I am really getting fed-up with BIAB by now - BIAB starts but hangs/exits after two error message boxes. First "the system cannot find the file specified etc etc", then the next with "access violation etc ...".
- Read trough the posts, have also tried with AVG disabled: i still have the same problems, BIAB won't boot.
- It started with the last 2010.5 304 update, BIAB has been running before, XP Sp3 on ASUS 6PT SE, intel i7_920, 6 GB memory, Unitor 8 serial version, M-Audio Delta1010, soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS, onboard Realtek chip disabled, ATI SEH5450 HD audio disabled. Normally i used ASIO4all 2.10, unstalled this, same problem. PS it's also the same with ASIO switched off, thus MME, but sometimes it keeps running at least for a whilethen, this after the same error messages on boot. Deleted the Interface file as well.
- Please get your act together; PG music, i've been spending a lot of money on the BIAB software over the years. I am a professional musician using BIAB mainly for leadsheets etc. I simply don't have the time for all this experimenting to find solutions for your newest bugs.- F

fiddler, You don't mention what your operating system is. It sounds like you are using either Windows Vista or 7 and that you have the User Account Control (UAC) activated. It also sounds possible that BIAB and RB might be installed under c:\program files. You can see if UAC is a problem by going to Control Panel >> Users and deactivating it. UAC will stop temporary files writing to your hard drive. It's part of an antivirus strategy. Unfortunately, UAC does not distinguish between good and bad temporary files all that well. I deactivated UAC 18 months when I was having similar issues. Since then, all has worked well with only the odd hiccup. Note: If you don't have Vista or 7 or you have deactivated UAC then there is no point reading the below. I typed the following on the off-chance that it might be useful given that I have no idea what OS you are running. (It might also be a 32-bit/64-bit issue, but I shan't address this in this post.)One thing that I also did was to reinstall the programs off the root directory (c:\bb, c:\realband) and when I ran the install file, I right-clicked on the file and chose the option "Run as Administrator". This helps give the program clearances that are recognized by Windows. The interesting thing with Windows is that even though one logs in with administrator privileges at boot up, these are not automatically transferred to running programs unless specifically indicated. Lastly, it is also possible to give an existing program administrator privileges without reinstalling. (I didn't know that at the time I reinstalled.) This has been mentioned a couple of times in the forums, but I believe that one needs to locate the start-up file (bbw.exe in c:\bb), right-click on it and then set administrator clearance. Hopefully someone in the forums who knows how to do this will chime in and tell you how it's done. In the meantime, here's a bit of information that I found in the PGMusic FAQs about UAC... http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq20.htm#100Hope this helps, Noel

Hi Noel. Thanks for your extensive answer. Somewhere i in my post i mentioned XP SP3, meaning Windows XP (professional) Service pack 3. I also have (and had succesfully) BIAB installed on a Firewire 400 bus, Western Digital MyBook2, external drive. It worked befor that way perfectly. Control panel; UAC, i only have User Accounts there, no UA-Control function. My install are always done as Administrator & the privileges thereoff. I'll check the administrator privilleges on the external drive, Folder options are set to "use simple file sharing"; alas - switching on Network permissions in sharing did not help either .. PS indexing is switched off, as is System restore ...... -F

Hi fiddler, Sorry about that When I read your post, I wrongly interpreted what you said about XP to mean that you had "previously" been running BIAB on XP. It's very strange that you are having issues because most people on these forums who use XP are the ones who have the least problems. Have you scanned your system for "nasties"? The reason I ask is because I use Avast! antivirus (free version) and it's been excellent. However, in the Off-Topic forum, I came across reference to a free program called "Malwarebytes Anti Malware" (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php). I downloaded it and updated it to the latest database. When I ran it, the program found a trojan that had slipped past Avast! Over the years, I've discovered that sometimes these lurking nasties can cause strange behavior. Regards, Noel

>>. "the system cannot find the file specified etc etc"
Sounds like an installation problem, like running from a partial installation.
In any event, the most important part is the "etc etc" part, where it names the file that it cannot find. Haven't heard of anyone else having a problem like this, and lots of people are using on XP SP3 (including myself, to program BB).
Have Fun! Peter Gannon PG Music Inc.

Hi Noel, just downloaded it, and it's running. However for the records i always used Spybot S&D, and Spywareblaster sofar, comodo firewall, and Avast ..... regularly updated, scans performed, ,malwarebytes is for keeps though, it already found 2 "objects infected". But some of these programs also mark the goodguys at times, thanks heuristics protocols & the suspected algorithms they usually scan for ... RESULTS: 2 trojans removed (one a registry entry). Same problem alas. I give up. - F

Sorry to hear all your problems.
You sound like a techy kind of guy. You know that a commerical app like RB, which is running on (well, at least dozens ) of users computers certainly should run on yours. So, personnally, I would never give up. These types of problems are always associated with a system specific issue: Drivers, corrupt files, bad hard drive, registry errors, security settings. You just have to have patience and determination and keep at it. Otherwise the technology wins. Do you have a second computer (most of us have several these days) which you can install it on to verify the program-files are not corrupted?

Have you tried to return to the prior update to see if this is the root cause?

Just a comment here:
Why do you use ASIO4All with the Delta 1010 which has its own ASIO? And running both the Delta and the SB is certainly a potential for Driver confusion. Why do you use both. My M-Audio Card does it all for my system
And finnally, did I read BIAB is installed on an external drive? I believe there at three options to install 1) on interanl drive, 2) on external drive, 3) program files on internal and all else on external. For my home DAW I chose #1 and for my laptop I chose #3. How do you do it?

1. I never have any other software running during an install. Especially anti - virus stuff.
2. I would never let that software remove any files I didn't know the origin of. Band in a Box does not write to registries, and if the target install is the external hard drive, I don't understand how you cannot get a clean install.
Every version ran fine on xp for me, and if Peter Gannon is using Xp for development purposes and has the latest update it has to be something either:
1. Wrong with your computer. 2. Conflicting with other software.
Thus it is necessary to narrow it down from there.

Can you simply unselect the "Use VST/Dxi Synth" in the MIDI/audio Drivers Setup? Opps, but I guess you would have to have BIAB open and running to do that. But you may be onto something here - problem plugins are notorious for problemns like this in many DAWs. i don't see or hear about it much in BIAB since I personnally don't use any (except for ForteDXi).

Hi Jazzmandan; i used Hypersonic for a while, still one of the best sounding plugins, and just now when i (sparcely happens) i get BIAB to run with MME, this is with Use VST/DXi Synth unselected. Same story. - F

Dxi plugins do have to write to the registry. I'd suspect it might be advantageous to delete the registry plugins, you'd probably need to do that with a text editor and CAREFUL backups.
I'd contact pg music and ask for step by step instructions.. The installation of plugins, to my memory, is an independent program and has nothing to do with the band in a box installation.
Also to note:
No end of weirdness can come from usb ports, multiple devices and their constant use. I found out after major grief that I had to reinstall the O/S and only plug in usb stuff to the drive they first got stuck into. I have a slot on each computer for each device, and never cross plug them. I don't know if this got fixed after Xp but it was then I had the problems, too many sound devices, cameras, video cameras, hard drives, it was nuts.
Now, except for band in a box, I'm doing the Ubuntu dance and a happy camper.

Hello Fiddler2007,
In your Band-in-a-Box folder (usually C:\bb) can you find the file DXPluginList.ini and list any DXplugins that do not start with PG?
Can you cut any of those plugins from that list that don't start with PG and add them to dxplugexclude.ini so that it looks like the others in the list.
Try booting up the program after that and see if it makes a difference.
You can make backups of these files by copying them before you make any changes just in case you need to revert back.
Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,
There is a dxplugexclude.ini, but iI cannot find DXPluginList.ini, should there be one? Maybe that's the cause, and you really helped me then .. -F
