there are 2 styles (floyd.sty and c_travis), either of which would work quite well in the tune i'm doing. What i'd like to do is combine them, maybe like this: have the tune begin with floyd, go for 2 choruses and then switch over to c_travis for 6 bars and then switch back floyd for a chorus. . etc. you get the idea - i want to have my song play these 2 styles in which ever order i choose - sometimes going for several choruses or maybe just a few measures. I've been working with stylemaker for about 2 wks now and haven't figured it out - this is probably a lazy man's way to keep from going in and editing a style internally - but it sure seems like an a simpler way to use several styles( prividing they're compatible) within the same tune to break up the monotony. I'v already gone to styles > make a hybrid style - but it didn't seem like exactly what i'm trying to do. there's got to be a way to do this.
any replies or help app. fivestring have win xp prof and biab ver 12 with 2004 upgrade

As long as both styles are MIDI styles (no RealTracks), you can press F5 to change styles at any bar you wish. Have you tried doing that with your song.

John's solution is the easiest way to go.
If you want to use your hybrid in a lot of songs, look into defining a multistyle. Using a multistyle, the style is defined by using the part markers. In your case you would define Floyd as a/b and Travis as c/d. Changing from one to another is only a matter of setting the appropriate part marker where you want the change.
If you want to try this, it is easy. I recommend making backup copies of your styles before editing.
Edit the style Floyd. In the Misc settings, put C_Travis as the Multistyle. Save your style (preferably to a different name). When you load your song with this style, it will now have a/b (Floyd) and c/d (C_Travis) part markers. Set those where you like.

tks 4 the quick reply - the styles are midi. i went to f5 and played with it some but cant make it do what i want it to do . lets take this senario: I open my song and start it playing with style 1 and i want to have it switch over to style 2 in the 5th bar of the 2nd chorus and then switch back to style 1 in the 5th bar of the 3rd chorus. Whenever i playback my "new" song, i can see the red borders around the bar numbers but when it gets to that measure, the style doesn't change - just keeps on playing the style that the song opened with. 1) how do i tell that the first change is to be in the 5th bar of the 2nd chorus. 2) #beats this bar - not sure about this. it defaults to 0, not sure if i'm supposed to edit this.
would app [so very much] a step by step walk thru.

Leave the beats per bar alone unless you want it changed.
If your song is multiple choruses and not 'unfolded', you have to specify which chorus to change. The default is all choruses. In your case, since you want 2nd chorus different, you have to specify that. At the top of the F5 window is a dropdown box. Select a chorus and make whatever changes you want.
For your song,... - click on the 5th bar and press F5 - Select 2nd chorus from the dropdown - Press the .STY button and choose the one you want - Select 3rd chorus - Press the .STY button and choose...

thanx 4 reply - don't see any way to get a dropdown menu on my f5 screen. When i hit f5, my dialog box is labeled "edit settings for current bar" . at the top left is " #beats this bar" - top right is a large section with 3 buttons labeled: ".sty", " open ", "clear sty". i don't see any button in the f5 dialog box that will give me a dropdown to specify choruses with. As stated earlier in this thread my bb ver is 12 with a 2oo4 upgrade installed over it. Could this be part of the problem ?

john/rachael - app your replies but they've generated a ton of questions (f5screen & creating a multistyle. first - on the f5 screen - any explanation as to why i don't have a dropdown to specify what chorus/bar number i want to play (see my previous reply) ? are you saying that using a miltistyle would be simpler than trying to use the f5 screen. Could it be that the ver. i have is too old to have this dropdown selection feature ? ? second - on creating a multistyle: 1. what do you mean "edit the style Floyd" ? Are you explaining how to do this when you begin by saying " in the misc settings . . ." 2. how do i "put c_Travis as the multistyle" ? 3. how would i define Floyd as a/b and Travis as c/d ? 4. when i go to style > misc settings > there is a "misc style settings" dialog box that opens. (several questions here 1. it gives the style name of C_Travis (p, b, d, ac. g At "b" - add 2nd ac.g). haven't a clue as to what that's all about. 2. what defaults do i need to change ? 3. Substyle Pushes A and B - do i need to make any changes here ? Can i leave volume changes at default.
I know these are a lot of questions - i just started messin' with stylemaker about 2 wks ago. (this thing is a awesome) As far as style maker goes, i probably don't even qualify as a newbie but really do want to learn it. Would ever so much app your patience as well as your help 5string

I wasn't around with 2004 so maybe that is the problem. Before trying to walk you through something that is not possible, how about checking with PG Support about this. I have a feeling these features weren't around back then. Consider upgrading if for no other reason to get these features and at least the RealDrums. The drums are what sold me in 2007.

Fivestring, I recall that the more advanced F5 functions you are looking for did not exist in that version.
BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Slate VSX, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

I don't think multi-styles was available in 2004 either. 2004 was the first version to switch from a 16-bit engine to a 32-bit engine. I could be wrong, but it seems multi-styles showed up around 2008, but please correct me if I'm wrong. That's why you're not seeing the things you are looking for.
However, changing a style at any bar with F5 should work, but you will probably have to unfold the song to achieve your desired results.

thanx guys- looks like it's time to upgrade. Rachael, you seem pretty sold on the drums - what can u tell me about them ? John, by unfold the song, do you mean to make it as 1 long chorus, and then use the f5 screen to insert my styles at a desig bar # ?

Midi drums always sounded too 'perfect', too exact for me. RealDrums are actual recordings of a drummer in a studio. Go here to give a listen. I think they have demos of all of the sets. As for unfolding, that is what John means. Since you don't have the chorus dropdown which allows you to select a chorus, unfolding gets around that. It also gives you more control over other things such as part markers, etc. R

one last issue and then i can prob close this thread - when i upgrade to 2010.5, i'll probably go to the mega-pak pkg. the website says these things come in the mega-pak: 40 real tracks in 10 bands, real drums sets 1-5 and all 77 style sets. 1) 40 real trks in 10 bands - what's the 10 bands all about ? 2) a drum SET or style SET ? how big is a set (would 1 style set contain only 1 style) 3) don't understand about real trks (i've listened to the demo's - they're awesome) what's the diff between a real track and a style. if i had real trks, would i still need different styles. are the real trks just sounds only, with no particular organization to them - much like the midi sounds that comefrom a sound canvas ? 4) what's this" real band" all about ?
As i think about it (after writing all this) these are questions that prob should be addressed by PGM sales staff. if you want to direct me there, that'll be OK too - but i thought i'd go ahead and post them as someone else may have these questions too. I don't mind "doing the homework" and digging for these answers (i've done some already) - if there are some links or places you could refer me too, i'd welcome that help too. the only thing i could come up with on real band is a video on the new features (and that helped some) but i still not sure what it is or how it could help me in my projects. thanks to ALL for the replies gratefully, 5string

Hi, 5string - Hopefully this answers your questions. Quote:
1) 40 real trks in 10 bands - what's the 10 bands all about ?
You will get 40 RealTracks (RT) that are grouped together into a style (or styles) that you can select for your song, essentially creating a band. So they might take a particular bass RT, a piano RT, a guitar RT, and an organ RT, and group them together into a RealTrack style that you can select. This would be the "band". You, of course, are free to replace the instruments (players) they selected with different ones. I think once you get into it, however, you're gonna wish you had bought the ultra-pak.
Quote:
2) a drum SET or style SET ? how big is a set (would 1 style set contain only 1 style)
RealDrums are pre-recorded phrases of live (not MIDI) drums that can be time stretched according to your song (within limits). Each set of RealDrums contain multiple drumming styles. With the MegaPak, you get the first 5 sets of RealDrums (so as not to be confused by the term "drum set"). The 77 styles sets are all the MIDI styles that PGMusic produces. Each set of MIDI styles contain multiple styles, so in the end, I think you end up with a thousand-some-odd styles in total (or some higher number I can't remember right now).
Quote:
3) don't understand about real trks (i've listened to the demo's - they're awesome) what's the diff between a real track and a style. if i had real trks, would i still need different styles. are the real trks just sounds only, with no particular organization to them - much like the midi sounds that comefrom a sound canvas ?
RealTracks are pre-recorded phrases of live musicians playing, so it is audio, not MIDI. PGMusic has created an algorithm that can time stretch (to a point) and pitch shift (to a point) the phrases to replace or enhance your MIDI accompaniment. RealTracks follow chord progressions, not notes, so you can't get RealTracks to play a written melody. But they make one heck of a backing band. There are RealTracks styles, but that is just a grouping of different RealTracks into a "band", so you don't have to select them individually yourself. They're a lot of fun to work with and create some great music. But you do lose the note-level control over your music that you have with MIDI. What's cool also, is that just adding one or two RealTracks to a song can take away the mechanical/electronic/stiff sounds that MIDI can sometimes produce.
Quote:
4) what's this" real band" all about ?
RealBand is a MIDI/Audio sequencer application (DAW) that takes most of PowerTracks Pro (another sequencer/DAW that PGMusic sells) and blends in many of the BIAB features directly. So within RealBand, you can read in a BIAB file and it can generate/regenerate the parts based on the style used; you can use RealTracks and RealDrums; you can record your own instrument or vocal playing. You get 48 tracks to use as you please. It supports DX and VST effects and a bunch of other features.
Remember, PGMusic offers a 30-day money back guarantee if you don't like it, but I think you will.

John is quite correct as usual. In the past I have been buying only certain genre's of real tracks such as jazz, bossa, etc. since I don't do any country stuff. However, I think you will get a better deal if you just buy everything. To me it really depends on how much you use the software also to justify the additional costs.
Another thing with real band.....You can make/use a midi track and record it to audio. You can then merge all the audio tracks to a single .wav file. In other words, you are not just limited to using a single melody and soloist track as you are in BIAB--at least that's what I've been doing. YMMV
Find the Real Band intro video and you will see just a few of it's capabilities. When I first got it, I didn't pay much attention to it, but thanks to the nice folks on this forum, I find I'm using it a lot now.

app your comments stan - i especially agree with you about the knowledgable folks on this forum being willing to help. i've been on and off this forum since about 2001. i'm sad to say i'm one of those that only come back to it when i have a problem but i always find readers who are generous with their knowledge and willing to share.
i'm sure when i get the 2010.5 i'll have a ton of questions and you'll see me back here again.
as always, grateful 5string PS - i can't play jazz but man i sure like to listen to it. some of my all time favorites: stan getz, brubeck, oscar peterson.

@5string. Thank you for getting me thinking that I also need to get the package with more features. I got the megapak last time. I have no regrets, but will go higher this time.

Any fan of Oscar Peterson is a friend of mine. He was a great man. I suspect very strongly that he knew quite a bit about band in a box. There is a connection between PG music and OP, and his note for note transcriptions are marketed by pg music with his 'endorsement'.
I admired him for continuing even when a stroke took away one hand. I saw him play with one hand and I'll never be able to do 1/10 of what he could if I had 10 hands. I remind myself of his perseverance whenever I get down.
