The Atlantic created a searchable database of the music used to train AIMillions of tracks are freely available in datasets, even if they’re not supposed to be.

Atlantic reporter Alex Reisner recently uncovered four datasets of music being used to train AI models and made them fully searchable for the public. Two of the sets are absolutely enormous at 12 million and 9 million tracks. The other two are much smaller, but still represent a significant amount of training data at over 100,000 songs each.
According to Reisner, the sets have been downloaded thousands of times and, while it’s impossible to know exactly who has used them, Google and Stability have both confirmed they have in research papers. Some of the sources, like the Free Music Archive dataset, are free to stream for personal use but require licensing for commercial applications.
While the datasets are freely available on the internet in theory, using them as training data is not as simple as downloading a ZIP file and feeding it to an AI model. As Reisner explains:
Three of the datasets I found are distributed as a list of links to songs on YouTube or Spotify. AI developers download the actual audio using tools that automate the job, some of which allow developers to bypass logins, advertisements, and mechanisms that might earn money or subscribers for creators. Such tools violate the terms of service of these platforms.
Names that pop up in the dataset range from pop stars like Lady Gaga and Fred Again.. to Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Wu-Tang Clan, Bruce Springsteen, and experimental composer Hainbach. You can hop over to the Atlantic’s AI Watchdog site and search through the songs, books, and other media being used to train the world’s AI models yourself.

Various artists have called on AI developers to halt practices that undermine human creativity and devalue the rights of artists. They criticize the training of AI models on unlicensed music, arguing that it infringes upon the rights of artists and floods the market with AI-generated content/slop, severely diluting the earnings for original and future human creators. Unfortunately I see no effective and practical remedy for this. You can battle all you want in the courts but proving that a piece of AI generated music was possible/stolen due to training on your particular song is not easy. Ironically, you may need an AI bot to untangle the complexity involved. The larger issue may be the permenant degrading of humans to create music. And this may only take a generation or two. AI is steam rolling over every aspect of human activity from agriculture to zoology; this is the new era. Something that hits particularly close to me is the “artificial general engineer” that is currently being developed on the Prometheus project. Fasten your seatbelt, this is disruption on steroids

I might have said this before in another AI discussion here but some of the AI allows users to train the AI specifically on your own songs. That eliminates the whole "stealing from others" argument. Of course, the bigger and more diverse your catalog of work is, the more it has available to draw from, to assist you in creating more music that would be free from incumberance. I heard this topic discussed by a library president (IIRC) and TAXI's president on one of the TAXI TV episodes. Either way, doors are starting to crack open in this area.
