Hi All,

Here's something called Fade Those Jeans.

She caught me in the doorway
While the rain combed through her hair
Taxi lights on Houston Street
Were trembling in the air
She had a brown box full of wildflowers
And a head full of Rilke poems
Said she was tired of lovers
Who never stayed at home

The radio played softly
Some sad parade in E
The night hung from the fire escape
Like laundry no one would see
Outside the subway thundered
Like a memory underground
And her eyes held that distance
That Joni always wrote about

The streetlights dim and the rails all shine
Everybody’s running from the same old crime
Trying to keep some spark alive
In time

The drunks all talked religion
The poets spun refrains
Somebody cursed the television
Somebody missed the train
She laughed like tarnished silver
Like a dollar short of rent
I said “Baby all this running”
“Where’s it supposed to end?”

Now the years come down like scarves of rain
Across the Lower East Side
The girls turn into painters
The boys all learn to hide
But I still hear her laughing
Like ice cubes in a drink
“Will you fade those jeans?” she said
Before either of us could think

And the moon hung over Chinatown
Like a worn and borrowed dime
She touched the fray beside my knee
And whispered
I guess in time
In time
In time
In time
