST/Dxi Synth - Route midi thru to midi driver- Select the VST/DXi Synth]. This should open the Synthfont GIU where you can set what SF files you have. Here is how far I got.
Under midi/audio driver set up in the upper right corner. It says coyote wave table DXI.
But down further on the right side about halfway it says VSTI/DXI Synth [synth font: VSTsynth font64]
When I open that Grey GUI shown in your sketch it does not show gm.sf2 like yours. Instead it says: GM.DLS in the “sound source file column.
So I must be missing something.

Two quick things. 1) Pay no attention to "...Under midi/audio driver set up in the upper right corner. It says coyote wave table DXI" Once you check the two boxs below that BIAB will only use what you have selected in the box under the checks " VSTI/DXI Synth [synth font: VSTsynth font64"
2) sounds like you have the The VST synth GUI open ("grey GUI"). So now you need to select a Sound Font file. HIt the "open soundfont" button and point it to the BIAB SF file. BIAB provides options for this in C:\bb\data\libx64. If you want the the Coyote Forte GM.sf2 I would need to send this to you.
If this works now the VSTSynth will become your Default synth for all midi. You will see this in the slot 1 of the mixer for every track.

It looks like it’s working and thanks so much!
When you start a new song, it seems like something in the mixer window or somewhere should show that indeed you are using the chosen application rather than the default.
Is there somewhere that that shows?
I didn’t have the font that you mentioned, but while I was messing around, I found a font called.
Fluid R3_GM2-2.SF2.
I have no idea as to whether that’s a good one or not. It did sound better than the default, though.
Which one do you think I should ultiy get? I’m not a professional composer or anything like that, but I do like sound that’s more lifelike than a Nintendo game.😝

Timbres of Heaven is another.
I used to use Chaos.sf2 and I can send that one if you want. It's a 12MB one.
Hard to say which your tastes would prefer.
Dan, I'll take your Coyote one for my collection if you want to post it.
There used to be a way too use SF2 for your default (Windows) DSL file but MS ruined that (surprise)

The only place you will see the Name of the Soundfont file (.SF) is in the VSTsynthfont64 GUI. BIAB will show that your Default Midi Synth is assigned to the VSTSynthfont64 in the mixer on each track it is used on and in the Midi/Audio Setup window.

At the risk of sounding like a TV detective, a couple more questions.
Seems like if you touch the VST settings in midi options the sound font reverts back to the old default. Is there some way to lock the settings down?
Also, is it advisable to purchase even better fonts, or would that be pointless?

Seems like if you touch the VST settings in midi options the sound font reverts back to the old default. That would kind of defeat the purpose of the "default", right?. That certainly does not happen here. The selection and configuration of the midi synth should stay exactly has you leave it between sessions. You may need to "show" us what you are doing. Can you video capture your screen? And regarding the question about purchasing GM-SF files, I believe their time has come and gone for the most part. The money today in virtual instruments such as VSTi's in Kontakt or TuneTracks or any other VSTi host. These applications go beyond the old GM days to more customized and propriatary based applications for quality sounds.

I can't seem to paste in a screenshot, even though I know you guys do it all the time. If I could show you screen, number one would show what appears in the GUI right after I pick the sound font. All the slots have the correct new sound font in the column.
The song I'm then working on will use that font.
When I do a New Song, the sound font changes and if I click in the midi options thing and open up the GUI, the GUI has changed back to the default font. Screenshot 2 would show the column completely reverted.
Maybe there's a "Save" button or something that I am not seeing.

What are XPro Styles and Xtra Styles PAKs?
XPro Styles PAKs are styles that work with any version (Pro, MegaPAK, UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition) of Band-in-a-Box® 2025 (or higher). XPro Styles PAKS 1-10 includes 1,000 styles!
Xtra Styles PAKs are styles that work with the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box® 2025 (or higher). Xtra Styles PAKs 1-21 includes 3,700 styles (and 35 MIDI styles)!
The XPro & Xtra Styles PAKs are not included in any Band-in-a-Box® package.

The Xtra Styles require the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box®. (Xtra Styles PAK 19 requires the 2025 or higher UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition. They will not work with the Pro or MegaPAK version as they require the RealTracks included in the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition.
