Hello biab friends.
A troubled troupador whose career is at a crossroads, reflects on his fathers advice. This prodical son is the black sheep of a well-to-do family . He is ..... The Musician.

FATHER
Study hard and attend your classes
Get a career and pay your taxes
Be a doctor or a lawyer
You don't want to be a pauper

Only mix with A list people
Play the game but keep it legal
Just remember what we're saying
Money is for the taking

Put away those awful records
Cut your hair and be respectful
Can't you find some decent friends
who do not smell of cigarettes

You were showing so much promise
Now you bring this shame upon us
Guitars are a passing thing
What good can music bring

SON
I'm playing my music in a downtown bar
the atmosphere is quite bizarre
Full of suits and their candy floss
I can't break through , I'm at a loss
It's theraputic to play my music
And I hope that I never lose it
But no one listens any more
I might as well play to the wall
And when I finish no one claps
except for one girl down the back
I smile at her and carry on
and lurch into my final song
And when I finish they do not care
I want to vent but do not dare
I remember the girl who liked my song
and that's enough to drive me on .

FATHER
You were a member of the ivy league
but now we simply can't believe
Ask ourselves where we went wrong
When you said I don't belong

Whiskey and women all night long
your inheritence will soon be gone
and one thing I can't understand
you turned your back on all we planned

Your friends are dying one by one
and soon enough your time will come
so listen closley what I say
give it up just walk away

Your mothers hair is turning grey
I worry that she's losing weight
Nothing more that we can do
Save yourself , it's up to you

SON
The songs I write don't get much traction
maybe I need to change my fashion
S#*~ happened to amazing peoples
Dumbass Decca rejected the Beatles
so I just keep on plugging away
and maybe I'll write a hit someday
but until I do I'm telling you
It's in my blood , nothing I can do
I am stuck here in my lonely world
Without a doubt its quite absurd
At 3am when I can't sleep
I walk the dog around the street
A song is playing in my head
but then it's gone , blank instead
from the hood I got my pride
but I've hit the skids I'm on the slide
my originals may not come back
I've fallen into that covers trap

Poetic lyric. Clever write. Good arrangement.
Sounds like one for a stage musical.

Very cool intro. Got a Supertramp vibe on the start. Super vocal Gary. Very well done.

Hi, Gary.

Very cool - over the top lyrics (as they should be), dramatic contrasts, a couple little "B" plots thrown in for good measure.

Nice mixing in of styles as well.

So much packed into one song! It's nice to hear something so ambitious! laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Nice to hear a musical song that has surely required lots of work and it pays off. Very interesting arrangement, mixing all those instruments together creates an excellent unique atmosphere. Funny lyrics, maybe reality for many wannabe stars, hopefully not very personal. Good way to end the song with an ice cold bear laugh

Gary,
Ambitious and theatrical;the changing voices segway well with the style shifts.
I especially enjoyed the Sgt Pepperish orchestral parts and the cutting humour in the lyrics...which rings true enough to suggest a personal connection to that father/son conflict!
Very well done.

Love that opening. Oh, you definitely speak for all of us black sheep, Gary. We all play for that "one girl down the back." The band is so cool, and so well placed. You have created a wonderful anthem.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Wow, this is an ambitious, clever, and awesome production.

I see where this is ideal for the theatrical stage.

Loved it!

A clever little mini-opera you've put together here!!! Really interesting to alternate the beat box with the orchestral theatrical feel. Really creative and wonderful little project!!! Take care. Greg

This may be the most creative mini rock opera that I have every heard. You had the complete story that most musicians can relate, i.e. trying to be a star while arguing with the parents.

You might consider putting a video with this and posting it on youtube. Really this is top shelf all the way!

yep, comes across as a song in a musical.
The music doesn't seem to come close to the surface as it carries the narrative.
The radio/EQ'd vocal is an interesting change but the delivery/phrasing remains "stagey" though less so 2nd time around.
The SON parts lack the musicality of the musician unless you were trying to portray him as that.
Ambitious work and a really good crack at it. The orchestration of the last Father part was cool though his voice didn't fluctuate with the anger and anguish.
I enjoyed this piece. I'd like to see it as part of a show.

Cheers

This truly is exceptional. Really is. Reminds me of Eminem's "Stan", but the creativity is all yours. LOVE IT. One of the most original songs I've ever heard on this forum. BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO.

Gary,
Fun and clever stuff. A candy. Awesome piece of music fusion! This is the most interesting tune I have heard by you for sure.
Thank you for sharing!

P.S. Here is something interesting. My 10 y.o. son is a big fan of Al Yankovic. In a coincidence he was listening to him today...
while I was listening to your tune in my "semi-open" back headphones. He overheard it and asked me to listen to it. He liked it and requested to send him a link. So... you got a new young fan smile
Strangely, your Musician resonated with Yankovic tunes, just heard today...It is like dejavu and total recall at the same time.

I think you are on the right path.

Misha.

Hi Misha
I know that you push the boundaries with your music and that you are blessed with a wonderful irreverent sense of humour, so I was secretly hoping that you might like this. Thankyou for listening and your comments
Being quite weird myself , I am a huge fan of WAY. Nobody does polkas like he does .
Please tell your son that I am very humbled and honoured that he liked my song and I apologise if he heard the "s##*" word. I indeed would be very happy to buy him a soda and his father a beer : )
Kind Regards
Gary.

Mr. Weder...

I know I haven't listened to anything like this on the 'User's Forum'. If someone posted a similar composition here before you posted yours, I'm sorry I missed it. Guess that leaves me with nothing to do but comment on 'The Musician'.

What an exciting and novel piece of work this is! Your arrangement is simply stunning in its blending of the popular musical genre of hip-hop with orchestral writing. It's the product of high imagination and creative passion, I'm sure. It possesses the ambience of many well-known attempts at combining classical forms with pop music, such as The Beatles' 'Good Day, Sunshine', 'Yellow Submarine' and 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Your mix is big and expansive; it sounds as though it was recorded in a concert hall. The fact it's all BIAB should be an inspiration to all of us User's Forum members. It is for me!

Please accept my enthusiastic applause and amazed appreciation of your song, 'The Musician'!
