Hello,
I’m considering buying a new Windows laptop, and some of the latest models use ARM processors (Snapdragon X Elite / Windows 11 ARM64). Before I make a decision, I would like to know whether Band‑in‑a‑Box 2026 works reliably on Windows ARM systems.
I already contacted PG Music support, but the reply only pointed me to the general Windows requirements page, so I’m hoping that users here may have real‑world experience.
Could anyone who has tried Band‑in‑a‑Box on Windows ARM please comment on the following points?
1. Installation and execution
– Does BIAB 2026 run correctly under x86‑64 emulation on Windows ARM?
– Any crashes, freezes, or performance issues?
2. RealTracks / RealDrums
– Do RealTracks generate and render properly under ARM emulation?
– Any issues with audio stretching or pitch shifting?
3. VST / VSTi plugins
– Are VST2/VST3 plugins working under Windows ARM?
– Have you tested large instruments (Kontakt, SampleTank, etc.)?
4. Audio drivers
– Do ASIO drivers (Focusrite, Steinberg, MOTU, etc.) work correctly on ARM systems?
– Or do you have to fall back to WASAPI?
5. Overall recommendation
– Would you recommend Windows ARM for "advanced" BIAB use (RealTracks, VST instruments, ASIO), or should I stick with Intel/AMD for now?
Any feedback, benchmarks, or personal experience would be extremely helpful.

I believe that sticking with things that are tried and true is always the best way to achieve success. Being on the cutting edge has always been dicey.
That said some folks like pioneering the trail. Me personally i prefer a solid working environment and not having to fuss with things to make them work.

For the most part I agree with Rob.
In theory, it should work OK, as you are mainly dealing with environment. I think the most important question (in my view) of how the processor you are after will handle threads. I believe (2?) years ago PGM introduced a change to BIAB that utilizes multi processor threads to generate BIAB tracks at very decent speeds. Night and day compared with previous versions. If that is something you are concerned about, I believe you should inquire with customer service / developers. Perhaps they already tested that multi thread feature with ARM and will give you a definite answer.

Bonjour d'Arcachon, Lazy Bird. I have not installed BiaB on my Surface Pro Snapdragon X Elite yet. I have installed the ARM versions of Studio Pro, Bitwig Studio and Reaper and a few x64 FX and VSTi plugins with no problems. Gig Performer (x64) also runs great on it. I use an RME Fireface UCX II on my main Win11 Pro machine, but bought a 4th gen Focusrite 4i4 for my Surface Pro because it has a native multi-client Win11 ARM ASIO driver and it cost me over $1000 less than the RME.  No glitches/problems with it. I would rather have used my old PreSonus 1810c, but its driver isn't multi-client and I don't think a native ARM ASIO driver is available yet, even though there's a Win11 ARM version of Studio Pro. The 4i4 is a very good audio interface. My primary complaint is that there's no power switch. You have to unplug the USB-C cable. I don't plan to use the Surface Pro for writing songs, but I guess it's time to install BiaB 2026 Ultra and Tonalic on it for testing purposes.

Thank you very much for your replies! They've helped me understand things better.
I agree that a stable and proven configuration is preferable, and your comments on BIAB's multithreading and the current state of Windows ARM are very helpful.
In any case, it seems that BIAB hasn't yet been successfully tested on an ARM architecture.
So I'm not going to take any risks and will stick with an Intel/AMD machine for the time being.

There was a splash screen issue with 2025 when it loaded that the staff helped me fix, but since then it's worked flawlessly. I set it on my music stand and connect it to a Yahama bluetooth speaker, or use a USB C cable to connect it to my audio interface to record my guitar. Just make sure you have an external keyboard and mouse. The icons are too small for a touch screen.

That’s interesting and useful information... but too late for me: I bought a Lenovo Yoga 7i 16" and an Intel processor :-).

while i'm happy that arm was developed in england where i was born i have to recognise that majority of studios use intel or ryzen processors at the heart of
their windows pc's.
fyi years ago as i was working on tech i suggested to uk powers that be that uk needed its own dominateing computer industry.
when uk has brilliant engineers and scientists it baffles me why the uk wouldnt have done more in terms of tech products brought to market.
my own studio that i have done an abundance of songs has not one
british tech product sadly.
so i'm curious what are the benefits of a arm pc when amazon and tech stores are flooded with new and refurb intel and amd pc's at knockdown prices ?
for example lenovo refurbs under 200 bucks with ssd.. that would run biab.
(i did a ton of songs years ago useing lesser capable processors/systems.)
i'm not posting this to be a smart A...but because i know there might be 'lurkers' new to music production who might be considering biab purchase.
and possibly this discussion might be of help.
fyi my own studio has 2 pc's...one intel mini pc (under 150 bucks) i picked up purely for the net and thus sandboxing my music production pc from contamination.
(studio pc will do over 180 tracks...mini pc too/ryzen/m.2..
gens bb tracks blink of an eye.).
in total for my production pc and net pc i paid under 600 bucks.
given the above why did you not choose intel or ryzen ?
i'm not a semiconductor engineer but..
frankly i would like to see much faster processors but the laws of
physics are a stumbling block as there are only so many transistors
that can be crammed on a chip i understand....sigh.
so we are stuck on this plateau now it seems that i find highly boring...lol.
what happened to 'moores law' ?

Hi. I went with the Snapdragon tablet purely out of logistics. I live in a small condo. I don't have an entire studio devoted to music, i have a corner in my living room. The tablet sits on a music stand. It's small, it's lightweight, and it doesn't have any fans that turn on and interfere with recordings. It's slower than most PCs but that's not a problem. I'm happy to wait. It takes about five seconds to generate all my reels tracks but that just gives me more time to get ready to play.  The only real problem is that because I'm sitting in front of the music stand on a chair, I don't have a proper desk for it. So I use a Bluetooth keyboard that sits on my lap. It gets a little annoying at times but it's the best I can do for now. I hope this answers your question. And why isn't the UK a powerhouse of computer technologies? You guys invented the first computer

doogiet. i see your situation re the condo corner....thanks. one thing you might consider for the future is a mini pc several feet away. (my mini pc has no fan noise the way its designed...has a fan...) and you end up with just a pc keyboard on the stand/lap. and monitor mounted on the wall. cant get any lighter than that. the beauty of some mini pc's is they are lightweight, sit in your hand and also depending on make have 2 ssd slots internally often that laptops dont have unless one spends big for a custom built laptop built by a company that specialises in such for recording studios. there is also a BIG advantage...with 2 built in ssd's... ie...windows has its own storage drive and one uses the second drive for music production. why is this of benefit ?? answer because there is no way that win can 'interrupt' the recording process and thus impacting production...which ive seen in the past eg 'stutters and hiccups' with one drive set ups. (interruption can also occur if a music pc is on the net.) on amazon (where i got my mini pc i love...) there are loads of powerfull low priced mini pc's....some supporting 2 ssd's. (dont buy pc's useing slow processors.) amazon normally has a 30 day return which is plenty of time to see if any purchase meets your needs via tests. talking of tests you might find the following link interesting in testing the suitability of any pc for music production... https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=795663#Post795663various tests included in the thread. eg if you run realband you can go to one test... ACTION>>TEST AUDIO PERFORMANCE which will return a rough approx of what any laptop or desktop pc can do....this test is usefull for testing out a pc. (which is what i did when evaluating mini ryzen pc's within amazons 30 day return policy.) (in rb you have 256 tracks to create on.) you might also read this thread ie when pg's rb is a better choice than bb to do a song with. eg rb track view advantages over bb bb track view re editing audio/midi....link... https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=859938#Post859938there are various other tips threads i and others started if you peruse the pg tips and tricks forum. (eg usb audio interfaces.) bottom line...this alternate idea would result in just a very lightweight pc keyboard (and mouse) on your stand/lap. re...And why isn't the UK a powerhouse of computer technologies? You guys invented the first computer. dont get me started on that...lol...its a darn shame. answer brit governments fault/no vision imho resulting in a ton of lost jobs....problem being that uk govt arent tech people...just mandarins often. fyi i'm now living in canada (lovely cdn wife) and canada has the same probs as uk. lack of future industrial vision at the political level. thus loads of lost jobs to other countries. for example ive pointed out to many cdn politicos that japan unlike canada built its own car industry. so why...instead of importing ev's doesnt canada build (like japan) its own ev industry for exporting to the world. ive pointed out to the politicos that there are 3 key industries to dominate imho in the coming years. ..cheap ev's with long ranges eg 800k before recharge. (some countries are doing r/d on 50 yr batteries.). to address range anxiety. ..future quantum technologies for computing and more powerfull cheap pc's. ..micro nuclear power sources. particularly in a country like canada with a zillion poles and electricity wires that are costly to maintain...(downed poles/wires in winter....) but nooo this country doesnt have much of a shipbuilding or aircraft industry so is looking/evaluating right now at importing foreign made fighter jets and submarines which only serves to create loadsof jobs in other countries...go figure....no vision. to be fair both uk and canada have world class medical researchers. fyi why i have high regard for pg and support their products is they are a rare cdn small company that exports to the world. c'est la vie... happiness. om

Interesting post. I'm also Canadian. I agree with you about our lack of forward thinking. Don't get me started on the pipeline situation. I'd buy an EV car if it had a range of 800,000 km. But I can't choose between running my car and running the heater to keep me warm.
Your suggestion about mounting a monitor on the wall and then a keyboard tray would actually be amazing. The only real source of friction is the keyboard at this point. If I had a keyboard tray that would attach to my music stand, I'd be set. But the music stand is an antique and is worth more than two of my guitars.
I've barely used RealBand. I mainly use Band in a Box as a jazz combo to practice with. Figuring out the medley function so it goes from one soloist to the next instead of a single solo was a bit of an undertaking.
Let me see if I can find keyboard stands anywhere....

doogiet. if you DO buy a new pc in the future.. there are a few 'gotchas'. eg...people assume because they paid 2k on a high end pc that they wont have problems. sometimes they will because said pc isnt optimised for music production. i'd like a buck for each time someone has said to me... 'but i spent 2k, how come you only spent 400 bucks and dont have probs'. the answer is simple...the 2k system hasnt been optimised for music production...mine has. fyi i got a friend to get a pc like one of the pc's at the link below. saved him big money. he called me next morning yelling 'best darn pc ive ever had'. it cost peanuts. the refurb pc below is the type of pc that used to cost thousands and was used by big commercial studios only a few years ago. now look at the crazy low price....but ya gotta be a nerd like me to appreciate it. i know at least one pg user that runs this kind of pc....will eat bb for breakfast. only needs like lots of pc's optimising for music production. (see my purchaseing a pc thread at the link i gave you upthread for more info....whatever you buy in the future ensure you test it with your apps and conduct the type of tests in the link i gave you and ensure you can return within 30 days.) link HPZ pc beast... https://www.amazon.ca/HP-Workstatio...+hp+z+workstation%2Caps%2C197&sr=8-3there are tons of refurb deals like this on the net and amazon at knockdown prices. dont sweat the fan noise issue. there are no noise fans one can get a tech to install and there are even companies (eg silentpc.com) that specialise in building silent pc's for studios. OR like many big studios do...just locate the pc aways from the mics etc. re Canada. fyi..what bugs me as a taxpayer is canada wastes/spends billions to educate people who then find they have probs getting a job because canada has never implemented an aggressive advanced big industrial base thats world beating or the grads end up wasting their education flipping burgers as some have told me. the prob being abundance of cdn uni's and schools etc but not an abundance of industrial employers. finally Ottawa has started listening to those of us who have repeatedly communicated these issues and offered solutions. in essence we need people in Ottawa with bold industrial visions. Canada for too loooong has relied on 'dig it up and ship the resources out to other countries'. who then manufacture advanced products to sell back to us...sigh. ps a typo on my part re cdn ev's. i meant a range of at least 800 kilometers. (and prices under 30,000 cdn dollars....then the ev market will soar imho.). happiness to a fellow canadian om
