Your machine may be new enough that it doesn't use hyperthreading.
As for what Matt said that is also important. At least for me. My setup is sort of unique in that I'm using multiple WDM outs with a Creative A2ZSNB but using KX drivers. My screen layout is such that I have 3 partial screens showing. If the cursor on the tracks view reached the end at the same time as the cursor on the chord sheet the load of both pages turning at once would cause my soundcard to go out of sync with itself. Creating a seperate hardware profile disabling the network card and what else was not needed fixed this. HW profiles is an excellent tool and often overlooked.
