Great song, David.

There were moments when it seemed as though the arp guitar was competing with the piano for space on the stave. I just wondered if a strummed guitar would have been more effective. Otherwise, the backing band was a good fit for the mood and setting of the song.

Some miscreants have regrets (e.g. "Should never have left my fingerprints at the scene!").
Others feel remorse (i.e. that they have suddenly lost their freedom)
Some blame others for their predicament, or cheerfully brag about their misdeeds.
However, the guy in this song has examined himself and owned up to "the truth of the matter." His conscience has been pricked. He admits that it was all about his selfishness and poor choices. In so doing, he has laid the foundation for his eventual rehabilitation, redemption and restoration.

As someone else put it:

Cheats will never prosper
It's clear they're born to lose
It isn't that they're out of luck
It's just the path they choose
