BIAB gives you so much musical styles to choose from! Makes it easy not to repeat yourself. Trying out new stuff has always been an ingredient in the RnAM songs. But also in my solo projects, like this one. I had it on the shelf for a while, awaiting inspiration for a vocal: Passing Royale I would be lying if I said I wasn't inspired by songs like Hey St. Peter (Flash and the Pan) and Susan's House (Eels) ;-) Wanna do some disco dancing? If you were into that 70s/80s funk/disco sound you will like this one. Give it a go, and let me know what you think (and check out that bass!) Rob Style is _BELBOTM.STY (Bell Bottoms Synth Disco) MelodyCustom Synth is Patch 26 Magic SF2 SoundFont RealTracks in style: 1434:Bass, Electric, JazzFunkPoppy Ev16 110 RealTracks in style: 2747:Synth, Rhythm AltHipHopHorn Ev16 085 RealTracks in style: ~1435:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm JazzFunkGroovinChords Ev16 110 RealTracks in style: 2406:Synth, Rhythm JazzFunkPad Ev 110 RealTracks in song: 1038:Guitar, High-Strung Acoustic, Rhythm NorthernRockBallad Ev 065 Loop in Song: House-Techno-Trance\House - crunchy_120_b drums ev16.wav RealDrums in Song: Soul70sEv16^1-a:ClsdHHtSn, b:BusyBss Later on added 513 Bass Funk James Finger Passing Royale
Three in the morning as I'm passing the Royal, 279 Tremont. I never thought I'd cross these streets again. Wasn't my choice. If it were up to me, I'd still be... holding you.
There was a guy across the dance floor looking at me, talking about me. Just seconds after you came back from... wherever it is you went. I seem to see a lot these days don't I? Yeah, that's right, or maybe... you were right for not coming back.
Closing time and I was worried. You wanted to stay, I didn't. I guess you were...interested. I let you be, I laid no claim on you. And for that I am now truly and forever sorry.

Rob you always do a great job on whatever style you undertake. I prefer singing over any kind of talkie type thing - can't help it, that's just my taste. Especially with someone who sings as well as you do. Nice choice of instruments. The break before the last verse was a bit long for me. The narrator was only on my right - I'm supposing that was intentional. Different sound for you. Great job on the production. Sounds like you had fun doing it. Josie

I would say you found that inspiration you were looking for! Love that vocal effect you used here! You always make the realtracks fit the song you are working on! This is a great sounding tune!
Thanks, Torrey

Hmmm... I definitely wasn't into the disco thing. Harry Nilsson and Ringo Starr wrote my favorite, "How Long Can Disco On?" BUT "into disco" is definitely not a requirement to get into this one, Rob. I REALLY REALLY dig the lyrics and the way you sing them. The song has a rich rhythm and a wonderful band. It's a really cool story, too. It's like a Humphrey Bogart type walks into a disco bar to feel the pain of losing an old flame that just didn't like the way he danced.

Rob,
Nice to hear different styles being done using BIAB. Great job creating this sound. Tracks are very well mixed, well balanced. The vocal effect is cool (the vocal has more high EQ to it than I prefer).
Great to have you guys posting again!

Great experimenting! You were able to come out with a very good production of something like I've not heard from you before. Neat ideas and put together well.

It's def. a touch of Flash n the Pan - the Easybeats writing team - and more. It could also have gone towards Jimmy Nail's Ain't No Doubt. The solo has a touch of The Chances of Anything Coming From Mars as well. There's is some sibilant stuff happening as a result of the vocal effects. COOL stuff. I'm from the predisco era so can find common ground with Marty - PLUS Harry was THE BEST...there's also the classic Oz song... [video:youtube] https://youtu.be/m8el6CEMf6g?t=234[/video] JUST FOR FUN. I think you did a fabulous job Rob.

Hi Josie,
You could be right, looks like the vocal is not quite in the middle. I had some issues recording this. At one point I had the audio mix balanced exactly the way I wanted it to. But then my DAW (we use Cubase) crashed and my last four saves turned out to be corrupted...
I had to recreate a lot of stuff. Must've overlooked the exact panning of the main vocal :-(.

looks like the vocal is not quite in the middle. I thought that was intentional and it seems to suit the style.

Thanks for your comment Marty, Ha ha, yes I remember in my youth when the disco wave came up we were all thinking "what is this?" and "when is this going to go away?". But it evolved and developed into a slightly different sound during my teens. It stuck around for quite a long time, it's influences anyway, Flock of Seagulls, OMD, early Duran Duran, Prince, just to name a few. And New Order of course! In Passing Royale I pictured an atmosphere similar to the club opening scenes from the movie American Psycho

Good job. Not exactly my style of music, but you held my attention throughout. The backing track is professionally mixed, your voice is the right side of creepy, haha ... wonderful. Well done - I really enjoyed this one.

Thanks for the comment Floyd.
You are right about the screeching vocal frequencies that are currently in the recording. I did try to remove them but that caused the vocal to be muddy. I used to have a vocal preset for that made with the Z3ta cakewalk synthesizer. But sadly I couldn't find it anymore.
