If you need a little easy listening today...maybe this will suffice...I'm not really into brass sections but I do appreciate solo brass instruments...this little song features solos with the muted trumpet, trumpet and trombone from the fabulous Yamaha Genos...so if you do...thanks for listening...Dan

Dan, very nice melody. I really enjoyed it. The sounds you got out of the guitars were very good. I don't know much about the use of brass instruments, so I don't know this will be helpful ... I thought perhaps they were just a titch too loud, but I don't know it's pretty close to perfect. What did you use to get the splash at around 1:30 and the windchimes? There have been times I've thought of using something like that, but don't have a drum set and haven't found anything on Biab yet. You sure are doing well with this instrumental stuff.

Hey Brad...thanks for your comments...very kind...I'm no horn player for sure but I think the Genos has great horn voices....the cymbal roll and windchimes are also from the Genos...it is chocked full of little goodies!

Daniel,
Smooth tune. Nice work on that brass solo and other Genos parts. Yamaha traditionally had interesting winds, this is no exception. Good arrangement and mix. The only constructive opinion I have is.. I believe drums are nicer and more realistic in BIAB. I was always a fan of Yamaha synths, but I feel that drums are not their strongest side. Thank you for sharing.

Misha.

Dan, a very soothing instrumental, I liked this a lot.
The melody reminds me of something I've heard before but can't remember exactly what.
Very nice.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Man I really like this. I was doubtful since I'm not a fan of brass instruments generally.

As I go through....

The muted trumpet is rather shrill in both my monitoring systems. More so on the speakers than the buds. They have a brash reedy sound on some of the notes. A muted trumpet should be...well, muted. I think perhaps an easy EQ fix. OR, better yet.... swap the muted trumpet to a sax. Super easy with synths.

Full unmuted trumpet... introduced by a cymbal mallet crescendo build.... nice. That sounds good. No crits on the trumpet. Sweet tone from the synth on the trumpet. Nice tongue trill at 2:48.

As it builds at the 3:40 point...some vocal ahhhs strategically placed would be the coup-de-gras for this.

Absolutely gorgeous melody.

did I hear wind chimes in there? (4:09 & 4:21)

Dan,

What a lovely sounding track! Man that Genos is worth every penny in my opinion! You did an excellent job playing all those instrument sounds on it! Love the flow of this instrumental...lots of bluesy/soul feeling to it! This track could easily be put in rotation in instrumental playlists and radio stations! Super work abounds here!

Thanks, Torrey

If you hadn't stated where those brass sounds came from I would have thought you had "organic" sources. They are that good. Plus you played them perfectly.

Super song

Great mix IMHO

Loved it.

PS - a comment was made about the muted trumpet. I think you were using a straight mute. Although I did not find the sound disturbing (I was a trumpet player so I am biased) maybe a cup mute or a bucket mute may have been a better fit, assuming of course your keyboard has those mutes. They will give you a dark warmer sounding trumpet.

This demonstrates how good Yamaha keyboards actually are (and their synths as well, of course, I used to own a DX 11). But particularly how well you play them!

Some of the brass instruments are slightly sharp/hot in the mix, you might want to remaster that.

But the melodies are absolutely GORGEOUS!

First and most importantly - lovely song!

The brass on the Genos pretty convincing to my ear.

I agree that some of the trumpets could use a bit of EQ to tame some of the bite, but that's a minor nit.

Very pretty!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Dan ...

What a lovely and relaxing song! And I can always use a little Easy Listening - it's one of my very favorite genres. You certainly excelled here.

These antique ears didn't catch a lot of the EQW issues mentioned - just a bit here and there. I sure did enjoy this - thanks!

Alan

Firesong with a brass instrumental! Cool. SO very cool. It starts out like a Joni Mitchell song, and lilts away in the kind of dreamy melody that makes one close ones eyes and drift where the music takes one. You have a chilling talent, Dan. Must be chilling cuz I'm getting goosebumps with this muted trumpet. SO well composed, performed, mixed and especially written. What a beautiful build to this. It just keeps getting better.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
