I need some help! My internet connection ONLY opens PG Music's site, but won't open any other site! I've rebooted the modem, computer, everything- no luck. I've never seen this before. Can anyone help?

Bob

Wow. I have not heard of this. I would have said to delete your browser and download it again (unless it's Edge) but if you can't get to other sites, you're stuck. Sorry.

I've never had this happen before. Do you think reinstalling the browser (Chrome) will help? Thanks.

If you kept the setup file, sure, try it. You might lose bookmarks etc.
But first, did you try a different browser?

But you clearly have internet access, or we could not have this conversation.
Did you ever change your DNS server?

Try clearing your history in Chrome for the last 24 hours (or whenever it started).
Firefox got weird on me once like that. I'd also consider doing a scan to make sure nothing snuck in on ya. Can you ping other sites?
Open Command Prompt and type ping google.com
That may narrow it down to only a TCP (http) issue.
You may be limited to one site, but at least it's this one!

[quote=chulaivet1966][quote=90 dB]Tried that. No joy. This is the strangest thing I've ever seen! ONLY this site opens. Pulling my hair out. Hmmmm.... Even though you have 'rebooted' the modem have you actually unplugged the modem for a few minutes? Just a thought. When you tried 'restore'....did the computer actually go to a previous 'restore point' date or did 'restore' not seem to respond? Have to tried defragging or running 'check disk'? Obviously, I'm shooting from the hip and trying to assess. If I have any epiphany on this enigma I'll chime in again....I need to think about this one. Back to it......

Yup.

It didn't have any Restore Points at all. I can't understand that either. Then I decided to reverse the restore. No luck.
Have to tried defragging or running 'check disk'?
Defragging now.
How do I "check disc"?

Bob

I may be wrong here but it sounds like one of two things to me. One your hard drive is failing or more likely you picked up a bad virus. Run CHKDSK trough Command Prompt 1. Open an elevated Command Prompt (Press the Windows + X button at the same time, then choose Command Prompt (Admin)) 2. Type the following command, and replace the X with the drive letter you wish to scan: “CHKDSK X:”, we suggest you use “CHKDSK X: /F”, only then it can correct errors. 3. Hit the enter key, Command Prompt will now start CHKDSK. To check for viruses do the Security Tango: http://securitytango.com/Nick is from Rochester NY and on his weekly radio help show says this is still the best method to rid yourself of those bad things. Good luck and I hope this helps.
Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up. Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

How do I "check disc"? Regards,Bob It just occurred to me....if you're on a Mac I may be totally talking out of school. If you ARE on Windows: In Windows Explorer - Right click on "C" drive Select 'tools' from the tab selections The first selection is "Error checking" When you click it the prompt will state 'check disk will begin after next reboot. NOTE: this is too check for disk drive errors only. One more thing I'd check is my Windows "programs" I'd make sure another program didn't get surreptitiously installed on your system unbeknownst to you. One MORE thing....maybe see if there are available critical 'windows updates' and run them. I'm not sure I'm helping you much.....but, here I am. (I see Mario beat me to it....Hey Mario :))

I don’t think any of these physical repair-the-computer suggestions are going to help.
You mentioned Malwarebytes. Is it possible you whitelisted this site but it’s blocking all others? Check the settings.

Bob, Here are links to Mozilla Firefox offline installations (32 bit and 64 bit). I have the full install files in my Dropbox. Firefox 32 bitFirefox 64 bitIt's worth trying to see if you can download the appropriate one for you and install it. It might be that your browser has been hijacked and installing another web browser could give you internet access. If you are successful in downloading and installing, don't import anything from Chrome at this stage (in case something unfriendly is lurking there). If you can't download them using Chrome, send me a private message and I'll open a shared folder in Dropbox and I'll see if I can deliver them that way. Also, have you tried starting your Windows in Safe Mode? To do this, press F8 repeatedly while the computer is booting up. Safe Mode (with network support) might give you access and allow you to solve the problem. Hope this helps, Noel

I think rharv is onto it - it has something to do with your browser, or AV or MALEWAREBYTS (yes, I read has disappeared - I would suspect whatever caused MWB's to go bye bye may also have blocked/blacklisted all URLs or changed Chrome polices , something along those lines like a "bad actor" ad blocker, etc. )
BTW is this Windows 10 (if yes home or pro?) and have you seen same thing with Win 10 Edge (agin if ti si win 10 or IE if on Win 8 or 7) ???
In any case good luck Larry

In any case good luck Larry Hey Larry. It's Win7 Home edition. Neither IE or Firefox works either. I'm hoping it's the modem. What do you think? I defragged and scanned- nothing comes back dirty. Regards, Bob

When it opens PG music website are you able to click on links on it and see other threads and stuff?
I think I have had the experience in the past where a web page opens but nevertheless the internet is not working, the page that opens must be stored in cache or something like that.
SO make sure you are are actually connecting to internet ok.
Try a different modem and cable.

More spit balling
Could be DNS cache (so flush it) do try flush your DNS cache. 1. Hold down the Windows key and press R. 2. Type cmd and press Enter run as administrator. 3. In the command prompt, type “ipconfig /flushdns” without quotes and press enter Enter.
Or TCP stack may be corrupted so
1. Hold down the Windows key and press R. 2. Type cmd and press Enter run as admistratorr. 3. The at prompt type “netsh reset winsock” (without the quotes) and press Enter
Maybe simple local network issue
1. Hold down the Windows key and press R. 2. Type cmd and press Enter run as admistratorr. 3. The at prompt type “ipconfig /release” enter then “ipconfig /renew” enter (all without the quotes again ) and press Enter
next Try this command to ping Google’s DNS servers to see if you can get online:
as before from cmd prompt “ping 8.8.8.8”
This will send four packets to Google. If they fail to send, you’ll be told what the problem was.
Next type this line to trace the route between your computer and Google’s DNS servers: tracert 8.8.8.8
The above command gives you a step-by-step breakdown of the path that the information takes to reach the destination you specify. Watch it, and if it fails, check to see where the problem occurs. If an error pops up early in the route, the issue is likely with your local network.
or DSN server (i.e., your ISP may be mucked up)
again you've cold restarted EVERYTHING ?? Larry

no on the restart for those actions and what Sinbad said - that will eliminate the PC, then also be nice if you could bypass modem, from within your house connection, and make sure it was NOT you local ISP. this does not sound like a modem issue (more like PC config) but I've been wrong about ten times, just since I woke up, just ask my wife again good luck Larry

Hi Bob,
You say Malwarebytes has gone from the start menu, but have you checked to see if it has disappeared from the Program Files folder. If it still exists in there, you should be able to re-start it and run a scan.
It could be that a virus has just turned it off, but not disabled it. It has built-in protection against that.
ROG.

I was thinking that too ROG. Seemed a little fishy on the Malwarebytes issue like something a virus would do.

Hope he gets it sorted.
Nothing as frustrating as trying to pin down what is causing a problem.
I have spent about 10 hours trying to troublshoot what was causing my Cubase to freeze when I did a re-scan of plugins, and then wouldn't launch again right.
Turned out it was Comodo firewall, so once I unistalled it, all well and good.
But up to 10 hours, computers are so frustrating at times.
Maybe if Bob hasn't sorted it yet and still troubleshooting, have a look at the firewall.

Definitely sounds like a virus. If it was me I think at this point I would take it to a good tech and get them to fix it, especially if you have important stuff on it such as music files. Pretty hard to do much at your end if you can't access the internet (except for this site?! How strange is that?)
Thing that bothers me is that whatever happened also disabled your malwarebytes, which is also the virus checker I use.

Can you you “tether” your phone as a hot spot to your PC? That would allow you to definitively determine that the issue is your PC. It’s not inconceivable that your net provider is the issue. FWIW

Since it is happening on more than one computer, you should get your internet provider involved. Call them and explain what is happening - and demand that they come fix it. They have people...

I agree with Floyd. If they determine that it is a virus then run the security tango that I highlighted in a previous message.
If your computers are networked together then if you get a virus in one it could infect all on the network.
Good luck.

Since it is happening on more than one computer, you should get your internet provider involved. Call them and explain what is happening - and demand that they come fix it. They have people... ATT says it's a regional outage, should be fixed some time today. I'm not hopeful.

Is that it? ATT is your internet service provider, and it was down a week in such a way that you could access one website only? That just sounds wrong.

It sounds like they were hacked bad, and only the active links survived the attack so that one site was accessable. Really weird.

Can you you “tether” your phone as a hot spot to your PC? That would allow you to definitively determine that the issue is your PC. It’s not inconceivable that your net provider is the issue. FWIW
Bud I don't have a Smartphone. Just a pay-as-you go flip phone from Tracfone. I really don't know what the problem was, after being told it would be up in a day. I really hate computer problems. Regards, Bob

Thank God it's not a virus! I think it was a dodgy modem- I've had to replace two other ones of this model. Thank you for taking the time to help. Regards, Bob

Seems either a re-installation of windows or a backup of your boot partition is the next step. What in such cases at times also helped me out is using Tweaking.com 's Windows AIO Repair. (there's a portable version available). Run that in safe mode (you can choose to do that from the main menu). Also check all basics like SFC (via Windows Repair), and via a command sript, (running as administrator) DISM maybe too, searching for window's corrupted files. See: command scripts . - F

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
