Another one (groan!), haha. Hope you like it, though :-) https://soundcloud.com/jamesdelsono/the-nightingaleTHE NIGHTINGALE He opens up and sings to them A song of friends no more, He's overwhelmed by memories And stories of before. His voice, it soars amid the tears, The notes, they choke him so; He sings as he's never done before And never will, you know. The audience cries, oh how they cry At his heartbreaking tale; He smiles as he takes his bow, His heart truly unveiled. And then, so proud at what he did He wants to share it all: And, so that others hear his pain, He goes to a record store. *** "The tape's not good enough" he's told, "For your voice on it doth shake! We cannot share this with the world, We have a name to make. How dare you show your soul on this! You know it's not polite! Come back when you sing, note by note, A song that's somewhat trite". *** He opens up and sings once more A song that means so much But not to others any more ... Not e'en to friends, as such. He sings for friendship and for those He knew ago so long ... As to the world, he's happy to Let others sing their songs. ****** Song Summary ************* Title: The Nightingale - 14 December 2020 File:The Nightingale - 14 December 2020.SGU Key=C , Tempo 60, Length (m:s)=4:16 No intro. 60 bar chorus, from bar 1 to bar 60. James,
A good write. Ah, the trails and tribulations of being a singer and songwriter...
Good tracks. Vocal is well done (good balance). Good mix.

Hi James ...
Well, Floyd beat me to everything I was going to say ... literally. He probably said it much than I would have, though.
I always enjoy your spoken word songs ... you are so good with that style. You have a uniquely, pleasant voice for the genre. Another gem from you!
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and fabulous 2021. Will be looking forward to more great songs from you next year.
Alan

Very nice James! I really liked the diminished chords in there and overall your cord progression was very interesting. The lyrics told a very emotional story about the lonely plate of the creative soul. Great work!

fj: thank you! Good to know that the mix and vocal balance are ok!
Alan: as always, you are ever so kind. I really don't deserve such kind comments, but they are immensely appreciated nonetheless! Have a wonderful Christmas and yes, let's keep writing during all of 2021 and hopefully beyond!
Tano Music: thank you. I tried to make the chord progression interesting - on listening back, there's a small corner that I'm not sure works (right when the last section starts - between it and the section just before) ... but, in the spirit of "errare humanum est", I think I'll leave it like that, haha ... anyway, thank you!
Have a lovely Christmas, everyone!!!

Fascinating chord progression to carry the nice write.
And a good BiaB band and mix.
Tano said it so eloquently ... "the lonely plate of the creative soul."
Lovely,
J&B

This certainly made me think about how we all bare our souls when we put out these personal songs for all the world to hear. There are some great lines in the song and the mood of the backing tracks fits it quite well. I enjoyed listening to your observations on being both a writer and a performer. Well done,Tom

The backing track is quite intriguing: It doesn't go as expected, but works nicely nonetheless. Smooth track.

Thank you everyone - didn't expect so many positive reactions!
tommyad: Yes, exactly - we do put ourselves out there. This one was at least partly autobiographical. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Derochette: thanks, very kind!
Ezekiel's Storm: yes, the backing track is a little unusual in a number of ways. I chose an arrangement with an organ because it reminded me of a small performance I did in a church once, in memory of a friend ... that's where this song was inspired from ... so I thought that a "church-like" arrangement may work ...
PeterF: very kind comments, thanks! I'm glad you liked it - I'm in awe of your own songs and performances, so to hear that is wonderful :-)
Merry Christmas to everyone on here ... thanks PGMusic once more!!! Stay safe and well, everyone!

James,
A very good mix on this one—you’re voice is sitting perfectly in the music bed, just the right balance. And it’s your most expressive vocal performance that I’ve heard to date—lot of emotion there and hitting all the right spots. The lyrics have a great story, one that will resonate with most songwriters. And I love that lead acoustic guitar in the break. Good stuff!
My best to you,
Deej

James, it's a good chord progression and lyric...nicely done. "errare humanum est" is part of the song's message too. I enjoyed it. I can't deny I longed to hear a soaring female vocal supporting it but I enjoyed what you offer.

User Tip: How to add drum fills without changing any other tracks
MarioD has shared some great advice when it comes to adding drum fills without changing any other tracks in your song:
There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This is especially important if one is holding a chord for a few measures and wants to add a drum fill prior to the next chord. The following is how to accomplish that:
1-get the instruments/tracks to play like you want but don't worry about the drums for now.
2-generate the song.
3-freeze all tracks
4-unfreeze the drum track
5-add your fills where you want them
6-generated the song again - note this will only generate the drum track and not the frozen tracks
7- when you get the drums like you want them freeze the track

Review - Band-in-a-Box® 2023 for Windows is Overflowing with Features!

"Band-in-a-Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is, without negative connotation, a monster of a program. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. No DAW can do some of the things BIAB does, while BIAB can do a lot that DAWs do."
