My ability to sing harmony well is pretty limited, as I'm easily swayed by melody line of a song.

Plus, pitch correction software shows me that I's often not singing the note I think I am. cry

In contrast, being able to come up with harmonies with these synth voices is a lot of fun.

Nice backing track, especially like the bass and piano combo. That sound never gets old to me. The solo turned out great and gives the arrangement a nice lift.
I can't really take credit for that - it's BiaB all the way there.

I'm glad I dug in a bit deeper with the flugelhorn. I'd gotten the library a while back, and while it sounded OK, it didn't have the realism I wanted. Adding those small articulations made all the difference.

As often happens, I read your workflow narrative and shake my head that something that sounds so smooth travelled such a difficult-sounding (to me) route. But it DOES sound silky smooth. Really appreciate you taking the time to describe the details. I always read them at least twice, and marvel at your songcraft...
I don't intend for it to sound difficult. laugh

One thing I hate is coming up with a melody line and then forgetting it. And honestly, once I'm done with a song, I tend to forget how it goes. I just don't have that sort of memory. Now, if I had to sing the song a half-dozen times, that would be a different matter. But coming up with the melody in the piano roll makes it easy to move around notes, and focus on phrasing stuff just the way I want it. I can look at the melody and see where I've got too much similarity or arpeggiated lines.

Most importantly, I can come back the next day and it's still there.

So this works out really well for me - at least, for vocals. smile

Good to see you posting again!!!
Thanks, I'm glad to be back. Time to work on another song. smile

Okay, so you got me to listen even more closely by suggesting we don't. (wow, what a predictable consumer, huh?) But i hear no questionable harmonies.
The outline is pretty much the same as the demo, so the foundation is stable.

But it's doing silliness like:

... Gm7 / Gm7/C | Abmaj7 D7 Dm/F | Gm7 / / | C11 Dbdim Db7 | Fm7 / / | Bb7 / / | Eb Cmaj7 Fdim | Bb7 ...

a lot of movement for movement's sake instead of strong harmonic motivation.

But it's jazz, right? laugh

You have the perfect lyrics for the mood, and chose a wonderful bunch of players to present the changes.
Thanks for that - I appreciate your positive feedback.

Heh. No one call me "Mr. David" except the kids in the school choir. laugh

I hadn't realized I was writing about day drinking gone bad, but who I am I to argue with an erudite interpretation of my lyrics?

So Mr David, stop being so modest about your "questionable" choices. If this is your version of "fiddling around," I suggest you keep fiddling. Your imaginary band in the smokey jazz club is officially the best act in town. Just make sure you find that USB cable eventually—I have a feeling your EWI has some stories to tell.
You're a funny guy!

Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it. laugh

And that's not a bad thing, vocals sound very natural and those harmonies are really sweet, glad to hear so many voices sing together smoothly. The arrangement is enjoyable, old but warm without modern plastic feel, something from the era of What A Wonderful World. And the lovely solo by the horn is a perfect match for the style.
I'm glad it worked! I appreciate your kind words. smile

David,

Nice write. Especially nice melody. Good prosody.
Has a tin pan alley feel. Very appropriate.

Really nice arrangement/production.
Strings sound great. Cool vocals.
Nice mix. Drums sits just right.

Several listens...

Hi David,

First of all, I’m glad you’re back with a song. I saw that you had already posted comments on other songs, but now you’re back with your own! It was about time, wasn't it?

And then the song itself: It is quite different from what I had expected from you; a song from the old jazz box!
You did a great job; the atmosphere is perfect, just like back in the day, or as I often heard it from my father (he was a real jazz lover, I a bit less so).

I had the same comment as Brain about the lead vocals (I would have preferred them a bit lower/fuller), but your explanation to him was clear enough to accept your choice as well!
And the harmonies with that female voice were truly beautiful!

So, a good comeback!

Hans

Past time, actually. laugh I've been working on my singing synthesis project again, and went down a rabbit hole trying to get automatic phoneme alignment working, grossly underestimating the complexity of the problem. It's one of those things that would be much faster to do by hand instead of trying to automate it.

I think everyone is a jazz lover... it's just a matter of degree. When I was a kid, we used to have a yearly Dixieland Jazz Jubilee. Great music, but there's a limit to how much banjo I can take in one day. wink

Heh. I did mention the melody started out an octave higher, didn't I? wink

Thanks, I really is a lovely sound, even if it is synthetic.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
