Old Time Religion

First documented in 1873 this African-American Jubilee Gospel song is thought by many to date back even further. For this R&B/blues rock version Janice sings six parts, Peter plays guitar and sings and I thumped out an upright bass track. The intent is to juxtapose an old sound with some full on blues rock guitar which may or may not work for ya! We love the old and the newer versions so this is a mashup. We ended up with 18 tracks which is way above my mix pay grade smile Your time to listen and comment are always appreciated! Big thanks to Peter and PG Music.

Wowza!

I am very familiar with this song of course, I'm sure most people are, heard many versions over the years.

But you guys made it your own, love the arrangement!

Man, Janice is at the top of her game here, love all the vocal layers. Peter adds the perfect guitar parts, something he always seems to do, and Bud, you are sounding mighty fine on the upright!

Great job on the the mix too, Bud. 18 tracks!!

Really well done you three, very much enjoyed! Going to give it another spin ...

I love this song, and Janice nails it... but the mix needs work.
I can't hear the Bass at all, and the electric Gtar is too loud, and rawkus for the song.
Just my take on it.
I do love that "Ol' Time Religion...
edit: maybe rawkus is not the right word, (maybe not a word at all)
In my opinion, as good a player as Peter is, the guitar solos don't work at all in this... I think a fiddle, dobro, mando or almost any acoustic solo would be a better fit. Please crank up the Thump.

Edit #2:
I listened again with a different pair of monitors, and I could hear the bass fiddle better, although I would still prefer to hear more of the bass in the mix.

Hello Janice, Peter and Bud
Congratulations
All the work you put into this song can be heard from start to finish.
The extremely good singing of Janice would probably also please the singers of that time very much
The bass part is absolutely top and sounds great
The guitar solos are excellent and the distorted guitar sound emphasizes the great mood of the song.
Normally this is not my style of music
But what you have made of it is just awesome
It is a pleasure to listen to you
Many greetings to you three
Andi ;-)

Dave, coming from an outstanding blues man and an admirer of Bonomassa’s version of the tune your comments mean so much to us. And thanks for the bass mention. And yeah Peter did just what was needed to contrast the old with the new. We much appreciate it!

J&B + Peter,
Excellent take on this tune. Very lively, as it should be smile Janice and Peter are the stars of the show! Nice combination of modern vocals and vintage sounding Peter's guitar (tube preset?). Bud, super playing on that upright! A friend plays "monster" bass balalaika. It is a show by itself seeing somebody play big bass, especially something intricate. I read BH comment, but I can hear your bass just fine in my semi open headphones which are not "bassy" at all. Mix is PRO level to my ears. Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.

Misha.

Bass: could hear it just fine.
Guitar: could also hear it just fine, but didn't want to. My ears were looking for an acoustic instrument or at least a clean tone.
Janice: could hear her just fine, Hallelujah! And what a great pleasure it is to hear her.
Mix, production: Also a great pleasure.

Your liner notes said to expect a full-on blues rock vibe, and it was fine, except the guitar. A subjective matter and JMHO.

Glad you liked it…well mostly smile I respectfully disagree that the mix needs work. For the past 50 years I’ve played that old Kay Swingmaster in hundreds of gigs and mixed it in many recording sessions. I know the tone and gain that I, FWIW, want from it. We listened to the mix on a variety of sound systems before sticking the proverbial fork in it. Ironically, on two of our systems with sub-woofers we felt it was too loud.

Funny thing is that I nearly used the word raucous in my post! It was our intent to create a mashup of old-time gospel and wide open blues rock (Joe Bonamassa did a version on Live At The Greek Theater that influenced our efforts). Having played in traditional bluegrass bands for decades it would’ve been easy to mix an acoustic lead in it but that’s not what we wanted to meet our objective. We asked Peter (who also plays dobro, acoustic guitar and mando) to go all out electric on it so, hey, we’ll accept any blame smile smile

An outstanding version of an old classic.

Everything is perfect, the bass is great, Peter's lead is fantastic, Janice's vocals outstanding, and the mix is spot on.

Gee, that is like every other song you do!

Loved it.

Wow, just wow! Consistent with what has become usual with this hymn, its form lends itself perfectly to improvised lyrics, made personal by the performer. Janice gets high marks with this one. The band is spectacular.

The bass is SPOT ON...ace playing and tone Bud, - like Misha, I'm listening with open backed phones, (Sennheizer HS 515s), and there's no bass hype in these cans so the reproduced bass is pretty close to the version in the mix.
I think the fiery blues guitar parts work really well for this uptempo rendition of this song and also reinforces, with the hand claps, that it's REALLY a version.
The BIAB elements work a treat and, of course, there's Janice.
I'll simply say taht I can point to the song with a knowing nod and say "There's Janice!". Enough said.

Oh, man, there is so much good in this --and everyone of your songs, guys. So good to hear you on that big bass, Bud, and so well-played. Perfectly appropriate. Of course, I always prefer the bass a bit louder --one of my mixing downfalls. There is so much joy in Janice and this is the perfect vehicle for it. I think Peter's solos are so much better than any other instrument could do. And that's a cool deep harmony, Peter. Right from the a cappella opening to the final Amen this is outstanding, y'all.

Enjoy whatever happens!

J&B&P,

Killer version.

Vocals - awesome. (well, duh)

Bass sounds great!

Peter's guitar works. Adds a nice PB&J flavor to a classic.

Piano - nice. Claps - perfectly placed (and a great sound).

Mix - perfect (as always).

LOVE the album cover!

An obvious choice for a J&B version. Done right. Amen.

Wow, I wish I were listening this live in a church, such a uplifting live feeling in playing and singing. Excellent vocals and layering. The guitar solo may surprise like Marty McFly, but that's why it has a convincing jaw-dropping effect. The band works perfectly, hand claps are especially nice.

I like this one a lot. Fun, and vocals feel spot on.

Harmonies are great... obviously. wink Is that Janice on those low parts?

I've got mixed feelings about the guitar solo... which seems to me the intent. It should grate a bit, because it's demanding attention.

Love the claps!

Alleluia, amen! laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
