Bumpkin Patch on YouTube
Bumpkin Patch on Soundcloud

A nod to 2 gifted members: Andrew Dee and K-Dub Ya. Andrew mentioned they were doing a song challenge with a story. Here's one from a year ago that wasn't (and maybe never would've been otherwise) posted.

Suggested by the BiaB Style. A song about a girl who dumps the bully rich kid, and lives a great life with the poor kid.

Style is _BUMPKIN.STY (Bumpkin Rock n' Roll Country)

RealTracks in style: 4322:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm RockNRollCountryShuffle Sw 120

Bumpkin Patch

Listen to the story of the bumpkin from the patch,
and the boy who lost his girl to him that day.
They were all in town for the county fair when the flirtin' he did catch.
He swore that bumpkin clown was gonna pay.

Well, the poor boy had a patch on his blue jean pocket the back.
So the boyfriend said he'll call him bumpkin patch.

The ferris wheel spun 'round and 'round, but Patch played midway games,
He could ring that High Striker bell for fun.
When the boyfriend brought his girl nearby, ol' Patch denied his claims,
and he gave that girl the teddybear he won.

Well, the boyfriend was enraged when he felt he was upstaged.
But he swung and missed, and Patch was never phased.

You know that girl was speechless. She didn't know what to say.
Her ex-boyfriend held his bloody nose and he quickly ran away.

That gal and Patch got married June. The whole town gathered round,
and they partied till the cows came home for good.
So they had 10 kids who all looked alike in their home outside of town.
The ex is now in jail for stealing wood.

They became the perfect match and knew their love would last.
Oh, they named their place forever Bumpkin Patch.
County fairs come into town and sometimes knock the fences down.
And that's the story of the bumpkin patch. Natch

Great storytelling which had me smiling throughout after the punch and the perfectly-fitting clarinet solo. I love the idea of the "10 kids who all looked alike", but I couldn't coped with the reality! shocked laugh

Marty,

That's a great song and a great band. That arrangement suits you so well. Awesome vocal and delivery.

You are really at the top of your game these days! Loved it!

Great storytelling.
I can just picture Grandpa Babu sitting around the campfire, telling his children, grandchildren, dogs, and cats stories from "the old days" smile
With a big smile on his face.
That makes me smile, too.
And the icing is a solo by an instrument I never would have expected, but it really, really works.
Great idea!
Enjoyed my listens.

Great work Marty! Like B.D., I think your low vocal phrases are really good. They caught my attention straight away. 2 bars in and my foot was tapping - one of those songs where you know where it’s going, both lyrically and harmonically, and you enjoy the ride all the way home.

There are some wonderful scenes in this video as well - you know how I like to study what AI produces:
- The ever-changing patch and location
- The clarinet player - who’d have thunk?
- 10 kids all aged within an hour of each other as well as looking alike - man, that couple are ‘fertile’.
- I think ‘stealing wood’ - given how he was dressed - is code for ‘embezzling funds from the government lumber contract’

We should get you to participate in our song challenges more often! I think K-Dub Ya and I would both say this is mission accomplished. Well done!

Marty you struck gold again! A fantastic story set to music. Super vocal and backing band; how did you get that clarinet to fit into this song - brilliant. As usual everything was perfect.
This country bumpkin loved it.

OK, a random thought;

Hi, Marty.

Fun lyric! It seems you can take inspiration from anywhere - even BIAB Style titles! laugh

You sound great in the low end.

Hey Marty,

You sure know how to tell a story and this works really well. This feeds well into the underdog wins out theme. Don't know why you wanted to hold this one back, it's fun on so many levels. Good choice of BIAB style, loved your bass and your vocal suited the theme perfectly.

Don't tell Mr.Dee, but i'm struggling with the current challenge. I know what I want to do and that's a tragic or mysterious feel. Just can't come up with the right lyrics and and a little used progression or one that hasn't been used before. No pressure, 3 & 1/2 weeks to the next meet!! Might be a while till my next upload.

Cheers Marty.

Wow, love those low notes on the vocals! Good lyrics as always, good story. Clarinet was interesting. Good job overall.

Hey Marty!
Don’t tell K-Dub Ya, but I’m struggling with the current challenge. I’ve got a story, (sort of) a melody and chords. But I am having trouble trimming all the words into lyric lines that suit the melody and meter yet still tell a cohesive story. No pressure, 3 and 1/2 weeks to the next meet!

I think you beat both of us by 12 months!

Very cool, Marty! Super song, superbly sung. Love the rumbling low parts! Excellent band, nicely arranged. Cooler-than-cool bass. VERY inventive use of the soloists. Another finely realized piece of songcraft you've provided for us. THANKS!

I wear my bumpkin heritage proudly.

Natch! smile

Thanks, Chay. I think for this one i used CoPilot for the images. When i fed that line i was asking for too much to have it "think" that the kids would be different ages. Could've redesigned the prompt, but i like the wonkiness of Ai. Beside, i don't really find much creativity in making the videos.

Thanks, Bob. The song's creation started while purusing BiaB Styles. Yet, if you see the "in style" and "in song" designations in the stems list, you'll see i only kept the piano. Ya gotta love this program for giving us the ability to work like mad scientists.

Thanks, Brain. That clarinet is surely an odd choice as many here are suggesting, but i'm glad you say it works.

Thank you, Andrew. Yeah, those kids... Bet if we ask Ai "What is it called when humans have 10 babies in the same pregnancy?" it would answer: "An inhuman litter." HA! Dang governments. That line came when i wanted to find a crime that would rhyme with good. i was reading a book where someone stole 70,000$ worth of some exotic wood. Yep, i always like a challenge (as if life doesn't provide enough --:) )

Ha Marty, like all others; a great story. Luckily the rich guy lost here (am I against rich people? No, only their attitude)!
I really like that story, but also your vocals. They were great here, especially low, lower and higher.
And that clarinet is sounding great here. I wasn't fond of that instrument, but maybe I will use it too!
10 kids is maybe a bit too much; poor mother...

But tell me, why do you use Reaper and Cakewalk at the same time?

So, great song, Marty
Have a nice day!
Hans
