Hi everyone,

Would you like to listen to a Dutch song, called Notendop, https://soundcloud.com/user-296497130/notendop ?

I made this song in 2017, then named 'in een notendop (in a nutshell). Maybe some of you remember it.
It's about someone viewing his live and talks about it 'in a nutshell', not with the many words I need to describe my life, so it ain't me grin

Then I met Anne-Marie from RnAM and she listened to it. "Oh, I like to sing the background vocals, I'm already humming them in my head". So she made me exited and we had our first joined project!

Compared with the original song, I increased the tempo, changed some instruments and a bit of the lyrics.
Anne-Marie did the subtle backgroundvocals and also the mixing and mastering of it all. We think the vibe of the song feels right. But what about you?

Some more things to say: I'm still amazed how patience she was during this project but was also amazed how demanding I sometimes can be. Although she never complained.
Notendop had to be released on April 15, I promised her. But then I made 'Winds of War', and that became more important for me.
But tomorrow it will be Koningsdag (Kingsday) in the Netherlands, so it's a good time to release it, also on the forum. Then you can celebrate that too!

The lyrics are on SoundCloud and a English translation is underneat it.
Hope you enjoy it!

Hans

Hans, you and Anne-Marie are surely two of my favorites here, and I'm so glad she joined you for this beauty. This is such a strong song made even stronger with collaboration. That piano intro really grabs the attention and as you build from there attention becomes even more acute. As always you selected the perfect group of musicians and brought them out in the perfectly pleasing mix. Personally I'd like to hear Anne-Marie a bit louder, but defer to your expertise. I really like the sound of Dutch. The only words I try to speak with a Dutch accent are gouda and Van Gough. hehe

Enjoy whatever happens!

I didn't understand a word of it, (please ignore my ignorance) but I thoroughly enjoyed this fine arrangement.
The singing was very musical, and the instrumentation was excellent.
Outstanding collaboration... Well done.

Hans & Anne-Marie,

A nice collaboration.

Good backing tracks. Strong vocals. Excellent BGVs.

Nicely mixed, nothing out of place.

Well done.

Loved touring your country a few years ago (by bicycle).
We were there during Koningsdag...

Keep 'em coming!

This is well written and well sung Hans. A melodic and nostalgic song. Your vocal style and intonation make me think of Thé Lau from the Dutch band The Scene.

I think Anne-Marie's backing vocals added a sweet dimension for sure :-).

I guess music is the universal language. Such a pretty melody and arrangement even though I didn't understand a word. And the mix, the vocal and the harmonies all sounded great to me.

Hi Marty, Bloc-head and Mark,

I was a little disappointed that you all wrote not understanding a word of what I was singing!
I did my very best to pronounce the words as clearly as possible, but still this comment.
No, thanks for you comments on this song and I trust you all read the translation...

Hi Marty, I really doubt you can pronounce 'Gouda' or 'van Gogh' with a Dutch accent. That's one of the hardest words for Americans, Englishmen and Canadians. I think only Arabian people can pronounce that G. Even in the south of my country they can't!
But we make a bet? If you can do it, we make a song together!
And about the vocals of Anne-Marie; it was me asking her to sing softer at the beginning of the song and louder towards the end. You think I have to regret that?

Hi bloc-head, see what I wrote at the start of this post. But I am pleased with your comment on the song. Thanks!

Hi Mark, I was hoping from all people you could sing along. You are such a musical genius! singing along in Dutch is a piece of cake for you, I thought...

i enjoyed your posts a lot!
Have a nice day,
Hans

I did sing along in Dutch! Well, not really, but I did try to imagine what it would feel like, part of why I held off on reading the English translation until later.

Hans: please know that when listening to your song in the SoundCloud iPad app, there is (as far as I can tell) no way to display the lyrics, which I only know about from seeing them in a desktop browser.

That being said, I was listening in a browser when I wrote that comment, by which I meant that flipping back and forth to the translation while listening would be a very distracting way to try to take in a new piece. I can also enjoy hearing song in another language, even if I don’t understand the words; Dutch is especially musical with all its complex articulations.

Thank you for your kind words and apologies for any offense given. I should have been clearer that I intended to read the translation after listening.

Ok, it's a bet. When I went to Holland those are the two words i learned in Dutch. You might not want to stand in front of me when I say the painter's name, but the cheese is much safer. And NO! You made the right call, so no regrets.

Hi Mark, no, you weren't offensing me in whatever way. I was just making some remarks I thought were funny. Because I thought your remarks were funny too (and I still think they were...
I also noticed you can't see lyrics on the Ipad app. But I only respod on my pc, so I never thought (some) musicians stayed at that Ipad while listening to Dutch songs!

I'm sure it loses some in the translation (I put the refrain into Google Translate) but the lyrics are beautiful even then. Beautiful music and vocals, both lead and harmony. Love the modulation as well!

I rode my horse along ravines and sea
All my dreams rode with me
The wind through my hair and I gallop
This was me, in a nutshell

But I need proof, Marty! And I promise I won't stand in front of you too!
I bet your Gouda sounds like kaooda and the painter fan Coch or something close to that. But if you have proven I'm wrong, we make a song (that rhymes)

Hi Dewey, you are right on that. But the translation was so ugly, I changed it a bit.
But a very nice thing you did all this!
I made about 4 songs in Dutch, my sons hate me doing that and even my wife (still) has some problems hearing me sing in my own language, but others loved it. But beside that, translations of the lyrics always turned out looking bad. I think a good translator (not Google) knows how to do that. I think you have to translate the thrust of the story.

Hans

Hi Floyd, Brad and Rob,

I'm late again with my respones to you. Sorry, I was so busy on a song and forgot everything. Not so polite though.
Thanks for your very nice mails. I know you had a hard time with listening to this Dutch language. I think, for you it could have been German, Arabic or Ukrainian as well. But there are some differenses...

Hi Floyd, thanks for your expert opinion! I remembered you were biking in the Netherlands and you even were in Haarlem. It was a pity we haven't met. I could have treated you to bitterballen with mustard (our famous snack, to eat with a beer), while talking about music (or so). Now Koningsdag turned into a cold experience. The weather is for some years mostly bad that day, sadly enough.

Hi Brad, wasn't it compulsory to learn Dutch in your schools? I didn't know that smile
But thanks a lot for your nice comment!

Hoi Rob, Anne-Marie is some lady to be proud of; stubborn, very persistent and also very skilled and with a beautiful voice. Enjoyed working with her! I must admit I haven't heard much of The Scene and Thé. So I listened to him/them on YouTube. I think I know what you mean. But here I sang more modest, so to hear.
Thanks for your nice comment. Maybe we'll do it again, after your musical tour with Cohen songs!

And have a very nice weekend, the three of you!
Hans

Hi Birchwood,

Very sweet musical composition. Nice progression in crescendo. Everything is in its place including the choirs and the symphony orchestra. Very pleasant. I enjoyed it.

Hans gets naked in his native tongue.
FIRST - your voice, almost unprocessed, is GREAT.
2nd the lovely Bvox are a little too far back.
3rd the song is really good.
No idea of the topic but the sound of you singing your 1st language is the sound of comfortable, expressive unforced expression.

"...adventure books I loved to read. And I fantasized that I was there." - ran that through Bing and liked it.

Nice one.

Lovely song. Took me a second to make the Anne-Marie connection. Beautiful music is a universal language. Harmonies were awesome as well. Production, mix and mastering was perfect. Piano was a perfect choice to frame the vocal. Ukulele was cool add as well.
