Hi all, I just pulled a Roland SCC-1 Sound Canvas Card out of my old dead 386. I know it's an 8bit card. I'm using an XP PC from 2007, can this card be installed in any newer PCs? Is there a slot that will take this card? I don't want to open up my PC and then blow it up. Wayne,

Do it the other way around. Blow it up, then you don't need to open it up!
I think the round file is the best place for that card. You can get a universal usb type sound card that is plug and play for under 50 bucks I bet. No opening needed. No explosions. And it's compatible with this century.
If you don't find my post amusing I'll try again about 2 a.m. when I can't sleep and the narcotics fog me up...or not.jj
I sent for ten lessons on how to be a wit, but only the first 5 showed up. I'm at least a half wit now.

Unlikely. It''s for an "ISA" slot, seldom found in motherboards past the 386 era. It is a MIDI interface and synth, not a full audio card. It sounded halfway decent, since it was the SC155 module on a card. That was a "GS" synth with many banks of sounds, about like the present GM2 standard.
You could find an old 386 for free and make a useful (if not very modern) synth out of the thing, if you wanted. It doesn't actually need to boot up --. The synth is self-contained, and it's enough just to get some power to its ISA slot to use the thing as an external synth module.
It may actually play OK in your 386 that is "dead", as long as the power supply is not entirely expired.

Sounds very eco-friendly. Like quitting piano lessons and buying a player piano. LOL.

Thank you all.
I always liked the Hardware SoundCanvas and the card sounded great at the time. I guess I'll look for another Hardware Sound Module. I'm not interested in the Ketron. Maybe Edirol Sound Canvas Pro.
Wayne,
P.S. And John, "I sent for ten lessons on how to be a wit, but only the first 5 showed up. I'm at least a half wit now." I'm still laughing.

Speaking of USB type soundcards, such as for a netbook or lappie. Do they handle midi or only audio.
I'd like to find a usb soundcard that will give a decent midi + audio sound for a buddy on a limited budget. Walmart has a creative X-fi external soundcard for under $60.00, but it doesn't indicate if you can route midi thru it.
Any ideas?

I have an old one you should be able to find on ebay or the like. Actually I see one here: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Labs-Blaster-External-System/dp/B000095IMSIt has midi on board and rca's in and out, and spdif. It's plug and play, never needed drivers. I don't use mine anymore, if I lived in the US I'd just send it to you, I don't know what they do about customs. I see used prices of 50 bucks, mine worked great 6 or 7 years. So it does both sound and midi...and in and out. I never tried it on Win 7 but if anyone is curious I can plug it in, I think I know where I stashed it.

Rob, You talk about a decent MIDI sound, so I'm assuming you're not talking a MIDI interface. Windows uses a built in software synth, so you won't find any more cards that actually have a MIDI sound set on them. Even if you use something like the Coyote DXi synth, that'll play out the audio of an USB sound card.
MIDI sounds are generated in the computer and are sent to the audio outputs of a USB soundcard.
On the other hand, if you're looking for something with a MIDI Interface on it, they are available, but a couple of hundred dollars.

I use a roland UA 4FX interface currently which I like a lot, it has no sound card built in so I use coyote, or VSC or my yamaha keyboard sound engine. I'm looking for a desk top unit like maybe a roland SD20 that is external, but through which I can route my friends laptop or netbook to play midi files with with say windows media player or whatever he has onboard currently.
What would I buy to play both midi and audio if my realtek sounds all went out on my computer? External and cheap.
Thanks

One thing Win 7 has issues with, is midi. I can't for the life of me get it to play my Ketron SD2 or my Roland JV1010. The 1010 is mothballed, I should find a local person who wants it. It at least has a switch and preview function on the front, which would have been great on the Ketron. The Ketron works in Band in a Box just fine, it's a standard midi file on the desktop I can't get to play. Some say do this and that to the registry, I loath to get involved with that. So for now Band in a Box plays it fine if there's midi in the song, and my keyboard works playing it on the thru channel, but no joy from my desktop, won't fly.

Toucher, yer mail box is full, overflowing, and the Postal Service says you need to throw the paper in the recycle bin. It's probably election flyers from the Demoncrats or the Publicans. Or is it pachyderms and donkeys. Quite the zoo....
The tee party needs an animal too. I just can't decide which one. Beavers and Moose are out, those are spoken for. So are loons and seals. The latter make great coats. As a tea party is a quiet affair with cucumber sandwiches maybe a church mouse. Do they drink with a pinky in the air? I prefer Gin and Tonic in my teacup along with the tempest.
I have a no charge option for unused gear. It's taking up space I need for bottles of stuff I pump on direct drive. No swallowing. I couldk drink ta-kill-ya that way,

I just found out my wife is 49 plus shipping and handling. Good age that.
I better go now and see if the 'lectric blanket warmed my spot. The days of sleeping with the screen off and window open are gone. I miss the snow on my face, but I can't seem to stay warm. I'm going to contact a Mexican guy I know says I can live in the attic of the garage he rents in Marathon. I ate a taco once. Hard bread with beans. Our beans aren't squished, the bread is soft, and there is maple syrup in them, otherwise it's almost the same stuff. We use pepper for heat, they got those Jalopeeinyo's. Whow they are some warm. If we had those we could stay out in the cold all day.
We need to teach the Mexican's to skate. Then it's on to seal meat tacos and walrus burritos. Mucho Mucho good. When I was in mexico someone wanted to be to play Al Hurt. I'm a paci-fist, so I declined. I think Al must have a problem if they want him hurt, I never met the man, but ....
Ok, off to see if the wife shaved her legs. She used to get all dressed up and was hot. Now she's still hot but it comes in flashes. On for 23 hours and off for 1. I got a different sweater than the one I wanted. That men-o-paws is a waste of money. All those winter flannel nightgowns are taking up space. When we got married she had the silk kind worms made, with fur around the bottom to keep her neck warm. I think I used it to dip for minnows a few years back.
My neighbour started locking his door. One of his kids came home after moving out. He's 22 and living at home. I left at 18. Of course then i didn't have to change the other kids' diapers. I got 4 kids don't live here, I'm thinking about getting locks, the ones I have don't have keys. Or we lost them.
Remember your mail box is stuffed like a 20 pound trout.
