I have the same book, but I have read it only once... maybe I should read it again, because it seems to produce beautiful emeralds in your hands smile Yes, great lyrics, great subject, colorful images... and happiness is green, that's why I wait eagerly for spring which seems to be still very far away here, still snowing and freezing... your song is very good medicine until spring comes.

Excellent chorus with lovely melody and uplifting banjo. And the band works perfectly for your vision, the fiddle and the acoustic guitars give this song tasteful earthy mood. Great work with the vocalist.

It ain't easy being happy.

You've hit all the marks. Your singing. The instrumentation. The melody, a fantastic melody. This reminds me of a McCartney song. Well done!!!

Liam’s vocal has a warm timbre and looseness that sounds very natural.

We love the lyric and the bouncy, joyous feeling of the melody.
While listening we were watching the daffodils in our yard blowing to and fro in the breeze and the new shoots of green popping out on the trees. 😊

The band sounds great and the fiddle solo and fiddle fills are extra special.
And the mix perfectly supports the song.
Open, airy and excellent subtle dynamics.

This is wonderful:
“Now sitting here beside you
In this carefree country meadow
Birds tweeting sweetly
In the trees while you dream
Nature’s joy is everywhere
As far as I can see
Yes, happiness is green”

Cool concept and we loved it!

Despite the synth vox it sounds like a Noel song - always a good thing in my book.
Happiness is whatever works and any colour you like..Kermit would agree with you though.
The solo was a cool idea too.

Noel,

It's a very refreshing song with a beautiful melody.
Your personality shines through.
Using colors as song titles is quite hard to come up with.
It makes me want to read "The Songwriters Idea Book."
I can't read it all the way through in English, so I'll look for a translated version on Amazon.
I enjoyed listening to this uplifting song again this time.

Best regards.

Nicely done, Noel, enjoyed!

Hi Dave,

I've seen lots of movies and TV shows set in Canada over the years and via these, I've got to see the awe-inspiring freeze of winter as well as the equally awe-inspiring green of summer. Although I haven't experienced it first-hand, I can appreciate what the first flicker of a Canadian spring must look like as it begins to awaken. It must bring joy to the soul to know that you have survived and thrived through yet another winter. That kind of 'happiness' is definitely "green".

Thanks for taking time to visit, to listen and to comment smile

Hi Vic.

As those legendary old folks once said, "Great minds think alike"! I'm looking forward to hearing where colours took your songwriting. And I agree with you, this world is a pretty unhappy place right now. Hopefully, it will spring back to be a better world sooner rather than later.

Thank you for finding time to have a listen. I appreciate your visit and your comments.

I’ve always loved songs at this tempo range that use that bass style - I think because I am an acoustic rhythm guitarist, it suits two quick down muted half-strums on the E and A strings to mimic the bass. Anyways, I digress …

A good rhythm feel to this song at a nice slow pedestrian pace (= calming) and the synth vocal almost glides over the top of this. The banjo was a pleasant surprise - I’ve used that RT myself - and I love its syncopated feel. The fiddle was also a surprise, and it gave the song a ‘back to basics’ feel - which I also think is what happiness is - the uncomplicated, tech-free, simplicity of ordinary things. I was also surprised by the chord movement returning to the root chord at the end of a verse 2, verse 3, instrumental, and verse 4 - but not verse 1 which ended on the V chord to tension/release to verse 2. However that might say more about my chord proclivities than yours.

Is happiness green? Certainly, the colour green reminds people of things that bring joy, and predominantly things of nature, and often used as a colour metaphor for growth. In fact, I think if you removed all plant life in the broadest sense (those using chlorophyll and photosynthesis) and animals or insects that camouflage amongst plants, we might have very little green colour on Earth, so in that sense, green should give everyone happiness because we have it.

Well done, Noel! I love it.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks heaps for giving me such detailed feedback. I really enjoyed reading through your comments. Like you this kind of style sits really comfortably with me.

You've got a good ear for identifying chord progressions! Sometimes, if I want a section to lead into the next section I often end on V. It's just something that appeals to me. Nothing more than that.

Your thoughts on the colour green are very interesting. I think you are absolutely correct. As I sit here pondering your comments, I can see that in my per-retirement days as a science teacher, this would have made a very interesting question for my classes. Without chlorophyll to make plants, just about all life on the surface of the earth would not have a primary food source. So in many ways, 'green' is one of life's fundamentals! I wish that I could say I thought that deeply about the colour when I chose the title, but I didn't. It was purely an 'on the spur of the moment' choice.

Thanks for taking the time to have a listen and pass on your thoughts. I appreciate it.

Dear everyone,

I apologise that it has taken me a while to thank each of you for having a listen to my song. I've had a few health issues in addition to a computer failure. Honestly, I don't wish that combination of things on anyone. I've now improved a bit and I have a new computer, so I can finish off what I started before everything went a bit haywire for me.

Hi Rob.

Thanks for taking the time to visit. I actually (probably unsurprisingly) thought of Kermit more than once as I wrote these lyrics! Like you, I'm also a supporter of the environment. We only have a single Earth and there are a lot of people so busy making money from the planet that they disregard the need to treat our world with respect and consideration. Unfortunately, a lot of damage that has been done cannot be undone. All we can do now is mitigate it. Maybe one day, people will learn.

Hi David,

Thanks for noticing the lyrics. I spend a lot of time listening to old songs, and I think the language has rubbed off onto me a bit. My favourite period of music is Tin Pan Alley from 1920 – 1950. I have no idea how my brain ended up feeling comfortable with songs from that period because I grew up with my parents listening to Australian Country music. I must have been rebellious, I guess.

Thanks for dropping in. It's always good to see you.

Hi floyd.

It's always a pleasure to see you. Thank you for taking the time to visit and listen. Also, thanks for mentioning the rhymes. When I wrote these lyrics, I didn't worry too much about obvious rhymes. I set out trying to find sounds that linked words together and to see if I could put them into a story of some kind. For these reasons, assonance, consonance and rhymes were the main tools I worked with. Everything else was just massaged into place to try and get something coherent.

Thanks again,

There were two surprises in your song; first the banjo and then the violin. They are both doing a very good job in this song. Like that!

Hans

Hi Hans.

Green is also a colour that sits very well on my psyche. I went to a high school that had a uniform based around a green jumper and I've often wondered, over the years, if maybe that brainwashed me into liking green. Come to think of it, that's probably why I chose green as the colour for happiness! Thanks for your comment about the banjo and the violin smile They came about purely from a 'trial and error' approach. That's what I like most about BIAB. There are so many good sounds to choose from.

I appreciate your visit and your time. Thank you.

I like all the percussion you added and the banjo and fiddle added the right touch.

Hi Marty.

While I didn't set out to write this song around nature, the words and the colour eventually led me there. I'm really pleased they did because Mother Nature really does highlight the importance of 'green'. Thanks for your comments, especially your comment about production. I struggle with production. It never seems to get any easier. Eventually, I just get to place where everything sounds reasonable and I'm ready to move on to another song smile

John

Hi John,

Thank you for taking the time to listen and for your kind comments. I will never listen to this song again without imagining that I'm sitting in the front room of a cottage. In fact, your comment reminded me of a cottage in Tasmania that I used to live in. It was built in the 1890s and had a really warm, comfortable atmosphere. Your words filled my mind with lots of great past memories smile Thanks for those!

Janne

Hi Janne.

I've read through that book many times. It often gives me ideas and makes me see things in a new light. I can imagine for someone like yourself who lives in Finland, the first glimpse of spring must be extraordinary after having survived the blizzards, ice, frosts and snows of winter. In Australia, spring looks nice but our winters are very mild compared to Canada and northern Europe and Asia, so the change between winter and spring is not as dramatic.

I seriously appreciate your comments. I'm not a musically creative or adventurous as you and it's uplifting for me to read your feedback. Thank for that smile

Wishing you well.

Hi ES.

Thank you so much for having a listen. I really appreciate your thoughts, too. As much as I'd like to admit otherwise, any reminders in my music that give it a McCartney vibe are purely by chance! I would love to be as good as McCartney/Lennon, but I'm a realist smile Writing songs is a hobby for me and I'm perfectly happy that that's the case.

Thanks again!

Hi J&B.

Thank you heaps for taking the time to travel over to Soundcloud and listen. I also greatly appreciate your comments. When I read your phrase about daffodils blowing to and fro in your yard, had I thought of that at the time, they would have been a perfect fit for my meadow scene smile Maybe something like

Quote
“Now sitting here beside you
In this carefree country meadow
Daffodils are swaying
In the breeze while you dream
Nature’s joy is everywhere
As far as I can see
Yes, happiness is green”

I really appreciate your comments on the mix and the band. Putting a musical ensemble together is not a great strength of mine, and I often go through many combinations of instruments before I end up with something I like. That's the beauty of BIAB, though. There's always something suitable if you're patient and look carefully (and ignore genres).

Thank you again and I hope that spring is looking really good for you both.

Hi Ray.

It's good to see you. Thanks for visiting and commenting. I'm finally starting to feel very comfortable with Synth V. I spend quite a bit of time shaping the voices so that they sound as human as I can possibly make them smile I totally agree with you about 'happiness' and 'colour'. Green was the first colour that came to mind when I thought of happiness so I went with it. It would be an interesting challenge to write a couple of other songs where I choose a different colour for happiness and see where each choice leads me. Now that I sit here thinking about it, I might actually try that! Thank you for the idea.

I hope things are going well for you up north!

Hi Shigeki Adachi.

It's always a pleasure to see that you have visited one of my songs. Thank you smile I appreciate your comments a great deal. Your English never ceases to amaze me. When I read your replies, everything is perfect. You sound like a native-born English speaker. My Japanese, on the other hand, it totally non-existent.

My son studied Japanese for a number of years but I only know a few words here and there. I love watching Japanese series, though, on TV. The sound of your language sits very comfortably on my ears, and Japanese scriptwriters are very inventive. I'm presently watching a series on Apple TV called "Drops of God". It's a Japanese-French-English production and it's very, very entertaining.

Thank you again for visiting smile

Thanks, BD. I was lucky to have a mother who always managed to see the best in everything. Some of her attitude to life seems to have rubbed off on me. These days, even though there's now lots that I can't do, I can still write songs and that always brings me a few smiles smile The easiest way that I've found to deal with changing circumstances is simply to define a new 'normal' and move on. That seems to work for me, and it stops me thinking about the things that I used to be able to do. Life's too short to waste it on "what might have been" and "if only".
