Perhaps we got what we got, because people were too "forgiving", praising things that needed to be addressed properly instead of offering possible solutions and holding back on much needed critique.

Misha my friend, I agree with you. It is another horrible workaround that, like you indicated, should have been corrected decades ago. I was just trying to help the OP get the job done today.
