For my money, the important stuff only goes on a Seagate. Trying to Windows copy (or even Dos XCOPY /S ) for such a large number of files seems to inevitably end up with a CRC error SOMEWHERE and thus an aborted backup. I suppose you COULD use Windows Backup/Restore, but since everyone with more than a couod of disks should probably have a Partition Manager anyway, this Free Home Version did a partition copy in just a few minutes that tested fine. For the record, I did use the Windows utilities to scan both disks for errors (with the "correct bad sectors") option before proceeding to do a "partition copy." I feel better now having my UltraPlus PAK on a righteous spindle. Fujitsus are nice shipping media, but with drives as cheap as they are now, I have 2011 (and my 5K+tunes) all on one quality drive.

Peter Gannon said the drives they are using now are Toshiba. I've had great luck with all my Toshiba products, and the one bad crash I had was a Seagate. Any hard drive can have bad sectors that the initial format then skips. So, I guess we all have an opinion. Glad it works for you.

Same here. New Seagate died in 3 months. They did replace it though.When you look at the complexity of these electro-mechanical devices it's a miracle they even work. They are all subject to issues.

Am i missing something here? I just plug in a USB drive (or SATA or FIREWIRE 800) and copy the folder over. Band in the box (and all related files) don't have copy protection so you can just copy folders. I've never had an issue. I copy almost daily, folders of 100GB and larger. I have two 2TB backups that are constantly moving stuff around. Seagates are weak drives? The new drives today (Hitachi, seagate, WD, Samsung,Toshiba) are all VERY good and reliable. The 2.5" drives are just as reliable as the 3.5" drives now also I would think. Drives are so well perfected they sell for almost nothing and are very fast (hence PG giving them away with the files) On the other hand.... I just had an Intel 80GB SSD fail on me , something i've never seen recently on a mechanical drive. (The Intel was a Boot drive also, so it's not joke  ) Intel, I would think would be more reliable, but their first batch of SSDs, I have a feeling are junk. (fast but junk) (there... I got it off my chest. Don't I sound like a know-it-all? )

Well, I did not say Seagate drives are weak. I said I had one fail. John said he had one fail. This was merely to comment on the OP's opinion that Seagate drives are better than other choices. They may be, but they can still be bad.
You may draw whatever conclusion you like about Seagate.
About your "feeling" on Intel SSD drives: Right now, this system is running an an Intel 160GB SSD drive. I have not had one BSOD since installing it in April. That's a first for me in decades of building machines.
The only thing I believe one can say for certain is that some drives are bad, some are good, no one knows which are which, and all might fail someday, so be prepared.

All these drives look the same to me. I just keep my fingers crossed. But they have gotten really cheap (cost wise). Got to love it.

Don't overlook the SSDs though. I'm truly impressed with the performance gains and stability of mine.

Yes I have a number of these. I have two Intels and a couple of OZCs. But It will all just get faster!!! BTW. the OCZ Vertex's that I have were fast, but on a whim I upgraded the firmware (not an easy task for these) and the speed increased dramatically. More than double the speed, so that now the SATA 2 bus is maxed out. Got to hand it to those guys, they are on the ball with these. Are we like... off topic?

That's interesting about the firmware upgrade. It would take courage to do it on a boot drive.

My 30GB OCZ boot disk just failed after about a year and a half. I replaced it with a much faster Mushkin 40GB for $100 from Amazon. Some of the early drives had trouble with write cycles. I keep my swap file on a 10K spinning disk to avoid unnecessary writes.
BTW, my drive is definitely a Fujitsu. I have had bad luck with Toshibas, especially Customer Service trying to get an RMA after an immediate failure.

Yup. I heard bad things about Iomega drives, but my 500gb (w/internal power supply) has worked fine so far.....and my fingers are crossed.;)

That Mushkin drive looks smoking. I guess these new Sandforce (or whatever their called) controllers are the 'new and improved' thing. My two OCZs use the Indilinx, and the Intels use 'Intel's' controllers, I guess. I may pick up the Mushkin 60GB for $130 (or less if I can get it), as my SSDs are feeling a bit long in the tooth. P.S, There I go again!!. A thread pirate.

Interestingly enough (at least to some people) when I was at a local Best Buy looking for a new internal SATA hard drive, I looked closely at ALL of the brands and come to find out that they ALL were made in the Philippines anyway. Just the brand names were different. So except for the warranty that each company offers, you are probably getting the same TYPE and MANUFACTURE of the drive no matter which one you pick.
Do you guys typically copy the entire contents of the USB drive onto your local drive and just keep the USB drive as a backup of the original files?

I have a couple of TB spinning in my box, and I reserve a 10K RPM for my REAL important stuff.. BIAB get a place of honor there. Probably makes little difference, but I feel better knowing it is on my fastest non-SSD platters.
I keep a copy on a quality portable to take to gigs, and keep the media on which it was shipped as a backup. Actually, I copy THAT one to an older drive (like the one 2010 came on) just to be REALLY sure.
As you can probably guess,I've lost my share of drives over the past three decades. They are getting better than the old MFM/RLL days (but then again I still have BIAB 1.0 running on an old Compaq 386 portable with a plasma screen)with a Stacker-compressed 10MB RLL drive. I don't use it every day <g>. But it DOES still boot !!
