Joe's Apology - Soundcloud

Joe's Apology - YouTube

Happy Easter to all BIAB users.

Joe's Apology is my first published foray into finger picking. Fortunately for all of you, this is an instrumental so you wont hear any of my dulcet tones. So this tune came about as a challenge within our guitar group by our third member, not Andrew Dee. The challenge was to do something else with the chord progression C G D A E (circle of fifths) as was used by Jimi on Hey Joe. We weren't limited (as far as I'm aware) to keep it a completely Major progression, so that's where I've sourced my variation using minor, sus, maj7 chords etc. I don't profess to being a fluent finger picker, I have to reach saturation practice point before I can get it to a point of acceptable fluidity. As you will hear with this recording, it's a steady picking pattern, nothing too fancy. Any comments on the mix would be welcome. I've listened through 2 sets of headphones, PC speakers and even the TV. They all vary in which tone and instruments they accent, I do need to invest in a set of reasonable monitor speakers. As you may or may not know, Hey Joe is a song about a man who kills his partner and flees to Mexico. This is sort of like a sequel, where he is captured and is remorseful for his actions. Don't examine the still AI images too intensely, AI can be nonsensical. I'm releasing this ahead of our groups scheduled get together next Wednesday, sorry Andrew, I've been sat on it for several weeks now and I'm in need of some community cheer. I also need to get my fingers in gear ready for Wednesday. I hope you all find it acceptable. Kind regards.

PS Get those fingers loosened Mr.Dee.

Nice composition, Lee, and very nicely played. Like the variety of colors you've chosen for the chords. Your playing is clean and articulate, and recorded quite well. Also like the overall mix and how every instrument has a place but no one instrument ever disrupts the flow you've established.

Interesting challenge, and very well met. Bravo!

Lee,

Great tune. Nice progression. Your guitar playing is excellent. I really like your mix here - clean & spacious.

I would say that you have met the challenge!

Hi Lee,

Sort of a modified Travis picking pattern I think? I use a pattern that is very similar.

Nice playing and nice composition, enjoyed the listen!

Hey Lee, I can see where you are going with that guitar with that guitar in your hand!
Super clean finger picking!
A fantastic backing band and the perfect mix.
Loved it

Hi K-Dub!
This response to the challenge was unexpected - but pleasantly received! I’ll have to sharpen up my very narrow and elementary pool of fingerpicking patterns if I’m going to play along on Wednesday. I just need to get the cooperation of my poor arthritic right hand.
I love your chord choices, and particularly the Em - Em/D# - Em/D - Em/C#. The cello was a good touch, as were the vocal ooos. Am#5? Is that a sneaky way of getting a F major chord into the progression? grin
I’d say you’ve interpreted well and accomplished the challenge. I’ve taken a liberty or two with my version as well - I just need to tweak the mix, but not sure if I’ll have the video done for Wednesday - mine might be a forum post a week later.
Andrew

Thank you for listen and kind words Ron. Yeah I was extremely happy with how well it all gelled together especially where the verse is descending at the end. I also liked the C to Csus2 at the verse opening, such a light and airy feeling compared to the darkness of the end of the verse. Appreciate your comments on the mix and placement, glad it’s being heard as I wanted it to be.

Cheers Ron, kind regards.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your kind words, high praise indeed. The beauty of recording is that you don’t get to hear all the bad guitar playing that goes into it, just the good parts. My playing is good on this at the moment because I’ve played it so intensely, leave it 6 weeks and it’ll be ordinary again! Yes, the mix is minimalistic and that gives each instrument room to move and not get in the way of any other. Lots of air and space works well.

Cheers Bob, kind regards.

Thank you Blue (sorry, couldn’t find your name)

Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s Travis picking of sorts. It’s been a long time since I’ve actually looked at Travis picking, but I’m sure it’s probably that. Actually, it’s probably the pattern they use on Dust In The Wind (Kansas). I’ve noodled with that quite frequently. I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you for listening.

Kind regards.

Thank you Mario

Tell me, tell me, where am I going Mario?? To the very toppermost?

As I’ve mentioned in another post, the magic is in the discarded attempts. But practice makes permanent, and slow and steady wins the race. Glad you liked it and the mix and band were good for you.

Thank you for listening, kind regards.

Hello Mr Dee

Excellent, I’m glad it’s caught you off guard, it should make for an interesting get together. Hopefully Mr DB will also be taken aback. The beauty of this is that I didn’t have to come up with any lyrics, just let the music tell the story (ish). I enjoyed looking for that descending progression at the end of the verse, it goes to a really dark place. I didn’t go looking to include an F by using the Am#5. I was just trying to maintain the C,G,D,A,E progression in the verse, whether they be major or minor or whatever, I just kept experimenting until it sounded pleasing to my ears. Looking forward to hearing yours and seeing how you’ve tackled the same challenge.

Cheers Andrew. See you soon.
