I met him in 1968 when I was art college in Grimsby, UK (I was 17), and he and the Fish had their last gig on their UK tour at the Winter Gardens, Cleethorpes, an adjoining grim town! I and other art students were going to do the light show, but we didn't as the students union said we still had to pay to get in, so instead we enjoyed the show without working! Barry Melton was the only one of the original Fish left. Peter S. Albin and Dave Getz from Big Brother replaced Bruce Barthol and Chicken Hirsh on bass and drums, and a new guy, Mark Kapner, replaced David Cohen on keyboard. After the gig I got all of their autographs except Dave Getz' who was in a really stinging mood! Joe also signed one of my episcope slides which I'd made for the light show that never was. All of then apart from Getz were super-friendly. I was a drummer at the time and Chicken Hirsh was a major influence as he was an all around percussionist.
