Hi All,

Our small tribute to the great folk artist Elyse Weinberg who left us some years ago. This is ELYSE.

I found her voice in a late-night hour
Some college station out past the river bend
DJ said her name like a secret he was keeping
Like he wasn’t sure he’d say it again
There was tape hiss like a summer storm
And a piano just barely in tune
She sang like she’d already vanished
Like she was leaving the room

She was playing rooms out in the canyon
When the deals were being made downtown
While the others learned how to stay standing
She was slipping in and out of the sound
They say she walked off mid-conversation
Left her songs in a borrowed case
There’s a line about something breaking
But you can’t quite place the place

Hey Elyse, were you ever really there?
A radio signal in the desert air
Still flying somewhere out of sight
In the middle of a California night

I played her record for a girl in Woodstock
She said, “Why does this feel like goodbye?”
I guess some songs don’t wait to end
Well they just look you dead in the eye
We sat there through the last refrain
Like we were keeping a watch for a sign
But the silence came in like a stranger
And took what it left behind

Hey Elyse, were you ever really there?
A radio signal in the desert air
Still flying somewhere out of sight
In the middle of a California night
