Hi Paul,

What installation option did you choose when you installed the programs?

Hi everyone

I have an update to this post now. Kent at the online help desk sorted it out for me. If anyone else has this problem try update your sound card drivers. In my case it was the Nvidea nforce old driver clashing and crashing real band . Hope this helps some one .

Regards

Paul

I'm having the same problem... I'm using a Creative X-Fi/Notebook sound-card on an HP dv7-1285dx machine, and the drivers ARE the latest Win7/64-bit drivers. I'm also trying to use a Lexicon/Omega USB interface to add overdubs, (but I'm not getting as far as that step).

I just applied the new 313 BiaB patch to BiaB 2011, and the Build-3 update to the RealBand 2011. As soon as I start up RealBand, I'm okay. As soon as I open and load a BiaB track, it goes through a step of "Generating instructions" to 100%... As soon as it reaches 100% on that step, it locks up and the Program is "not responding" in the Task Manager and I have to kill the process.

At this point I can't use it for anything...

Are you trying to use ASIO in both programs at the same time?
Are you using ASIO in both programs but one is shut down?Sometimes they don't release. Try setting BIAB to MME and see what happens if you are even using ASIO.

Other things to try in BiaB-

uncheck the 'fast generation' option
uncheck the 'use +/-' files option.
and
Disable the Lexicon in BiaB. I hate saying that, but I remember reading of many problems with that particular device. Deselect it as the audio input device and try generating as a test. If it is the cause maybe someone here can help get it set up correctly.

As John stated-
If you are using ASIO, which I think s required with the Lexicon, you shouldn't have two music apps open at once. ASIO is designed to be run one program at a time.

<grrrr> One of those things that I couldn't let-go until 1am...

Here's where I'm at now. I went into the thread "Unbelievable: Quickstart Tutorial", (and I truly thank Funkifized for expressing much of the same frustration that I've had with RealBand for the last 5-6 years.) And I thank those that suggested step-by-step ways to try to troubleshoot the problem. I think a lot of the problem had to do with ASIO and switching to the MME drivers. (For the record, I haven't actually selected or attempted to use the drivers for the Lexicon/Omega yet. I'll save that particular form of self-abuse for another day.)

At this point, I've discovered that I could use the DAW mode to transfer tracks from BiaB to RB... This is a workaround, because the file that I've been trying to use for my first RB project still crashes the RB process. (I've checked for other open dialogue boxes, other open apps, and have closed everything that isn't RB, and the problem still occurs.) I don't know if it matters, but the .SGU track I'm trying to open has both RealTracks and MIDI tracks in it. (I would be glad to send it if someone else wants to see if they get the same result.)

The second thing I notice is that when I attempt to use the DAW function to transfer the tracks one-at-a-time all the RealTracks come over just fine, and are in-sync with each other. When I do it with the MIDI tracks, (Rhodes piano and the Strings tracks), they come over, but they're out-of-sync. They both have about an extra second of time at the front that throws them off. I don't know how to edit out the extra time to sync them up, but I find it odd that they're out-of-sync in the first place.

So, I found a workaround for that. I exported the two tracks as separate WAV files, and then imported the WAV files into RB in separate tracks. (This is supposed to be "easier"?--"more efficient"?) So, now I finally have an RB file with each of the instruments on separate tracks. (It sure would have been easier if I could have just opened the .SGU file from RB and imported it...)

So, if someone has suggestions on how to sync up the MIDI tracks with the RealTracks tracks, I'd appreciate it...Or better yet, how to get RB to open a BiaB track in the first place.

Today, I'm going to play around with the Lexicon/Omega, and see if I can figure out how to use it to lay in the guitar-overdubs. (This may be more "interesting" than it sounds because I plan to make the first overlays a stereo track coming out of my Roland GR-33 Synth, and the stereo-output of my Line-6/PodXT....)

Thanks for the help so far...

But I would like to add to Funkifized's general impressions... RB may be "intuitively obvious" to some. I've been in the computer field since about 1975, and for about 20 years I was a software developer; and for about 4 years, 1998-2002, I was a "human factors engineer" for Lucent evaluating whether our telephony-control software was "human-friendly" or not. I've been whacking on PC's/laptops for about 25 years, and while I consider myself a "semi-expert" on BiaB (since about Version "12", around 2005), I keep pulling up RB about every 6 months to play with it...Then after a couple of hours I get frustrated and just shut it down. The "help files" are difficult to use; (who creates a help file nowadays that doesn't allow you to use the up-down roller knob on the mouse? or use Ctrl-F to FIND phrases in it all the way through the file?) I've watched the video tutorials, and while they point out some "features", they are hardly a "how-to" that one can use to LEARN the program.

Just my general observations... I'm going to try to stay with it this time and see if I can get a handle on it...(After 6 years, I figure it's time.) But editing and moving things around and "tweaking" must sure be easier for some than others.

Have you tried opening other BiaB files in RB to see if it indeed is the file? If it still crashes with a different file, that's probably not the issue.

Are you running RB from C: drive or external?

Like I've said many times, I am not a BiaB expert, but for drag/drop from BiaB to RB I think there is a combo button to use, if I remember correctly. Or the latency could be in the MIDI device selected, that would be one thing to check. But you should be able to just open it in RB. Let's shoot for figuring out why that part doesn't work first.

I am wondering if your realtracks list in RB has been rebuilt yet since the install, so it knows about the same realtracks list that BiaB does (?) A missing track may cause this issue. Try opening the realtracks window before doing anything else and see if it asks to rebuild, or you have a lot of tracks not categorized yet (noted as 'other realtracks' I think) You can right-click a blank track and select 'generate realtrack' to open the window.

If you have another program open, try closing the others when RB seems to stall, make sure a pop-up isn't hiding somewhere. I have had this happen with IE open. It can be very frustrating. The pop-up window disappeared, and I had to close all other windows, then minimize RB and then full screen it and there was the realtracks window .. or maybe it was the styles window.. one of the pop-ups.

Program not responding message is often used when the computer is waiting for you to do something, but you don't see the window to do it in. You probably already know that though with your experience.

Well first answer is RB hasn't been around for 6 years. That doesn't matter though as it probably feels like 6 years if you're having troubles.
Send me a PM & I'll give you my email address to send the file to. I'll check it out.
Just for the record I have over 200 songs that were done in BIAB and then just opened in RB for completion. I use these 200 + songs to play live and they never fail me. I set up about 15 songs per set X 4 sets. Hit play and away we go. Best Band I've ever had. The point is something is wrong with:
1. Your computer setup
2. your songs
3. Or the way you're trying to do things.
I will confess that RB/BIAB are not perfect. They do not have a large high paid staff to trouble shoot every little issue nor to make it 100% humanly friendly. I would not want that to happen.

BTW I don't D&D from BIAB > RB cause I can open the files but I did try it and here it works fine. Combination of MIDI & RTs. I do set up the D&D options so that once I drag to RB they end up as all Audio tracks.
Your trouble with D&D may be how you're doing it. To D&D the whole song DRAG the "COMBO" over to RB & drop it on the "DROP" square at the top of the instrument list in tracks view.No need to drag one at a time.

Hey, thanks for the quick response...

I jumped back on to put in an update... I have been using my HP with a docking-station that has USB ports on it, and the Lexicon/Omega was plugged into one of the USB ports on it, (even though I was not configuring any of the drivers in it for anything.) I just unplugged the machine from the docking station and moved it into another room so I could work on some things while watching my "Sunday Morning talking-heads news-shows." Just for grins I tried opening up the same BiaB file AND THIS TIME it didn't lock up...and everything, including the MIDI tracks, came in in-sync!!!

So, whatever it was, just having the Lexicon plugged into an active USB port was interfering with something. The question now, of course, is whether now that I have all of the imported tracks working, and the file safely saved, I can use the Lexicon as the interface to bring in my guitar overdubs!

Thanks for being patient with me... My frustration is showing... ;-)

(For the record, I did try using the drag-and-drop interface and dragging the "combo" option over, and all it did was import an entire mix of ALL the instruments into one track. It didn't break them out into separate tracks. I also tried it again after disconnecting from the docking station, and it did the same thing; so, it wasn't something caused by the Lexicon.)

Thanks guys...

Yes, if the file is saved you can go ahead and try to record on it. If you want to be safe, open it and save it right away as a different name..
Also, RB makes a backup of the file everytime you save and you can use 'File- Open backup' to open a previous version

Thanks for updating us on the port solution. When recording, save future headaches by having the Lexicon directly plugged into a port that is not being shared with anything else. Try not to even use the USB jack right next to it, as often these are shared also.

If D/D causes the MIDI to lag, I would suspect you are using two different MIDI devices in BiaB and RB. Maybe only one program has the DXi synth enabled, or one is using MIDImapper instead of a direct soundcard/synth ..

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
