Hi Rob,
Welcome to the forums. If you hold down "control" and "shift" together the mouse pointer then turns into a pencil. Simply click on where you want to place the note. Using the "snap" and "duration" tools, you can also get it to align where you want and to be the length you want.
I've found that sometimes if the answer can't be easily found in Realband help, it's useful to check out BIAB help. Components that are the same in both programs (e.g. Piano Roll view, etc.) usually behave the same in both programs.
