In RB 2010 I am able to highlight say 8 tracks of various midi drums, and from the menu select Track -> Merge. Dialog box would ask which track to merge to, and then all midi drum sounds would merge to that track as audio. In RB 2011, same operation only gives me a merged track of midi data. Am I missing a checkbox somewhere?

Yes. It was changed as some people didn't want the midi merged as audio. They wanted it merged as midi.

Once merged, you can right-click and autoconvert to audio.
This way leaves both options open.

I was one of them. The reason is if it's a complex drum track from a hot latin percussion type song for example I might want to separate the latin percussion parts from the regular trap set parts and use my Jamstix for that and another synth for the percussion. Once that's done I will remerge the tracks to create only 2 drum tracks. One for the kit and one for the percussion. At that point I still want it in midi because I have a bunch of different midi synths. When I'm ready for a final mix I'll convert those to audio.
Holy crap! I just had a bad Halloween moment. A big ass spider just came down from the ceiling right in front of the monitor while I was typing this. That woke me up.

That's when I usually MERGE the spider with the nearest flat surface.

Oh ok. I wasn't aware of the right-click to autoconvert to audio. I'm glad to know the option is still there. Thanks for pointing that out.

When it comes to percussion I work in a similar way, so I can see the usefulness for both options. In the previous version, although I liked the merge to audio option, I was a little puzzled that you could merge multiple midi tracks to audio but not to midi.

Nope; I'm pretty sure that the few spiders that get "merged" inside my house do not significantly affect the population of the ones that iive in the woods outside my house. I grab a newspaper and the "merge" works exactly as expected. The unwanted artifacts then go right into the recycle bin.

I've had too many spider bites, and when I found the brown recluse that time, I don't take any chances.

Yeah, he's celebrating the holidays in spidey heaven. Where I live near the ocean I've never seen a black widow or recluse but my friend who lives up in the mountains near Palm Springs sees them all the time. I was at his place for a BBQ and when I lifted the lid off the cooker a nice fat black widow was sitting right there under the grill. Black widows may not kill you but they can really mess you up including spending some time in the ER. She added to the flavor of the steaks. He was bitten by a recluse a few years ago and it was no joke either. His finger swelled up, he had some pain and for weeks he had a small weeping hole in his finger that took way too long to heal up. There's nasty critters all over the place. We've also got those small but potent Pacific Rattlers and you guys back east have those huge Eastern Diamondbacks. I sure wouldn't want to run into one of those.

Here I go again, way off topic. Oh well I think we've answered the original question anyway.

Warning: rattlesnake violence below, do not proceed if squeemish ..

Ran into a few Eastern diamondbacks; delicious when barbequed.
Never killed one that wasn't already rattlin' at me. Never shot one either; they were close enough that I had to hit 'em. That's when I'd get nervous. Lived on an island in Texas for a while that semed to have a cycle, some years there were lots of 'em. A couple times happened when I was taking groups of kids on nature walks. Kids panicing with a rattlesnake nearby is not a good thing. Other times they'd pop out of lumber piles. Wasted three of them before I tried the barbeque..

There, now I grossed everyone out more than the squished spiders.

Well, I've not had a problem with an Eastern Diamondback, but it was unsettling to find the copperhead in my garage just chillin' between the two cars about a month ago.

In the dead of winter, in a northern lumber camp, I reached in the big box of Chiquita bananas. Never felt a thing. Getting ready to go on the bus to be foreman for wood cutting. Can't get my glove on. Arm starts to swell. Ambulance 60 miles to the hospital.

New doctor in Smooth Rock Falls. East Indian. He says in a thick accent. "This shall be veddy odd. Ah yes, puncture wounds...", he's holding a loupe. " But you've not been to a banana plantation my man".

I say, "well I did get 2 bananas." They called the camp on the radio phone, sure enough, big spider in the box. Doc treated me with an IV and 2 bags of stuff and I was back to work after lunch.

My doc told me he would never have figured it out, but probably would have given me an antihistamine and antibiotic and steroid, but the other doc told him the antibiotic would be useless.

The spiders in the house I leave, but the wife deals with them...
The best is my son's cat, plays with them until they are deceased. Hilarious. But it can take an hour. Almost as much fun as watching a warbler eat each leg off a daddy long-legs.
