Yep, those are the guitar fills. What I'm calling "fills" is more like a recurring motif. Each time it's played there are differences in timing, length, approach notes, etc., but it's the same basic motif. One continuous take, no punches.

The guitar sound is an overdriven tone favored by Robert Fripp and quite a few others in the pop/rock genre, but it's not used much in country that I've noticed.
