Hi, all.

Below is a link to an instrumental version of an original entitled "Should A Gentleman Offer?"

Entire rhythm track is from BIAB. Since I can't play worth a darn, all overdubs were sequenced in PTW. Solo in middle is wholly BIAB genereated. The only thing that didn't come from PGMusic products was four instances of a downloaded tambourine wave file.

No vocals yet because I can't sing the lead after the key change--no matter how I try. Happily, the song stands up well as a feel-good instrumental.

However, I'm posting it here primarily because I NEED a referral to any male session singers you know of in the Houston, TX metro area. I can all the backing vocals, but I really need a dynamic lead to finish this demo. Michael Buble's newest pop releases are a good measure of what the lead should be able to do, but I can produce any male tenor with some confidence and attitude.

But, without a tip from you here at the forum, I've got to start beating the bushes -- 'cause I just cannot pull this vocal off myself this time :0)

Thanks,

Byron

Hi Byron,

I really like the groove and the backing that you've assembled. A high level of musical expertise is evident. Kudos to you!

As I was listening, I found myself thinking, "I wonder how this would sound with an instrumental version of the vocal melody playing along with it?" Have you thought about generating a midi version of the melody and rendering it in with this audio file? There are many terrific electronic sounds out there that would really suit the texture of the song. Have a listen to some of MarioD's works and you'll hear what I mean.

Regards,
Noel

Why not adjust the song to match your vocal range, rather than fight with the song?

If you really want to stay in that key, you could create two vocal tracks. The first track would be you singing in the "high" key. Then create another track, this time singing to the same song, but transposed down to where you can reach the more difficult notes. (You'll want to stay as close to the original key as possible). Pitch shift that track back up to the "high" key.

You can then create the final vocal take by combining the two. Assuming that there are only a few places where you need to use the transposed version, you can probably come up with something pretty seamless.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks for the tip, Noel, and I'll have a listen to MarioD. Never thought of this, and it would also be helpful for getting my lead vocal idea across to another singer.

I pitched it down once early in production; the instrument sounds changed (bass guitar got scary low) and I didn't dare try any more. Transposing upwards seemed too drastic. But I didn't think of doing it your way. I'll give what you suggest a try. Thanks.

It also depends on the software that you're using. If RealTracks gives you the result you want, excellent! I use elatique in Reaper, mostly because I'm more used to the interface. But there are more options available, including a Soloist version that's optimized for monophonic material.

Going down in pitch tends to introduce more noticeable artifacts, but going up tends to be safer - even with lower quality algorithms. One song I'd recorded of my choir needed something more on the last verse. I ended up pitching it up a full step, and was surprised how well it turned out.

Like Noel I really like that backing tracks you have here. This is a very good start.

I am a little confused about your transposition problems. Have you tried to transpose the song in BiaB then regenerate the RT parts? Or are you trying to transpose the wavs? Transposing wavs always leaves artifacts in your recordings. I would transpose in BiaB and then regenerate. You may not get exactly what you have here but I’ll bet you’ll discover something that you’ll like.

Rule number one for a singer is to never sing a song that is not in your range. If you can’t sing it then either pass it on to someone else or transpose.

Good luck

I agree with Mario.
Great start and if you can't (or don't want to) do the vocal
why not just post the words and let some of the versatile
vocalists on this forum take a stab at it!

Good luck!
