Software based pitch-to-MIDI conversion is pretty common today. Melodyne does a nice job. Jam Origin has a real time conversion plugin that's pretty cool. I THINK BiaB does this now, too, though I've never looked for it. Am sure there are others.

Bought my first pitch-to-MIDI guitar in about 1988. Still have four today, though they don't get the workout they used to...

I have used Melodyne's audio to MIDI function many times with very good to excellent results; it depends on the source material on what the final results are but most of the time I have zero or very limited corrections.

Around 1988 I bought my Casio PG510 pitch to MIDI guitar. I still have it and on occasion still use it.
