This is a track that I revisited a few times, and I've tried to work in a melody but I've come to enjoy it as is, so I wanted to toss it out there and see what you think. I would really appreciate any tips on the mixing - that's where I have difficulty. And if you think there's a way to add a melody track, I'm all ears.

It's called in a Monk dream because I tried to use some inspiration from Thelonius Monk in the chord choices - they are a bit unusual, but the way BIAB worked with them was pretty neat.

Wonderful. I keep intending to hear more Thelonius Monk, somehow I never make it. Anyway ... beautiful chord choices! I'm so envious, at times, of those people that can handle harmony like you do ... it's like driving a smooth Ferrari or something (not that I've driven one either) ... or like playing a stunningly written piece of music on stage and appreciating every nuance and corner. My clumsy metaphors apart ... brilliant, brilliant job. It flows so easy from chord to chord, there's never a bump in the road, just the smoothest of rides. Love it - well done.

P.S. whether you add a melody track or not is up to you, of course - but I thought that it works perfectly well just like this, too :-) And I'm the wrong guy to ask on mixing - sounded perfectly fine to my ears - so I'll let others comment on that :-) Again, really really well done.

@Musician17 - I really appreciate the comments. I'm a big fan of your creations, so it means a lot. This one took a while and a lot of reworks - I admire your ability to consistently produce excellent tracks.

Wow, thank you - didn't expect such kind words. It's *always* nice to hear words of appreciation - many of us musicians, as you know, are a pretty insecure bunch, especially when it comes to our creations, so thank you - your kindness is appreciated more than you may know.

As for your track (in my humble opinion, of course): I don't think it matters how many re-works you've done of it, haha ... the end result I really enjoyed. As I said, I have a soft spot for these kinda works - and you have done a wonderful job of it, no matter how long it may have taken you :-) So, for that alone, thank you.

Ed,

I don't think this needs more of a melody than it already has.
The piano chording is really nice and contains enough "flavoring" notes to pass for a melody - or more "a dreamy improvisation".
The bass has plenty to say, too.

Don't think you need any "mixing advise" either. This is a very good mix.
Drums sit nicely. Bass has a great voice. and the piano sounds great!.

I'm listening for a 3rd time as I type this.
An excellent listen.
You could easily sell a whole album of this.
Would make great dinner/party/black-tie background music.

We agree -- it works and works well as is.

With a good ear one can find RT rhythms that often sound melodic and offer an alternative to some of the busier solo RT's.

Well done!

Sounded great, loved the bass. I think there's a melody in this, hope you find it. Good work.

Hi EdZ ...

I simply loved my listen! I have a ton of this type of stuff ... mostly musical beds with just enough hint of a melody to give it continuity and a continuous thread. You more than excelled with this one. I wouldn't change one single thing ... I say it's excellent as is ... a done deal. I'll be back for more listens as I can. Really nice work!

A small lounge playing this kind of music would have frequent patronage from me. Yep ... it's really well done!

Best to you ...

Alan

Hi Edm

very, very nice. I was immediately reminded of a very old (but still my favorute Charlie Byrd album (Blues For Night People). Of course, your tune is played on that 88-string-guitar, but it brought me into that lovely mood I always get into when I listen to that album.

Really, really fine stuff !!!

Cheers,

Stefan

I wouldn't consider myself a jazz fan but, I liked this.
Smooth a warm butter and just enough ear candy to keep the listener's interest.
Well mixed..........change nothing.

My first impression of the composition after listening to it once caused me to loosely describe it as a kind of 'stream-of-consciousness' jazz performance, akin to many jazz songs composed using the modal approach, which gives those works and yours a flowing, never-ending, timeless feel. Sustains a cozy, quiet, cheek-to-cheek mood, too.

I would say that the path to a melody for this song is waiting for you right there amongst the chord tones of your progressions. It was easy for me to hear a rather free-form vocal in the style of great rhythmically-gifted singers such as Jon Hendricks or King Pleasure.
