I'm thinking of a MIDI guitar set up that would include the following components. Would appreciate any comments from folks with MIDI guitar experience. Thanks. Here's the set-up:

- Godin Multiac Nylon SA guitar - this guitar has both a 13-pin MIDI out and 1/4" output to an amplifier.
- Roland GI-20 guitar MIDI interface - to attach to the Multiac 13-pin MIDI out, needs a sound module.
- Ketron SD-2 or SD-4 sound module - I am using an SD-2 now, and I really like it.

Any suggestions?

I have a friend that uses the exact setup you have except the guitar. He plays solo jazz 3 nights a week with BIAB. By using the through channel he's able to use the harmony stuff like Shearing etc. to the SD2. Uses a Bose L1 system for sound.

I use a Godin XTSA through a Roland GI 20, which drives 3 digital synths, and also inputs directly to my computer Midi interface for Midi recording using Cubase or RealBand or Musicator. IF you plug your GI20 'midi out' into the SD2 'midi in', and plug the SD2 'midi thru' into your computer midi in, you will be able to record (midi, not audio) using your computer software. You can hear what you're playing by plugging the SD2 audio out into an amp (or your computer audio in). Keep in mind that what your computer records in midi format contains no audio information - only midi 'bits and bytes'. So - if you want to play back from your computer and hear what you created, then you'll have to plug your computer midi out into the midi in of your SD2, since that's where all the audio comes from.

Alternatively, if you want a) to avoid messing with cables, and b) to be able to 'play along' with what you have recorded, then you need to feed your SD2 from both the computer AND your GI20 AT THE SAME TIME - done with a 'midi merger' (two inputs, one output) - Midi Solutions Merger is a $50 anser to that problem. One limitation you'll face in 'pley along' though is that you only have one active voice at a time on the SD2, so what is coming from the recording and what is coming at the same time live from you GI20 have to use the same voice.

I hope I was able to offer some help here - I wasn't entirely sure I understood exactly from your post what you were trying to accomplish.

Cheers...
WD

btw: the 13 pins connection from the Godin to the GI20 is not a Midi interface (midi is a 5 pin DIN) - the 13 pin is specific to Roland GK.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
