Where's Carlos? (Santana Challenge)

I've been enjoying listening to everyone's response to the Santana Challenge and thought I would do one.

This is a song I first did in 2004, and was the first real instrumental (as opposed to a jam track) I ever wrote. I dedicated it to my wife, Kathy.

I no longer have most of the original version, got lost in a hard drive crash years ago.

What I do still have is the percussion track, which was built with ACID Loops, and also the bass track, which would have been midi. No idea what I used to render midi tracks back then.

The rest of the track I built this morning and then recorded the guitar:

~425:Organ, B3, Background Blues Sw 120
1903:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm Bolero Ev 090

Original bass and percussion track

I used EZDrummer2 for the drum track.

EDIT: I got EZDrummer3 installed last night and liked it so much I redid the drums for this song.

Ok, my friend, we now have a challenger against my mighty powers!

If that is how you want to do it, we may want to keep the challenge going!!

Very cool Dave. Love how you slide off the held note and the amp break-up catches. Excellent melody and of course well played. Well done

Man, you got that tone that goes right through ya, Dave. You definitely captured the spirit of Carlos and wrapped around every finger. I really love that Evening In Brazil album. I've listened to on Spotify several times. This version seems a bit faster or at least more powerful. It has the sultry sound of Santana all through it.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Ai, now the master entered the contest...

What a great performance this is, Dave.
I think you are the winner!
However, it was a very close call... :))

Hi Dave ..

Agree with all that has already been said. This is a splendid write and performance. Really, really sweet and captures the Santana sound so nicely.

I think you must be my biggest fan, Marty, I'm sure no one else has listened to that album in years wink I kept the same tempo as the original, but the drums are more aggressive. Plus my playing on the original was more laid back I think.

I see you uploaded your latest, I'll be along on Friday to give it a listen cool

I listened to Santana a lot back in the day, and in the 80's was in a band that covered a few of his songs.

Thanks for the kind words, Mario, very much appreciated!

Santana in his sultry mood!

As others have mentioned your tone is very nice and Santana is represented well.

Now we want to listen to your original song for Kathy!

Enjoyed it,
