While it is always enjoyable too see someone enjoying their work especially musicians, I too can't help but want to be part of the fun. Besides rarely never have I sat in with a group that I did not learn something that would help me with my playing down the road.
Case in point back to many years ago when as a band we were gigging in New Orleans (when live music was the norm in every bar/lounge on just about every corner) along with my fellow band members we could not pack up quick enough from our gig to get to some of the after hour gigs where we would sit in or just swap out seats with the cats playing their gig. In fact many of the after hour players would come to our gig, sit in and warm up a tune or two before they went to theirs. Those were the days my friend as I think back now I knew at leat 25 - 35 musicians playing around the city on any given night . . . now I can count them on one hand playing only weekend gigs.
On that same note how many times have you tried to explain to a spouse or friend why after playing your gig you would go to someone else's gig to play more music, especially for free. They just don't get it, that's what musicians do . . . maybe when it comes to music we are adrenaline junkies.

Yup, me too. And in deference to Bob, when I am content to just listen, mostly I prefer to listen to instrumentalists...
That said, when I'm on a gig, I would rather have a good vocalist fronting the band as they bring an extra dimension to the performance. Particularly if they can interact well with the crowd. (There have been some I wouldn't feed..!)

To me the biggest mistake any one can make while assembling a live show is to not first map out who your band is going to be.Think like a Real Band how many players & what do they play. keep it consistent just like a RealBand. This is my band:
1. Bass=Me
2. Vocals=Me
3. Drummer= Always some form of Nashville.Drummer only has one kit
4. Acoustic guitar=varied
5. Keys= piano, organ, strings. Just remember he only has 2 hands
6. Elect. Guitar=doubles on Sax. Stop the Elect. Rhythm when soloing.
7. Steel Player= doubles on Elect. Guitar.
When someone asks me how I do what I do I tell them" these are all tracks that I've arranged & produced using live musicians that I have paid to play.If you listen you'll see that the band has a consistent sound of it's own"

thanks for posting your thoughts. My own opinion on this varies somewhat. After years of not going out to hear live music, I started again recently. My biggest complaint with every single group I've listened to so far is that after about the third song I feel like I've heard everything the band can do. All the songs start to sound alike to me. I have heard others voice the same complaint...
Sometimes it gets boring because the genre never changes, sometimes because the musicians use the same licks over and over, sometimes because the tone or instruments or the effects never change. But so far it has always gotten boring VERY quickly.
I understand that you are shooting for a realistic sound, one that would be consistent with what a full band would generate. But the technology exists for you to EXCEED what the average band could do! Just an idea to plug into your thinking as you move forward.
Or not. As always, your mileage may vary. My own planning to get back onstage in 2011 has been geared toward achieving a highly varied sound rather than a highly homogenized one.

I can understand your thoughts on this however I'd like to comment. The reason you are probably bored are two fold:
1.You're better at what you do then you let on
2.They aren't as good as they think
Now granted there are 2 schools of thought when doing covers:
1.Sound like the record
2.Don't sound like the record
Not very dramatic but I bet the camp is split on this.

I'll add a 3rd probability: If they are the usual "partial rhythm section with singer" that seems to be called a band these days then they probably only play in 2 or maybe 3 keys 'cos E and A are "easier" on a guitar. They'll only know about 5 chords which will probably not even include 7th's let alone any colour tones above that... Playing in one key all the time gets old very fast. You may not be noticing this consciously, but you're still noticing it. IMHO such people aren't really *musicians, they're musical wannabe's. /rant  * OK, maybe that's a bit harsh, but I've seen enough of it to know that a lot of groups like I've described are out there and they do not seem to develop any further.

this is what I like about the forum.
By the time performers are making artistic judgment calls about how they want to present their music, it means the fundamentals are a done deal. This software gives us tools to pursue the final product in a bunch of different ways. I like having that flexibility.
We can go for the "wall of sound" or we can simulate the physical limitations of a very specific virtual band. We can be synthetic or acoustic. Imitators or originators. There's no right or wrong way, just a lot of possible ways.
I like hearing how different people navigate the possibilities.

Well, my question would be, how would one set up BIAB so that the tunes can be regenerated, with a possibly RealTracks solo, and a decent ending every time without having to mouse through the menus for every tune? Can the tunes be set up to play with a customized intro, a customized ending, and certain choruses with a generated, say, sax solo that comes off as an improvised piece? Is there any way to make BIAB repeat a chorus on the fly, or tag an ending on the fly without disrupting the solo artist's performance? In fact, is it possible to play along with BIAB on a jazz tune, playing the head, a solo, and then use a keystroke to jump to the generated solo, and then finish the tune with a decent ending?

Look up the conductor feature. It's an icon with a guy waving a baton, which of course, being somewhat illiterate when it comes to musicology, I have learned that a conductor is certainly not a musician , unless of course his one arm is broken and he can't play bluegrass. Despite those limitations, and the aforementioned generalization (which probably has something to do with being promoted within the military establishment), the arrival of a conductor at your computer inspired gig will allow you to repeat section and change the order on thtioe fly. If you really get fancy you can get a foot controller like the one Behringer sells and program the buttons to do the keystrokes.

I remember a similar topic cropping up over 30 years ago at accordion clubs in Scotland.
Round about that time electronic accordions were starting to make their mark as venues were cutting their costs for entertainment. For those of us who decided to make a living out of playing we HAD to adapt and beef up our sound or we were left behind.
I had one of those cordovox like accordions with superb bass and rhythm units built in. In 1984 I bought one of the first accordions with built in midi in my area. It caused quite a stir and opened up new horizons. I teamed up with a drummer a few years later and he had a technics KN5000 keyboard. I had that midid up to my accordion. Well, the sound we had built up was incredible for that time. We had our own library of tunes built up and saved on a standard floppy disk which we built up using cakewalk and an atari computer.
If I was on the circuit today, I would certainly use band in a box on a laptop. Sometimes live bands are asked for especially in accordion clubs and Scottish dancemusic events.
